Overview
🇵🇹Algarve
🇵🇹Portugal
Algarve is the coast you've actually been looking for: amber limestone cliffs dropping into transparent turquoise water, fishing villages that still feel like a secret, and seafood that embarrasses every "fish restaurant" you thought you loved. From Sagres to Tavira, every bend on the coastal road reveals another cove that looks almost unrealistically sculpted. This is a place where you can swim in September, sip vinho verde at noon, and feel genuinely good about life.

Local tips
Good to know about Algarve
- 🚗Don't rely on public transport in the Algarve. Rent a car straight from Faro Airport — the real coastline hides down narrow dirt tracks no bus will ever reach. Local companies like Auto Jardim are significantly cheaper than the big international chains.
- 🌊The waves on the western Costa Vicentina are powerful and unsuitable for calm swimming. If you want clear, gentle water, head to the southern-facing beaches between Carvoeiro and Tavira — they're sheltered and calm even in August.
- 🍽️Lunch is the time to eat at local restaurants. The 'prato do dia' (daily special) costs between €8–€12 and comes with soup, a main and a drink — the same dish triples in price at dinner. Look for signs written only in Portuguese; menus in German and English are an instant indicator of tourist pricing.
- 🕐Parking in Lagos, Albufeira and Almancil in July–August is a nightmare. Leave your accommodation before 8:30 AM, secure your parking spot, then come back for breakfast — not the other way around. Praia de Mós near Lagos fills up by 9:00 AM at peak summer.

"The Algarve is not 'cheap Portugal.' It's a region with its own character — its own dialect, its own cuisine, a completely different rhythm from Lisbon. Travelers who come just looking for 'another pretty beach' miss the whole point. I've been working with this landscape for eight years and I still discover new corners on every visit."
Loves
There's one restaurant I don't give out easily: Casa Chico João in the village of Alte — a hilltop village inland that most tourists never reach. The owner, João, makes cataplana (a fish stew cooked in a copper pot) from his mother's recipe. No English menu, no online presence, and you need to book a day ahead. People write to me about that meal for years afterward.
Skip
The 'Strip' in Albufeira — Avenida São João de Deus — is the place I'm always quickest to leave. Bars serving things called 'Portuguese shawarma,' waiters shouting at passersby in German, and pre-mixed sangria in pitchers. This has nothing to do with age — even younger travelers looking for a party scene find far better nightlife in Lagos.
Boutique pick
I design a full-day 'Inner Algarve' experience for couples and small groups (up to 6 people): a day in a 4x4 through the villages of the Serra do Caldeirão, a stop at the Loulé farmers' market on Tuesday, lunch in Alte, and at the end of the day — kayaking on the Ria Formosa estuary to watch the sunset over the Cacela dunes. None of this is available at any tour stand in Faro.

What returning travelers say about Algarve
"We flew to the Algarve in September to celebrate our tenth anniversary. We rented a car in Faro and spent three days in Tavira — a city we didn't know existed and now recommend to everyone. Kayaking through the Ria Formosa at sunset was an experience our kids won't understand when we tell them about it. The restaurant 'A Ver Tavira' on the hill — unforgettable."

"I traveled with three friends, all of us in our early thirties. Lagos is the perfect city for this age — good nightlife without British chaos, surfing at Ponta da Piedade, and Mediterranean-style food that feels a little like Israel but with a Portuguese twist. We rented boards at Surf Experience Lagos; the instructor spoke Hebrew (!) and said lots of Israelis come through. Highly recommend."

"A family trip with kids aged 5 and 9. The best family beach we found: Praia de Ânçã near Carvoeiro — rocks that shelter from the waves, a gelateria within walking distance, and clean facilities. The kids are already asking when we're going back. We were advised to avoid Albufeira with young children — good advice."

FAQ
Common questions about Algarve
Do Israelis need a visa for Portugal?
No. Portugal is a Schengen member, and Israelis can enter for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your departure date. No special insurance is required, but comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. From 2025, the ETIAS mechanism comes into effect — a quick online authorization that must be obtained before travel.
When is the best time to fly to the Algarve from Israel?
May and June are the sweet spot for Israelis: the sea is already pleasant (20–22°C), prices are still reasonable, and beaches aren't packed. September is also excellent — the sea is warmer than in May (24°C), and after the 20th you can find Tel Aviv flights for ₪1,800–₪2,500 return. July–August is peak European tourist season — crowded beaches, high prices, and flights can reach ₪3,800.
How many days are recommended for the Algarve?
The realistic minimum is 7 nights. Less than that feels rushed and like you've only scratched the surface. With a full week: three nights in Lagos (western beaches + historic center), two nights around Tavira (Ria Formosa, Moorish architecture), one night in Almancil for good food. If you also want a day trip to Lisbon, plan for 10 nights.
What is a realistic daily budget for a couple in the Algarve?
A mid-range budget for a couple: approximately ₪650–₪800 per day (excluding accommodation). That covers: breakfast at a local café (approx. ₪30 for two), lunch with the daily special (approx. ₪120 for two), beach entry/activity (approx. ₪80), mid-range dinner (approx. ₪250 for two), fuel and parking (approx. ₪150). Accommodation adds another ₪450–₪700 per night for a couple (guesthouse/Airbnb). A rental car runs ₪250–₪350 per day.
