Overview

🇪🇸Spain

🇪🇸Spain

Spain is one of the most varied and convenient vacations for Israelis: Madrid delivers museums, football, tapas and Gran Vía shopping, while Barcelona combines the Sagrada Família and Passeig de Gràcia with an urban beach and nightlife. In summer, travelers head to Ibiza and Mallorca for parties and coves, or to the Costa del Sol for a relaxed family beach holiday. Add a Real Madrid or Barcelona match, a tour of Granada's Alhambra and shopping for Zara, Mango and Loewe, and you have a destination that works for couples, families and groups in almost every season.

Where to stay

Where to stay in Spain

Each area and who it suits best.

Barcelona: Eixample

Great for: Couples, first-time visitors, shoppers and travelers who appreciate good hotels

This is the most convenient base for Passeig de Gràcia, Casa Batlló and major fashion brands, with established hotels such as Majestic Hotel and H10 Casa Mimosa. It is elegant, orderly and well connected by metro, but rates near Passeig de Gràcia are high and streets such as Aragó and Gran Via can be noisy.

Barcelona: Gothic Quarter and El Born

Great for: Young travelers, nightlife, food and old-city atmosphere

Stone lanes around Plaça Reial, Barcelona Cathedral and Passeig del Born put you in the center of the bar scene, near hotels such as Mercer Barcelona and K+K Hotel Picasso. La Rambla and Ciutadella Park are easily reached on foot, but nights are noisy, rooms in historic buildings can be small and pickpocketing requires vigilance.

Costa Brava: Tossa de Mar

Great for: Families, couples and a relaxed seaside holiday

Platja Gran stretches beneath the walls of Vila Vella, while the compact promenade offers restaurants and ice-cream shops near hotels such as Golden Mar Menuda. It is more picturesque and relaxed than Lloret de Mar, but lies roughly 75 minutes from Barcelona, has no direct train and offers limited nightlife.

Ibiza: Playa d'en Bossa

Great for: Nightlife, groups of friends, clubs and beach clubs

The long beach strip contains Ushuaïa, Hï Ibiza and The Ibiza Twiins, making it easy to move from the beach to a party with barely a taxi ride. It suits groups traveling for DJs and beach-club tables, but July and August are extremely expensive, noisy and less comfortable for families with small children.

Mallorca: Alcúdia and Playa de Muro

Great for: Families, easy beach days and road-trip touring

The shallow water at Playa de Muro, Port d'Alcúdia promenade and hotels such as Iberostar Selection Albufera Playa make this an easy family choice. Alcúdia's old town adds a market and medieval walls, but Palma is 50–60 minutes away and a car is highly useful for exploring the Tramuntana mountains.

Marbella: Golden Mile and Puerto Banús

Great for: Luxury, couples, shopping, beaches and clubs

The Golden Mile is home to Puente Romano, Marbella Club and a seafront promenade leading toward the yachts and boutiques of Puerto Banús, including Louis Vuitton and Dior. It is ideal for dressed-up dinners, sunbeds and glamorous surroundings, but summer hotels and taxis are costly and the old town is not always walkable.

Suggested plan

A perfect Spain itinerary

Day by day, so you can picture the whole trip.

  1. 1

    Day 1

    Gaudí's Barcelona

Start at the Sagrada Família with a 9:00 a.m. timed ticket, adding tower access in advance if weather permits. Continue along Passeig de Gràcia to Casa Milà and Casa Batlló, with a kosher lunch at Shalom or a packed meal from Eixample. Spend the afternoon shopping on Passeig de Gràcia and at El Corte Inglés on Plaça Catalunya. Near sunset, head to the Bunkers del Carmel viewpoint, or choose a central hotel rooftop if you prefer to avoid the climb.

