The Old City Within the Walls
The most atmospheric choice, around Ledras pedestrian street, Onasagorou Street and Famagusta Gate, with boutique hotels such as Gate Twenty Two. Leventis Museum, Hamam Omerye and the Ledra Street crossing are all within walking distance. Some lanes become very quiet at night, parking is awkward, and rooms in historic buildings are not always spacious or well insulated.
New City Centre: Eleftheria, Makariou and Stasikratous
This is the most convenient base for Israelis seeking both heritage and a modern city: Zaha Hadid's Eleftheria Square, Makariou III Avenue and the designer shops of Stasikratous sit close together. The Classic Hotel and The Sendal Boutique Hotel are established local options, and the Ledra crossing is nearby. Weekend rates can be higher, with traffic and occasional construction noise on some streets.
Engomi
A spacious, orderly western suburb near the University of Nicosia, Nicosia Mall and the archaeological site of ancient Engomi. Hilton Nicosia offers a pool, large rooms and parking, making it particularly suitable for summer family stays. The drawback is that the Old City is not walkable, so expect a roughly 15-minute drive or taxi.
Strovolos and Acropolis
A local, less touristy district around Strovolou Avenue and Acropolis Park, with supermarkets, roomy apartments and easy motorway access. Allegra GSP Sport Center is practical for drivers and visitors attending events at GSP Stadium. You get more space for less money, but there is little Ledra-style evening atmosphere and every central outing requires transport.
Aglantzia
A youthful district by the University of Cyprus, with cafés and bars along Larnakos Avenue and access to Athalassa National Forest Park. Semeli Hotel sits on its western edge and provides a more polished base than student-style apartments. Prices are attractive and the mood is local, but nightlife is dispersed and Ledra Street is normally a 10-to-15-minute ride away.
Kakopetria and the Troodos Mountains
For travelers combining Nicosia with a mountain night, Kakopetria is roughly 55 minutes from the center and offers stone lanes, a river and properties such as Casale Panayiotis in nearby Kalopanayiotis. It is an excellent base for Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis and the wine villages, with cooler summer air than the capital. It is unsuitable for Nicosia nightlife, roads are winding, and spa-hotel rates are relatively high.

From the airport
Nicosia has no active commercial airport, and most Israelis arrive through Larnaca. A taxi from Larnaca Airport to central Nicosia takes about 40-50 minutes and normally costs ₪220-300 per car; Kapnos Airport Shuttle reaches its Kyrenias Avenue terminal in roughly 40 minutes for around ₪35-45 per person, followed by a ₪25-45 taxi to the hotel. There is no train, while regular public buses require changes and are inconvenient with luggage. Bolt operates in Cyprus, but airport pickup is not always the cheapest, so families should compare a pre-booked taxi with a rental car.
Need a car?
A weekend focused on Ledra Street, the Old City and museums does not require a car: walk and supplement with taxis. Families staying in Engomi, travelers visiting outlying heritage sites, or anyone planning a Troodos day will save considerable time with one. Driving is on the left, so hesitant drivers are better served by an organized mountain tour than a one-day rental.
Tips
Bolt is the most useful ride app, while CABCY is a solid local alternative; for street taxis, request the meter or agree on the fare before departing. Within the walls, one-way streets, pedestrian zones and scarce parking make lots near Solomou Square, Ledra or Famagusta Gate the sensible choice. Ledra is a pedestrian crossing: carry your passport, check current insurance and rental terms, and never assume a car hired in the south may cross north.

Skip
The common mistake is arriving at midday in July or August and trying to cover the entire city on foot, when inland heat is much harsher than on the coast. I also skip the most tourist-oriented cafés directly on Ledra and choose the lanes around Faneromeni or Onasagorou instead.
