Overview
🇯🇵Okinawa
🇯🇵Japan
Okinawa is Japan unlike anywhere else — a subtropical archipelago of deep turquoise waters, swaying palms, and a living Ryukyu culture that feels worlds apart from Tokyo or Kyoto. Dive over coral reefs teeming with life, sample fresh sea-grape salads beside Naha's harbor, and absorb the unhurried rhythm of island life that has made Okinawans among the longest-lived people on earth. From the stone walls of Shuri Castle to the pristine beaches of the Kerama Islands, this is a paradise Israeli travelers are only beginning to discover.

Local tips
Good to know about Okinawa
- 🚗Okinawa is not built for public transit — rent a car the moment you land. Roads are clear, parking is cheap, and the smaller islands (Miyako, Ishigaki) are simply unreachable without one. Book in advance through local companies like OTS — significantly cheaper than airport counters.
- 🤿Skip Cape Maeda on weekends — it gets overrun. Instead, head to Manza Beach in northern Yomitan on an early weekday morning for rich coral and almost no crowds. Rental gear is available right on the beach.
- 🍜Soki Soba is the real local dish — rice noodles in pork broth with slow-cooked spare ribs. Skip the airport chains and eat it at Yanbaru Soba in the island's north, a family spot that's been running for 40 years and serves a homestyle version you won't forget.
- 💴Withdraw cash at the airport on arrival — many local restaurants, farmers' markets, and Ryukyu pottery shops don't accept cards. Japan Post Bank ATMs offer the best exchange rates and are found in every town.

"People come to Okinawa for the beaches and stay for the culture. The Ryukyu Kingdom is not a smaller Japan — it's a world unto itself, with its own language, cuisine, and spirit. I've been working here for eight years and still discover new layers on every visit."
Loves
There's one place I don't share with just anyone: the second floor of Makishi Market in Naha. I went up there with a local woman named Harumi, who took a fish I'd just bought downstairs and cooked it for me in ten minutes, Champuru-style. Food, conversation, trust — that's the heart of Okinawa.
Skip
American Village in Chatan is a full tourist trap. Generic shops, inflated prices, and a theme-park atmosphere that represents nothing real about the island. Skip it entirely and spend that time in the northern Yanbaru villages instead.
Boutique pick
I design the 'Living Villages Route' — four days moving between Naha, the main island, and Ishigaki. Day one: a private tour of Shuri Castle with a certified Ryukyu guide, and an afternoon Awamori (local spirits) workshop at a 200-year-old distillery. Day two: snorkeling at Kabira Bay with a local sea guide who knows every reef. Day three: Banta village and clifftop walks followed by a Ryukyu-style dinner in a private home. Everything includes a rental car, accommodation in a Machiya (traditional Ryukyu house), and us on the phone 24/7.
Client stories
What returning travelers say about Okinawa
"We arrived without big expectations and left feeling like we'd discovered a new continent. Diving at Kabira Bay in Ishigaki completely changed my understanding of what the sea can be. Maya's tip about renting from OTS saved us hundreds of shekels. The restaurant she recommended in the north — Yanbaru Soba — was the best lunch of my life."

10 days: Naha, Yomitan, Ishigaki — May 2024
"We flew as a family with two kids aged 7 and 10. I had no idea how family-friendly Okinawa is until we arrived. Makishi Market was an interactive experience they still talk about. One important note: there are very few English signs anywhere — download Google Translate with the Japanese offline pack before you land."
Yonatan & Emily Cohen, Ra'anana
8 days: Naha and central island — August 2023
"I traveled solo for three weeks — one week in mainland Japan and two weeks in Okinawa. The island felt like a sanctuary. The Machiya that Maya booked for me in old Naha was so beautiful I spent three full days without leaving. The Awamori tasting at the distillery tour cost me ₪65 all-in. There is nowhere else I've been that compares."

FAQ
Common questions about Okinawa
Do Israelis need a visa for Japan / Okinawa?
As of 2025, Israeli citizens enjoy visa-free entry to Japan for up to 90 days. A valid Israeli passport and a return flight confirmation are all you need — no additional documents required. Arrival via Naha International Airport allows direct entry.
When is the best time to visit Okinawa?
The best windows are May-June (before the heavy humidity sets in) and October-November (after typhoon season ends). July-August is peak summer — hot, humid, and crowded with Japanese tourists. January-February is cooler (20-22°C) and excellent for cultural exploration, but less suitable for swimming.
How many days does Okinawa need, and what does the trip cost?
Minimum seven days for the main island alone, and ten days if you want to add the smaller islands (Miyako or Ishigaki). A realistic budget for two: roughly ₪800-1,200 per day including quality guesthouse, rental car, food, and activities. Flights from Tel Aviv (usually with a stopover in Dubai, Tokyo, or Bangkok) cost ₪2,800-4,500 per person one-way, depending on the season.
Is Okinawa safe for Israelis? There are US military bases — does that affect anything?
Okinawa is one of the safest destinations in the world for tourists. The US military bases (covering roughly a quarter of the island) are fenced off and not felt in daily life. There is no friction toward Israeli travelers. That said, always carry valid travel insurance — Japanese medical costs are very high for those without coverage.