  2. 2

    Day 2

Gothic Quarter, El Born and the Sea

Enter the Gothic Quarter before 9:30 a.m., while the lanes around the cathedral, Plaça del Rei and the historic Jewish quarter remain quiet. Continue via Santa Maria del Mar and Santa Caterina Market to Ciutadella Park and the Arc de Triomf. Reserve lunch at Maccabi on La Rambla, then walk along Port Vell to Barceloneta Beach. In the evening, return to Passeig del Born for bars, while families can choose a fountain show or another Montjuïc evening activity according to the operating calendar.

  3. 3

    Day 3

    Park Güell and Montjuïc

Reach Park Güell at opening time to enjoy the terrace and mosaics before tour groups arrive, and reserve the Monumental Zone in advance. Descend into Gràcia for coffee and a walk around Plaça del Sol and Carrer de Verdi, a more local setting than La Rambla. In the afternoon, take the cable car from Montjuïc Park toward the castle and visit either the Olympic complex or Fundació Joan Miró. Finish at the MNAC palace viewpoint overlooking Plaça d'Espanya during golden hour.

  4. 4

    Day 4

    Royal Madrid

Take an early AVE train from Barcelona Sants and arrive at Madrid Puerta de Atocha in roughly 2.5 hours. Begin at the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral, walk through Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol, then shop along Gran Vía and at El Corte Inglés in Callao. For lunch, rely on a kosher option arranged through the community or bring packed food, since the selection is narrower than in Barcelona. Reach the Temple of Debod for sunset, followed by an evening in Malasaña or Chueca.

  5. 5

    Day 5

    Prado, Retiro and Salamanca

Book the Prado Museum for opening time and focus on works by Velázquez, Goya and El Greco rather than trying to see everything. Continue through Puerta de Alcalá into Retiro Park, rent a rowing boat on the lake and enter the Crystal Palace if it is open. Spend the afternoon on Calle Serrano in Salamanca, home to Loewe, Chanel and upscale Spanish boutiques. In the evening, attend a Real Madrid match at Santiago Bernabéu when scheduled, or reserve a daytime stadium tour.

  6. 6

    Day 6

    Toledo and Jewish Heritage

Take the high-speed train from Atocha to Toledo, a journey of about 30 minutes, and leave early to beat the day-tour crowds. Visit El Tránsito Synagogue and the Sephardic Museum, Santa María la Blanca and the lanes of the Judería, then continue to Toledo Cathedral. Bring a kosher meal from Madrid because the city has no dependable kosher infrastructure for spontaneous dining. Before returning, take a taxi to Mirador del Valle for the classic skyline view above the Tagus River.

Getting around

From the airport

In Barcelona, the R2 Nord train from Terminal 2 reaches Sants and Passeig de Gràcia in about 20–30 minutes for roughly ₪20; from Terminal 1, take the free terminal shuttle, while Aerobús reaches Plaça Catalunya in about 35 minutes for around ₪30. An official taxi to central Barcelona generally costs ₪120–160 and takes 25–40 minutes, while Free Now or Cabify provides app booking with demand-based pricing. From Madrid-Barajas, Metro or Cercanías trains reach the center in about 25–40 minutes for ₪10–25, the Airport Express bus costs about ₪20, and official taxis charge a fixed rate of roughly ₪130 within the M-30 ring road. On the islands and Costa del Sol, compare a prebooked shuttle, usually ₪50–140 per person, with a taxi: about ₪60–100 from Ibiza Airport to Ibiza Town and ₪250–350 from Málaga Airport to Marbella.

Need a car?

Do not rent a car for Barcelona, Madrid, Seville or Valencia: public transport is efficient, parking is expensive and historic centers restrict traffic. A car is worthwhile for families in Mallorca, Costa Brava villages or an Andalusia route connecting Málaga, Ronda, Granada and the white villages. In Ibiza it helps with remote coves, but nightlife groups should use taxis or Discobus night buses and avoid driving after a night out.

