Restaurants Maya loves

Meze & More

$$

לימסול, רחוב סרינה

An authentic Cypriot taverna celebrated for its generous meze spread — fresh halloumi, keftedes, local tabbouleh and calamari. Lively, unpretentious and genuinely local.

Ammos Fish Restaurant

$$$

פאפוס, נמל הדייגים

A boutique fish restaurant on the edge of Paphos old harbour. The daily menu follows the morning catch — sea bass, sea bream and wood-grilled octopus. Pair with a glass of local Commandaria.

To Steki tou Psara

$$

ניקוסיה, רחוב לדרס

One of Nicosia's best-kept secrets — a tavern-style eatery on buzzing Ledra Street serving sheftalies on open coals, fresh pita bread and local Xynisteri white wine. Unpretentious and unforgettable.

Local tips

Good to know about Cyprus

  • 🛵Rent a scooter or small car in Paphos or Larnaca, not a tourist bus. Mountain villages like Omodos and Kakopetria are only reachable independently, and that's where the real Cyprus lives.
  • 💳Withdraw cash from a local bank ATM (Bank of Cyprus or Hellenic Bank) directly — not from the Euronet machines at the airport. Hidden fees on airport kiosks can reach 7%, while local banks charge a flat ~€3 per transaction.
  • 🏖️The famous Ayia Napa beaches are packed July through August. Drive one day to Cape Greco or to northern Protaras coast — same water, a third of the crowd.
  • 🕑Local meze tavernas open for lunch only from 12:30 and don't take reservations — you show up, wait a bit, and get 15 solid courses. Don't look for an English menu; the meze is a fixed spread.

"Cyprus is not a beach-and-bar destination — it's an island with layers. Anyone willing to drive 40 minutes from the shore will find 11th-century Byzantine churches, wines from 800-year-old Maratheftiko vines, and people who still cook the way their grandmothers taught them. That's the Cyprus I chase for my travelers."

Loves

I have a special affection for the single simple café in the square of Lofou village — the owner is also the local council head, and he pours a glass of homemade zivania to every guest he deems worthy. No guidebook mentions Lofou, and that's exactly why I send people there.

Skip

The Ayia Napa strip at night. That's not Cyprus — it's a corridor of overpriced cocktails, loud music, and pushy vendors. A cocktail there runs €14-16, and the vibe is competitive, not relaxed. You can hear good live music in Limassol at Sinatra's and pay half.

Boutique pick

I design a 'Cyprus of the Interior' itinerary for couples and small families: one night at the rural boutique Casale Panayiotis in Kakopetria (wine-barrel spa, breakfast with fresh halloumi and homemade carob jam), a full day in the Krasas Valley with wine tasting at Tsiakkas Winery, and a second night in old Limassol — Agios Nikolaos quarter with Chef Andreas Loukas's tapas bar. Package price per couple: around ₪3,200 including accommodation and planning.

Client stories

What returning travelers say about Cyprus

"We booked Maya's 'Cyprus of the Interior' itinerary and it simply changed our understanding of this island. The wine-barrel spa in Kakopetria was something we didn't know we needed, and the halloumi the owner served at breakfast — straight off the grill — was worth the flight alone. Limassol surprised us: the old town quarter there feels like a smaller, more approachable Barcelona."

"I flew solo for a week in Cyprus with a bicycle. The culinary route Maya built for me included the morning market in Nicosia, a loukoumades tasting (honey-fried dough balls) on Onisiforou Clerides street in Lefkara, and a stop at an olive oil press in the Lapithos area. People asked if I was Cypriot — I must have been doing it right."

Noam Friedman, Haifa

Solo | 6 nights | Nicosia + Larnaca + Lapithos villages | October

"We were afraid Cyprus would feel like 'just another beach.' We got a perfect week: the kids loved Cape Greco beach with its transparent water and the jeep safari through the Troodos forests; we loved the meze at Platanos in Agros village — a two-hour feast for €28 per person. Maya's tip on the villa with a private pool near Protaras saved us roughly ₪900 compared to a similar hotel."

FAQ

Common questions about Cyprus

Do Israelis need a visa for Cyprus?

No. Cyprus is an EU member and Israeli passport holders can enter without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date. Entry is through official crossing points only — Larnaca and Paphos are the main entry points for Israelis.

When is the best time to fly to Cyprus?

April–May and September–October are the golden seasons: the sea is already warm (20–24°C), crowds are half the size, and hotel prices are 30–40% lower than July–August. July–August is possible but very hot inland (36–40°C) and crowded. November–March is excellent for hiking — green and blooming — but the sea is cold.

How many days do you need for Cyprus?

For a pure beach-and-Limassol trip, 5 days is enough. For a mix of coast, mountain villages, Nicosia, and wine country, 7–8 days is the right minimum. A 4-night weekend trip from Nicosia–Larnaca works but requires tough choices. For most of our Israeli travelers, one week is the winning formula.

What is the average daily budget for a couple in Cyprus?

It depends on your level: budget (3-star accommodation, meals at local tavernas, small rental car) — around ₪1,000–1,200 per couple per day. Mid-range quality (4-star boutique, good dinner, one spa day) — ₪1,700–2,200 per day. Premium (5-star resort in Limassol, chef restaurants, private wine tours) — from ₪3,000 upward. Flights from Tel Aviv (Ben Gurion) range from ₪300 to ₪900 one-way depending on season.
