Overview
🇵🇹Portugal
🇵🇹Portugal
Portugal is where Europe meets the Atlantic and creates something found nowhere else: cobblestone streets leading to old cafes serving fresh pastéis de nata, and cliffs rising above vast blue waves. Between the colorful neighborhoods of Lisbon, the vineyards of the Douro valley, and the seagulls of the Algarve, this country quietly captures your heart. It is not just a trip — it is a return to a place you have never been.

Local tips
Good to know about Portugal
- 🚋Skip ride-hailing giants in Lisbon — Bolt averages 30% cheaper and works flawlessly. A Viva Viagem card loaded with €10 covers a full week of city transit, including trains to Sintra.
- 🍽️Restaurants displaying laminated photo menus at the entrance cater exclusively to tourists. Seek places with Portuguese-only signage — the daily prato do dia costs €8–11 and always includes soup and house wine.
- 🏖️The Algarve coast splits into two worlds: the eastern stretch around Tavira and Cacela Velha is serene and breathtaking, while the western end around Albufeira is packed and commercial. Always go east.
- 💳Multibanco ATMs are the cheapest option for Israelis — flat fee around €3.50. Avoid yellow Euronet machines, which charge poor exchange rates on top of double fees.

"Portugal teaches you to slow down — not because it's boring, but because every corner hides something you'll miss if you rush. I've been guiding Israeli groups here for nine years and every visit still reveals a street I've never walked before."
Loves
My personal secret is Mercado de Arroios in Lisbon — a working-class immigrant market with Mozambican, Indian, and Sri Lankan food stalls. No English menus, no tourists, and a full meal for two lands at €22 including a cold Cabo Verdean beer. That's the real Lisbon.
Skip
I beg my groups: do not sit in any café on Rua Augusta. A €6 latte, factory-frozen pastel de nata, and service from someone who'd rather you weren't there. One block into Alfama or Mouraria and you get the same pastry — fresh from the oven — for €1.20.
Boutique pick
My signature experience: 'Portugal from the Other Side' — eight days starting in Porto, not Lisbon. A full day in the River Douro wine caves at Vila Nova de Gaia with a port tasting at Graham's, a coastal bike ride to Matosinhos for the freshest fish you'll ever eat, then a quiet train south — a stop in Coimbra and a full night inside a 16th-century university guesthouse — arriving in Lisbon with the right context.
Client stories
What returning travelers say about Portugal
"We arrived skeptical — Portugal sounded like 'lesser Europe' to us. We left completely in love. The moment that changed everything was breakfast at Mercado da Figueira in Porto: Caro cheese, sardines in olive oil, and fresh-baked bread. Ten euros for two, morning sun through the window. Maya suggested we stay on Rua das Flores — a street that put us minutes from everything without any noise. We're going back this October."

"We flew with three kids aged 6, 9, and 12 and were nervous. Portugal surprised us with the number of parks, safe beaches, and food even the kids loved (pastel de nata became a religion). Maya arranged a one-day jeep tour through the eastern Algarve off the tourist trail — we reached an almost-empty beach at Cacela Velha. Our oldest said it was 'the most beautiful beach in the world.' I agree."

"My first solo trip, age 34. I knew I wanted wine, good food, and no rushing. Maya built me a three-day Alentejo route — Évora, Monsaraz, and a small vineyard hotel between the two. I didn't meet more than ten tourists across all three days. I drank Alentejo Tinto at €4 a bottle straight from the estate, and slept with my window open to the fields. That's exactly what I was looking for."

FAQ
Common questions about Portugal
Do Israelis need a visa for Portugal?
No. Israeli passport holders enter Portugal and all Schengen countries without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your exit date. From 2025, the ETIAS online travel authorization (not a visa) takes effect — €7, applied for online in advance. Stay updated on the rollout.
When is the best time to fly to Portugal from Israel?
May–June and September–October are the sweet spot: 22–27°C, full sun, thinner crowds, and round-trip fares from Tel Aviv of ₪1,600–₪2,400. July–August is too hot in the Alentejo and Algarve (up to 40°C) and 40% pricier. January–February is very cheap (₪900–₪1,400) but rainy in the north; Lisbon stays pleasant at 15–17°C.
How many days does Portugal need, and what's the recommended order?
Seven to ten days comfortably covers Lisbon and Sintra (3 nights), the Alentejo or Algarve (2–3 nights), and Porto (2 nights). For a short 4–5 day trip, Lisbon alone is enough — one day in Sintra, one in Setúbal. I recommend starting in Porto and ending in Lisbon: logistics are easier for the flight home and you finish with fado and the sea.
What does an average day in Portugal cost for an Israeli couple, and what's a realistic total budget?
Comfortable mid-range budget for a couple: 3-star boutique hotel €80–€130/night (₪310–₪510). Food €40–€60/day for two including wine. Public transit €5–€10/day. Attraction entries (Pena Palace, Gulbenkian Museum) €15–€25/day. Total average day: €140–€220 per couple (₪540–₪850). For an 8-day trip including flights, plan ₪14,000–₪20,000 per couple at mid-range.