Rent a car in Spain

Tips

Spain primarily uses Free Now, Cabify and, in selected cities, Uber; Cabify and Uber are not consistently available on every island or in every resort town. Book AVE trains between Barcelona, Madrid, Córdoba and Seville early, as fares rise sharply near departure and there is screening before boarding. With a rental car, do not enter a ZBE low-emission zone without confirming vehicle authorization, and in historic centers use a marked car park outside the lanes rather than following a navigation shortcut.

Kosher & Jewish

Chabad / community

In Barcelona, Chabad operates in Eixample near popular accommodation and Passeig de Gràcia, with prayers and prebooked Shabbat meals; the Comunidad Israelita de Barcelona also runs a synagogue and community services. In Madrid, Chabad and the Jewish community operate around Chamberí, with minyanim and Shabbat meals by arrangement. In Mallorca, Ibiza and Marbella, activity can be seasonal or more limited, so never assume a minyan or meal without direct confirmation before traveling.

Kosher food

In Barcelona, established options include kosher Maccabi on La Rambla and Shalom in Eixample, but current certification and opening hours must be verified before arrival. Madrid has restaurants and catering services supervised by the Jewish community, while coastal destinations have few kosher choices and some operate seasonally only. Kosher-observant Israelis commonly prebook Chabad meals, select an apartment with a kitchen and buy labeled products at El Corte Inglés, Carrefour or Hipercor; wine, cheese and prepared foods require certification checks rather than relying only on ingredient lists.

What you need before you fly

Local tips

Good to know about Spain

  • 💳Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but always choose to be charged in euros rather than shekels to avoid costly DCC conversion, and keep a little cash for markets and small towns.
  • 🚆For travel between Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Málaga, compare Renfe, Iryo and Ouigo in advance, as an early-booked high-speed train can be cheaper and far easier than a domestic flight.
  • 🎟️Book timed admission to the Sagrada Família, Park Güell and the Alhambra at least two weeks ahead, or about a month ahead during Passover, July and August.
  • 🏨In Barcelona, couples tend to enjoy Gràcia or El Born while families prefer Eixample; in Madrid, Malasaña suits nightlife and Salamanca offers a quieter, more elegant base close to shopping.
  • 🕙Spaniards dine late, so a 7 p.m. restaurant booking may feel deserted, while the genuine atmosphere in Madrid and Barcelona usually begins around 9:30 p.m.
  • 🎰Bring a physical passport and dress neatly for Casino Barcelona, while clubs such as Madrid’s Teatro Kapital are best approached after midnight without flip-flops or beachwear.
  • 🍽️Tipping is not mandatory in Spain, but rounding up or leaving 5% to 10% for good restaurant service is appreciated, with no need for an automatic American-style gratuity.
  • ✡️For Shabbat or kosher food, contact Chabad Barcelona or Chabad Madrid in advance, as Shabbat meals require registration and the kosher restaurant selection can change.
  • 🎒On La Rambla, the Barcelona Metro and around Puerta del Sol, keep phones and wallets in a closed bag worn in front, as pickpocketing is particularly common near train doors and escalators.
  • 📱Install an eSIM before departing Tel Aviv and download offline maps, and in summer pack a hat and water bottle because Madrid, Seville and Córdoba frequently exceed 38°C.

"For me, Spain is the perfect transition from a slow morning over a cortado to an evening that only truly begins after 10 p.m. Israelis fall for it because you can watch the sunset from Barcelona’s Bunkers del Carmel, wander between tapas bars along Madrid’s Cava Baja, and sit beside Mallorca’s turquoise sea the very next day. Its joyful energy feels familiar to us, yet the architecture, rhythm and food give every day a completely different character."

Loves

The secret I always share with Israeli travelers is Cala Comte in Ibiza around 6:30 p.m., when most day visitors begin to leave and the water turns almost transparent. Bring water shoes, claim a spot on the rocks above the bay and stay for sunset, ideally in May, June or September rather than crowded August.

Skip

I avoid the restaurants with oversized photo menus on Barcelona’s La Rambla, where you pay more for a far less local experience. Walk ten minutes toward Sant Antoni or El Born and the difference is immediate.

