The trade-off is noise in the central sections and a highly tourist-oriented atmosphere, especially around Avenida de las Playas.
Playa Blanca
The polished southern resort town offers a long promenade, family-friendly Playa Flamingo and restaurants and shops around Marina Rubicón. Princesa Yaiza and Dreams Lanzarote Playa Dorada are strong choices for an upscale stay, while the Papagayo beaches are a short drive away. Prices are generally higher, and journeys to the island's north and César Manrique sites are longer.
Costa Teguise
A practical east-coast base centered on Las Cucharas beach and Pueblo Marinero, with surf schools, holiday apartments and hotels such as Paradisus by Meliá Salinas Lanzarote. Its position is relatively convenient for Arrecife, Jameos del Agua and the north. Winds can be strong, and nightlife is much quieter than in Puerto del Carmen.
Arrecife
The island capital suits travelers who prefer a real town to a resort: Calle León y Castillo for shopping, Charco de San Ginés for an evening out and Playa del Reducto for swimming. Arrecife Gran Hotel & Spa provides excellent views and a central location. Accommodation and bus access are relatively convenient, but evenings feel less resort-like and the island's most striking beaches require a drive.
Caleta de Famara
A small surf village beneath the Risco de Famara cliffs, with sandy streets, surf schools and superb sunsets along Playa de Famara. Accommodation mainly consists of apartments, guesthouses and surf houses, and the mood is casual rather than glamorous. The sea can be rough for small children, evening services are limited and a car is almost essential.
Yaiza and Uga
These whitewashed southwestern villages place you between Timanfaya, the La Geria wine region and the coastal road to El Golfo. Rural boutique properties such as La Casona de Yaiza offer quiet courtyards and volcanic scenery away from the resort promenades. It is a romantic, distinctive base, but there is almost no nightlife or walkable beach and a car is essential.

Day 1
Arrival and Puerto del Carmen beaches
Collect your car at the airport and settle into Puerto del Carmen, an especially convenient first-night base. Begin with a swim at Playa Grande or the smaller coves of Playa Chica, where the water is usually more sheltered and suitable for snorkeling. Toward evening, walk along Avenida de las Playas and continue to the old harbor. Choose a restaurant with vegetarian dishes or suitable fish according to your needs, bearing in mind that the town has no kosher restaurant.

Day 2
Timanfaya, El Golfo and La Geria
Leave before 08:30 for Timanfaya National Park to beat the vehicle queues at the Islote de Hilario entrance; the visit includes the Ruta de los Volcanes bus circuit, with no getting off midway. Continue to El Golfo and the green Charco de los Clicos lagoon, then stop at Los Hervideros and the Salinas de Janubio salt pans. Spend the afternoon following the La Geria wine route, visiting Bodega La Geria or El Grifo and keeping the driver's tasting minimal. Return through Yaiza, which looks especially attractive in the final light.

César Manrique's northern Lanzarote
Reach Jameos del Agua near opening time, ahead of coach groups, to experience the lava cave, pool and César Manrique design in relative calm. Continue to Cueva de los Verdes for a guided tour at a prebooked time, then drive to Mirador del Río for views over La Graciosa. Stop for lunch in Haría or bring a picnic, and continue to Casa Museo César Manrique if time allows. On the return journey, you can visit Jardín de Cactus near Guatiza, and it is worth checking combined admission for several CACT centers.

Papagayo beaches and Playa Blanca
Set out early for the Monumento Natural de Los Ajaches and follow the dirt road to Playa de Papagayo before the coves fill and winds increase. Bring water, shade, food and walking shoes, as facilities are limited and the trails between Playa Mujeres, Playa del Pozo and Papagayo are exposed. In the afternoon, move on to Playa Blanca, walk beside Playa Dorada and browse the shops at Marina Rubicón. Stay for sunset on the promenade facing Corralejo on Fuerteventura, then return to your hotel.

La Graciosa or Famara
For a full day with a small-island atmosphere, drive early to Órzola and take the ferry to Caleta de Sebo on La Graciosa; book ahead and leave the car on Lanzarote. Rent bicycles only if you are comfortable riding on sand and in wind, otherwise arrange a 4x4 taxi to Playa de las Conchas and walk near Playa Francesa. Return on an afternoon ferry and stop for sunset at Caleta de Famara. For a slower alternative, skip the ferry, take a surf lesson in Famara and drive up to the Ermita de las Nieves viewpoint.

Teguise, Manrique Foundation and departure
Start in Teguise's old town around Plaza de la Constitución, Palacio Spínola and the whitewashed lanes; if it is Sunday, arrive before 09:30 for the famous market and easier parking. Continue to the Fundación César Manrique in Tahíche, a home built into lava bubbles that perfectly summarizes the island's relationship between architecture and landscape. Before the airport, stop at Charco de San Ginés in Arrecife or do some basic shopping on Calle León y Castillo. Refuel before returning the car and allow extra time, as rental-company queues can grow around European flight departures.

From the airport
César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport lies between Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen. An official taxi costs about ₪55-75 to Puerto del Carmen and takes 10-15 minutes, ₪70-100 to Costa Teguise in 15-20 minutes, and ₪180-240 to Playa Blanca in 30-40 minutes. IntercityBus routes 22 or 23 serve Arrecife, while route 161/261 links the airport with Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca; fares are generally ₪6-14 per person and there is no train. A prebooked private transfer can make sense for a family traveling to Playa Blanca at around ₪180-280 per vehicle, while Uber and Bolt are not dependable solutions on the island.
Need a car?
Yes, most Israeli visitors should rent a car for at least three days. Roads are good, distances are short, and major sights such as Timanfaya, the Papagayo beaches, La Geria, Jameos del Agua and Mirador del Río are scattered in different directions; for a family or couple, a car is also far cheaper than multiple organized tours. Travelers staying in one resort and wanting only a beach plus a guided excursion can manage with buses and taxis, but a car is nearly essential in Famara, Yaiza and for rural touring.
Tips
Download the IntercityBus Lanzarote app for timetables, but do not expect city-level frequency after the evening or on Sundays. Free parking is fairly easy outside resort centers; access to the Papagayo beaches involves a dirt road and a small entry fee payable by cash or card, so choose a car you will not mind getting dusty. Many petrol stations are self-service, and on the LZ-67 and LZ-703 roads you should stop for photos only in designated pullouts.

Lanzarote currently has no established permanent Chabad house, tourist synagogue or reliable daily minyan, including in Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. Do not assume Shabbat meals or holiday services will be available without advance confirmation; check shortly before traveling with Chabad in the Canary Islands, whose more established activity is on Gran Canaria or Tenerife. Shabbat-observant travelers should favor an apartment within walking distance of the promenade and supermarket and bring wine, challah and sealed products from Israel.
Kosher food
The island has no permanently certified kosher restaurant, so a venue offering vegan dishes or fish is not kosher without supervision. At 08:30 I enter Timanfaya before the crowds, continue at 11:00 for volcanic Malvasía tasting at El Grifo, and stop for lunch at 13:30 overlooking La Geria’s black vineyards. In the afternoon I head down for a swim at Playa Papagayo, then walk around Marina Rubicón at 18:30 as the light softens. I finish beside the water in Playa Blanca, unhurried and with time to appreciate how many completely different landscapes fitted into one day.
