Suggested plan
A perfect Algarve itinerary
Day by day, so you can picture the whole trip.
- 1
Day 1
Faro and Tavira
Land in Faro, collect a car, and explore the walled Old Town, cathedral, and marina. In the afternoon, continue to Tavira, cross its old bridge, and take the ferry to Ilha de Tavira if weather and sailing schedules allow.
- 2
Day 2
Benagil and Praia da Marinha
Set out early for a boat trip to Benagil Cave, preferably booked in advance and subject to sea conditions. Then swim at Praia da Marinha and walk a scenic section of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, overlooking rock arches and clear coves.
- 3
Day 3
Lagos and Ponta da Piedade
Begin with the viewpoints and paths of Ponta da Piedade, adding a kayak trip among the rock pillars when the sea is calm. Continue to Camilo or Dona Ana beach, then dine and wander through Lagos Old Town in the evening.
- 4
Day 4
Sagres and the west coast
Drive west to Sagres Fortress and the exposed cliffs of Cabo de São Vicente, Portugal’s dramatic southwestern edge. Stop at Beliche Beach or continue north to Arrifana, a surfer favorite surrounded by cliffs.
- 5
Day 5
Albufeira or Vilamoura
Finish with an easy day at Praia da Falésia, a long beach beneath rust-colored cliffs that also suits families. In the evening, choose between Albufeira’s Old Town lanes and Vilamoura’s polished marina, beach clubs, and casino.

Getting around
From the airport
Faro Airport is the Algarve’s most convenient gateway. A taxi or ride-hailing trip to central Faro takes about 15 minutes and costs roughly ₪45-70; Albufeira takes around 40 minutes and ₪140-220, while Lagos takes about 75 minutes and ₪300-450. Pre-booked shuttles and cheaper buses also operate, but they are slower and timetable-dependent.
Need a car?
Yes, most Israeli travelers should rent a car. You can manage without one if staying in a single town, but Benagil and Marinha beaches, Ponta da Piedade, and the west coast are not well connected by public transport. Book early in summer and carefully check excess-waiver coverage.
Tips
Regional trains can connect Faro, Albufeira, Portimão, and Lagos, although stations are not always close to hotels or beaches. Within towns, use Uber or Bolt, and reach Benagil early because parking fills up and boats cannot always enter the cave when seas are rough.
Kosher & Jewish
Chabad / community
The Algarve does not have the permanent kosher infrastructure familiar from popular Israeli holiday destinations, nor a year-round Chabad house that travelers should rely on. Faro has Jewish heritage and a historic Jewish cemetery, but not a community routinely supplying kosher meals. Before Shabbat or a holiday, contact Chabad Portugal directly to check for seasonal activity and do not rely on outdated listings.
Kosher food
Certified kosher restaurants are extremely limited, so many observant travelers book an apartment with a kitchen and shop at large supermarkets such as Continente, Pingo Doce, and Lidl. Fruit, vegetables, eggs, rice, pasta, and some packaged products bearing recognized European kosher symbols are easy to find; for essentials and Shabbat supplies, it is better to arrive prepared from Israel or Lisbon. Travelers comfortable with kosher-style food can find grilled fish, salads, and vegetarian dishes, but should ask about cookware, sauces, and wine.

Local tips
Good to know about Algarve
- 🚗Rent a car at the airport and add a Via Verde toll transponder, as some Portuguese toll roads have no cash payment booths.
- 📍Couples and travelers who enjoy restaurants and evening atmosphere should stay in Lagos, Carvoeiro suits families, and Albufeira is best mainly for those seeking bars and clubs.
- 🛶Book a small-boat or kayak tour to Benagil and Ponta da Piedade for the first morning slot, when the sea is usually calmer and the caves are less crowded.
- 🌊Check the tide schedule before visiting Praia dos Três Irmãos or Praia de Albandeira, as low tide reveals passages and beautiful sections that are inaccessible at high tide.
- 🛒Kosher-observant travelers should book an apartment with a kitchen and stock up at a large supermarket in Faro or Albufeira, as dedicated kosher options in the region are very limited.
- 🧥Even in July and August, bring a light layer for the evening, especially in Lagos and Sagres, where the Atlantic wind can make it feel several degrees cooler.

"For me, the Algarve is the perfect blend of a relaxed beach holiday and a beautiful road trip, with turquoise coves, golden cliffs and towns that still move at a local pace. Israelis tend to fall for it the moment they descend the steps to Praia do Camilo and see the little boats weaving between the rock arches."
Loves
My local secret is Praia de Albandeira, a small cove east of Carvoeiro with a dramatic rock arch and clear water, especially in the morning before the day-trippers arrive. I bring a towel, fruit and drinks, because the simplicity is exactly what makes it special.
Skip
Do not try to swim into Benagil Cave on your own, even when the sea looks calm, because currents, boat traffic and falling rocks make it far too risky.
Boutique pick
I start early with a kayak trip through the caves and rock pillars of Ponta da Piedade, continue with lunch and a stroll through Lagos, and leave time to rest at the hotel. Toward evening, we drive to Praia dos Três Irmãos, walk among the rock arches at low tide and finish at sunset with Portuguese wine.