Boutique pick

My Barcelona day begins at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and a pastry in Gràcia, followed by a prebooked 10 a.m. entry to the Sagrada Família and a walk past Gaudí’s houses on Passeig de Gràcia. In the afternoon, we have tortilla, patatas bravas and vegetarian paella in Sant Antoni, swim at Bogatell Beach, then reach Montjuïc by 7:30 p.m. for golden views over the harbor. The night ends at a cocktail bar in El Born, just as the city is coming alive.

FAQ

Common questions about Spain

Do Israelis need a visa for Spain?

Israeli passport holders do not need a visa for a tourist visit to Spain of up to 90 days within any 180-day period under Schengen rules. Before departure, check whether ETIAS has become operational and confirm that your passport meets Spain’s validity requirements.

Are there direct flights from Israel to Spain, and how long is the flight?

Direct flights operate from Tel Aviv to Madrid and Barcelona, subject to seasonal airline schedules, with a typical flight time to Spain of about 4.5 to 5 hours. Demand rises sharply in summer and during Israeli holidays, so booking early is advisable.

When is the best time to visit Spain, and when is peak season?

The most pleasant periods for a city trip in Spain are April to June and September to October, while July and August are peak season for beaches, islands and Israeli family holidays. Madrid and Andalusia can be intensely hot in summer, whereas the Costa Brava, Mallorca and Tenerife are particularly well suited to a seaside break.

How many days should I spend in Spain?

For a first trip to Spain, allow 7 to 10 days and choose a logical route, such as Madrid with Toledo or Barcelona with the Costa Brava. Combining Seville, Granada and Córdoba calls for at least 10 to 14 days rather than trying to squeeze the entire country into one week.

What is the easiest way to get around Spain?

In Spain, high-speed AVE trains are the easiest option between Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville and Málaga, while a rental car is more useful for Andalusia’s white villages, the Costa Brava and the Basque Country. Within major cities, the metro and taxis are preferable to dealing with parking, low-emission zones and narrow streets.

How much does a holiday in Spain cost?

A 6-to-7-night holiday in Spain typically costs around ₪4,500 to ₪8,500 per person, including flights from Israel, a good hotel based on double occupancy, meals and transport, but excluding major shopping. Prices in Barcelona, Mallorca and the Costa del Sol can be considerably higher in August and during Passover or Sukkot, especially for beachfront hotels.

Is Spain safe for Israeli travelers?

Spain is generally safe for tourists, but pickpocketing is common on La Rambla, in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter and metro, as well as around Madrid’s Puerta del Sol. Israeli visitors should be discreet near demonstrations, follow Israel’s official travel guidance, and keep phones and wallets in a closed bag or front pocket.

What should not be missed on a first trip to Spain?

On a first trip to Spain, do not miss the Sagrada Família and Park Güell in Barcelona, the Prado Museum and Royal Palace in Madrid, and the Alhambra in Granada. Reserve the Alhambra and Sagrada Família well in advance, and add a quality flamenco performance in Seville when touring Andalusia.

What is nightlife like in Spain, and are there casinos?

Nightlife in Spain starts late: Barcelona favorites include El Born and clubs such as Pacha Barcelona, while Madrid draws visitors to Teatro Kapital and the streets of Malasaña. Legal casinos include Casino Barcelona and Gran Madrid Torrelodones, although Spain is primarily a destination for bars, clubs and live entertainment rather than a Las Vegas-style casino holiday.

Are kosher food and Chabad available in Spain, and who is the trip best for?

Spain has Chabad centers in Madrid, Barcelona, Marbella, Mallorca and other destinations, with pre-booked Shabbat meals and kosher options in the larger cities, including Barganzo in Madrid, though certification and opening hours should always be checked in advance. Families enjoy PortAventura and the Costa Brava, while couples often prefer Seville and San Sebastián; pack comfortable shoes, an evening layer and a European adapter, and combine Madrid with Toledo or Barcelona with Girona.
