🇵🇹Portugal
🇵🇹Portugal
Portugal combines city breaks in Lisbon and Porto with Algarve beaches and nature escapes through the Douro Valley, Madeira and the Azores. Israeli travelers come for Alfama, Sintra’s palaces, riverside wineries, surfing in Ericeira and sunsets over Lagos, often on a week-long road trip.

Head to Belém for Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries along the riverfront. Return via LX Factory, then spend sunset at Ribeira das Naus or the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte viewpoint.
- 3
Day 3
Sintra's palaces
Take an early train from Rossio and prebook a timed entrance to Pena Palace. Continue to Quinta da Regaleira and its Initiation Well, then explore the historic center if time allows before returning to Lisbon.
- 4
Day 4
Porto and the Douro
Take a morning train to Porto, visit São Bento Station and Porto Cathedral, then walk downhill to Ribeira. Cross Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia, take a short Douro cruise and end at Jardim do Morro for sunset.

Day 5
A deeper look at Porto
Start at Bolhão Market, continue to Clérigos and the streets of Cedofeita, and prebook Livraria Lello only if the famous bookshop genuinely interests you. In the afternoon, head to Foz do Douro for an oceanfront walk, or replace the day with an organized tour of the Douro Valley's vineyards and viewpoints.

Getting around
From the airport
From Lisbon Airport, the metro reaches Baixa or Chiado in about 30-40 minutes for roughly ₪7, with a line change; a taxi or ride-hailing service to the center usually takes 20-30 minutes and costs about ₪45-80. From Porto Airport, metro line E reaches Trindade in around 30 minutes for approximately ₪10-15.
Need a car?
You do not need a car in Lisbon or Porto, where metro, tram and rail services are effective and parking is a headache. A rental car is worthwhile for the Algarve, Douro Valley or rural touring; Sintra and Cascais are usually easier by train.
Tips
In Lisbon, load a Navegante Occasional card and use it on the metro, buses and trams instead of paying separately each time. Start the Sintra trip early from Rossio Station, and book Lisbon-Porto express trains ahead for better fares.
Kosher & Jewish
Chabad / community
Lisbon has Chabad Portugal in the central area, offering prayers, Shabbat meals and traveler services with advance registration; the local Jewish community also operates the Shaaré Tikvah Synagogue. Porto has Chabad and an active Jewish community centered on the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue. Hours, meal locations and minyan availability vary, so contact them before traveling rather than arriving unannounced.
Kosher food
Kosher options are concentrated mainly in Lisbon and Porto and remain fairly limited, so kosher-observant Israelis commonly reserve meals through Chabad or the community and choose an apartment with a kitchen. Large supermarkets are useful for fruit, vegetables, packaged bread and products carrying a recognized kosher symbol; do not assume local fish dishes or pastries are kosher without supervision.

Local tips
Good to know about Portugal
- 💳Pay by card in euros and always decline conversion to shekels at the terminal, as DCC usually adds an unnecessary markup; keep some cash for kiosks, markets and small towns.
- 🚗When renting a car, request a Via Verde toll transponder, especially for trips to the Algarve or the north, and avoid driving into central Lisbon or Porto where parking is difficult and expensive.
- 🏨In Lisbon, choose Chiado or Príncipe Real for a convenient, pleasant base, while Alfama is best for travelers prepared for steep hills, stairs and taxis that cannot always reach the door.
- 🎟️Prebook a timed Pena Palace ticket, a Douro Valley cruise and a Benagil Cave tour in summer, as the best July and August slots can sell out days or even weeks ahead.
- 🌊Even in August the Atlantic is cold and currents can be powerful, so at beaches such as Guincho and Nazaré swim only in marked areas and follow the lifeguard flags.
- ✡️For Shabbat or kosher meals in Lisbon, contact Chabad and reserve in advance, and do not assume a vegetarian dish in a regular restaurant is kosher because sauces, cheeses and kitchen equipment are not supervised.

"To me, Portugal feels like Europe at a gentler pace: beautiful and full of character, without the effort or prices of flashier destinations. Israelis fall for the combination of Lisbon’s streets, the wild Atlantic and evenings that begin with a glass of wine at the Miradouro de Santa Catarina sunset viewpoint."
Loves
My local secret is Portinho da Arrábida, a small clear-water bay between Lisbon and Setúbal that feels almost Mediterranean despite facing the Atlantic. I arrive early, swim before the crowds and continue to the viewpoints of Arrábida Natural Park.
Skip
Do not arrive at Pena Palace in Sintra around midday without a timed ticket, or the colorful fairytale will turn into traffic, queues and crowds.
Boutique pick
I design a day that starts early in Alfama and at the Miradouro de Santa Luzia, continues with a short Tagus cruise and ends at Guincho Beach as the sun drops into the Atlantic. In the evening, we return to Lisbon for a pre-arranged kosher fish dinner and an intimate fado performance rather than a huge tourist hall.
