Kyrenia Harbour and Old Town

Çamlıbel

From the airport
There are no direct flights from Israel to Northern Cyprus, so the usual route is Tel Aviv to Larnaca followed by an overland transfer through the Agios Dometios or Pyla checkpoint. A pre-booked transfer to Kyrenia generally costs ₪350–550 per vehicle and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes, depending on border traffic. A regular taxi to the crossing followed by another taxi on the northern side is possible but less convenient, usually totaling ₪300–500. Intercity buses reach Nicosia from Larnaca for roughly ₪30–45, but there is no convenient through service to Kyrenia, so after crossing you need a dolmuş or taxi and the journey can take 3–4 hours. Bolt works in the Republic of Cyprus as far as the border area but not in the north; travelers routing through Istanbul to Ercan should verify entry and document implications in advance, and a taxi from there to Kyrenia costs around ₪150–230 and takes 40–50 minutes.
Need a car?
For a weekend focused on the harbour, casino and resort, a car is unnecessary: walk and use taxis. Families and travelers combining Bellapais, St Hilarion Castle, Alsancak beaches and western villages will save substantial time with a car, which is close to essential. Driving is on the left, and rental cars from the Republic of Cyprus are generally not insured in the north; third-party cover may be sold at the crossing, so arranging transfers or renting on the northern side is usually wiser.
Tips
There is no dependable, widely available taxi app in the north, so ask the hotel to call a taxi and keep a driver's number for evening trips; agree on the fare beforehand in Turkish lira. Parking around the old harbour is limited and the lanes are one-way, so use lots outside the old-town ring and continue on foot. Dolmuş minibuses serve the main roads toward Karaoğlanoğlu, Lapta and Çatalköy by day, but frequencies drop at night and they are unsuitable for a late return.
