Overview

🇯🇵Japan

🇯🇵Japan

Japan is a journey through electric Tokyo, Kyoto’s temples, Osaka’s food scene and the Japanese Alps, connected by superb trains and enriched by onsen culture. Israelis mainly visit for spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage, usually combining cities, nature, dining and shopping over two weeks, with outstanding Hokkaido skiing in winter.

Suggested plan

A perfect Japan itinerary

Day by day, so you can picture the whole trip.

  1. 1

    Day 1

    Classic Tokyo

Start at Sensō-ji and the stalls of Nakamise Street in Asakusa, then take a short Sumida River cruise or visit the Tokyo Skytree observation deck. In the evening, head to Shinjuku for the free Metropolitan Government Building viewpoint and a walk through the lights of Kabukicho and Golden Gai.

  2. 2

    Day 2

    Meiji, Harajuku and Shibuya

Walk through the forest surrounding Meiji Shrine, then continue to Takeshita Street and Omotesando for a sharp mix of street fashion and Japanese brands. Finish at Shibuya Crossing, the Hachikō statue and Shibuya Sky around sunset, booked in advance.

  3. 3

    Day 3

    Fuji and Kawaguchiko

Leave early for Lake Kawaguchi, ride the Mount Fuji Panoramic Ropeway and walk along the shore for mountain views. If staying overnight, choose a ryokan with a private onsen; for a day trip, check live weather cameras that morning because clouds can completely hide Fuji.

  4. 4

    Day 4

    Kyoto temples and lanes

Take the Shinkansen to Kyoto and begin among the thousands of torii gates at Fushimi Inari as early as possible. In the afternoon, explore Kiyomizu-dera, Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka and Gion, which is at its most atmospheric when the lanterns come on.

  5. 5

    Day 5

    Arashiyama and Osaka by night

Reach the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove early, visit Tenryū-ji and cross Togetsukyō Bridge before the crowds arrive. In the afternoon, travel about 30 minutes to Osaka, explore Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi, and finish with a night view from the Umeda Sky Building.

Getting around

From the airport

From Narita to Tokyo, the Keisei Skyliner reaches Ueno in about 45 minutes for roughly ₪65, while the Narita Express reaches Shinjuku in around 80-90 minutes for about ₪80. From Haneda, the Keikyu Line or monorail takes roughly 20-35 minutes and costs ₪10-18; a taxi to central Tokyo is usually ₪150-260.

Need a car?

No for the classic Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka route. Trains are faster and easier, while parking and road tolls are expensive. A car becomes worthwhile mainly in Hokkaido, the Japanese Alps or rural areas around Fuji.

Tips

Add a Suica or PASMO card to your digital wallet for quick payment on trains, buses and at convenience stores. Do not automatically buy the nationwide Japan Rail Pass: for most travelers following a Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka route, separate Shinkansen tickets or regional passes are cheaper.

Kosher & Jewish

Chabad / community

Tokyo has active Chabad centers, including Chabad Tokyo in Minato and Chabad Takanawa, offering services and pre-booked Shabbat meals. Kyoto also has a Chabad center serving travelers and generally provides reserved Shabbat meals; outside the major cities, do not assume Jewish facilities will be available.

1-chōme-5-23 Takanawa, Minato City, Tokyo 108-0074, יפןNavigate

Kosher food

Regular Japanese food is not kosher, and even apparently vegetarian dishes may contain fish stock, mirin or uncertified sauces. Kosher-observant travelers pre-order meals from Chabad and the limited kosher restaurants in Tokyo and Kyoto, supplementing them with rice, fruit, vegetables and suitably certified packaged goods. Bring snacks and travel food from Israel, and do not rely on kosher restaurants outside these hubs.

Local tips

Good to know about Japan

  • 💳Add a Suica or PASMO card to Apple Wallet when you land, but also carry ¥10,000 to ¥20,000 in cash because temples, machines and small restaurants do not always accept cards.
  • 🧳Forward your luggage between hotels with the takkyubin service for about ₪50 to ₪80 per item, and take only a small bag onto the Shinkansen instead of hauling suitcases through stairs and huge stations.
  • 📍In Tokyo, choose Shinjuku or Shibuya for nightlife and connectivity, Ginza for calm and upscale hotels, or Ueno for families and easy Narita access, since a cheap hotel on the wrong side of the city can waste an hour every day.
  • 📅Reserve teamLab Borderless, the Ghibli Museum and Super Nintendo World attractions in advance, and never leave bookings to the last minute during Golden Week, Obon or the Japanese New Year.
  • 🍱Kosher travelers should arrange meals and Shabbat in advance through Chabad in Tokyo or Kyoto and bring supplies from Israel, since even dishes that appear vegetarian may contain fish stock, mirin or sauces without English labeling.
  • ♨️If you have tattoos, check the onsen policy in advance and reserve a private kashikiri bath, because even a small tattoo can lead to refusal at a public bath.

"Japan feels like stepping into a world where everything is precise, quiet and fascinating, yet never cold or impersonal. Israelis fall for the contrast between electric Tokyo and temple-filled Kyoto, and the moment a Shinkansen train glides into the station exactly on time, you realize you have arrived somewhere truly different."

Loves

My Tokyo secret is Kichijoji: start with a boat ride on the lake in Inokashira Park, browse the design and vintage shops along Nakamichi-dori, then wander through the tiny lanes of Harmonica Yokocho. It is a relaxed, local side of Tokyo that feels far less performative than Shibuya.

Skip

I do not recommend building an entire trip around cherry blossoms on fixed dates, because the bloom shifts each year and hotel prices soar long before anyone knows exactly when it will peak.

Boutique pick

My perfect Japanese day begins in Kyoto before 7:00, when the torii-gate trail at Fushimi Inari is still almost empty, then continues through the lanes of Higashiyama to Kiyomizu-dera. In the afternoon I arrange a private tea ceremony, followed by a peaceful golden-hour walk along Gion’s Shirakawa Canal.

Client stories

What returning travelers say about Japan

"We climbed Fushimi Inari before the crowds, slept in a Hakone ryokan facing Mount Fuji and ended our Japan trip with an unforgettable neon-lit evening in Shibuya."

Noa and Ido

Japan honeymoon

"The children loved the bullet train, Nara’s deer and Super Nintendo World in Osaka, while we were amazed by how organized and family-friendly Japan felt."

The Levi Family

Family Passover vacation

"We hunted for vintage finds in Shimokitazawa, sang karaoke late into the night in Shinjuku and tried vegetarian sushi at Tsukiji, and Japan never stopped surprising us."
