Overview
🇯🇵Osaka
🇯🇵Japan
Osaka is Japan at its most easygoing and energetic, with Dotonbori’s neon, takoyaki stalls, late-night arcades and Shinsaibashi shopping. Israeli travelers come for Universal Studios Japan, Osaka Castle and Namba nightlife, while using the city as a convenient base for Kyoto, Nara and Kobe. Cherry-blossom spring and crisp autumn are the most rewarding seasons.

Suggested plan
A perfect Osaka itinerary
Day by day, so you can picture the whole trip.
- 1
Day 1
Namba and Dotonbori's lights
Start at Kuromon Market, continue through Hozenji Yokocho and tiny Hozenji Temple, then shop along Shinsaibashi-suji and explore Amerikamura. After dark, walk beside the Dotonbori Canal, photograph the Glico sign and take a short cruise beneath the neon billboards.
- 2
Day 2
Osaka Castle, Nakanoshima and Umeda
Spend the morning in Osaka Castle Park and visit the museum and observation level inside the tower, especially rewarding during cherry blossom season. Continue to Nakanoshima's riverside paths and museums, then finish with sunset at the Umeda Sky Building and dinner around Umeda.
- 3
Day 3
Universal Studios Japan
Devote a full day to Universal Studios Japan and arrive before opening for Super Nintendo World, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the most popular rides. Book admission in advance and consider an Express Pass during holidays, weekends and the busy summer period.
- 4
Day 4
Shinsekai, Tennoji and Abeno
Begin at Shitennoji, one of Japan's oldest temples, then stroll through Tennoji Park and the Tennoji MIO complex. Continue into Shinsekai's retro streets around Tsutenkaku Tower and end with the nighttime panorama from Harukas 300 atop Abeno Harukas.
- 5
Day 5
Kaiyukan and Osaka Bay
Visit Kaiyukan, one of Japan's most impressive aquariums, and spend time around its vast central tank and whale sharks. Then ride the Tempozan Ferris wheel and, in good weather, take the Santa Maria cruise or the free ferry toward Universal City.

Getting around
From the airport
From Kansai Airport KIX to Namba, the Nankai Rapi:t takes about 35-40 minutes and costs roughly ₪35-45; Airport Express trains are slightly slower and cheaper. For Umeda, take the JR Kansai Airport Rapid in about 65-75 minutes for roughly ₪30-40, or a limousine bus in around 60-80 minutes for about ₪45-55, depending on traffic.
Need a car?
No. JR trains, the subway and walking cover almost everything visitors need, while parking and tolls are expensive and inconvenient. A car only makes sense for a rural trip beyond the major cities, not for excursions to Kyoto, Nara or Kobe.
Tips
Load an ICOCA card and tap through subway, JR and bus gates; compatible phones can also add it to a digital wallet. Do not assume a JR Pass pays off: for a standard city itinerary, individual fares or an Osaka Metro day pass are usually better.
Kosher & Jewish
Chabad / community
Chabad of Kansai operates in the Shinsaibashi area, relatively close to the main accommodation zones around Namba and Dotonbori. Travelers can usually inquire in advance about services, Shabbat meals and kosher food, but schedules and registration vary, so contact them before arrival rather than relying on a walk-in. Confirm any minyan or special requirement directly.
Kosher food
Certified kosher dining is very limited, so observant travelers often preorder meals from Chabad, buy sealed certified products and choose an apartment or hotel with a kitchenette. Those comfortable with kosher-friendly but uncertified choices can find plain rice, vegetables, fruit, eggs and vegan products, but sauces and dashi stock require checking because they may contain fish or unsuitable ingredients. Vegetarian dishes are not automatically kosher due to cookware and seasonings.

Local tips
Good to know about Osaka
- 🏨For a first visit, stay in Namba or Shinsaibashi for walkable dining and nightlife, while Umeda is better if you plan frequent day trips to Kyoto and Kobe.
- 🚇Load an ICOCA card for trains, the metro, and convenience stores, but check each route carefully because JR, Osaka Metro, and the private railways are separate systems.
- 🎢For Universal Studios Japan, book dated admission and an Express Pass in advance, especially if Super Nintendo World is the main reason for your visit.
- 🍱Kosher travelers should stock up in advance because even vegetable dishes may contain fish-based dashi, and arranged Shabbat meals should be reserved ahead with Chabad in Kobe.
- 💴Keep some cash for small stalls and ticket machines, and withdraw from 7-Bank or Japan Post ATMs, which usually work reliably with Israeli cards.
- 🕘Reach Osaka Castle at opening time and Dotonbori only after dark, giving you shorter morning queues and the full neon effect at night.

"Osaka is Japan with the volume turned up: direct, funny, food-obsessed, and far less formal than Tokyo. Israelis fall for it the moment they stand beneath Dotonbori’s neon signs and discover that tiny, genuinely local alleys hide just behind the city’s most photographed street."
Loves
My favorite corner is Nakazakicho, a pocket of old wooden houses, vintage shops, and tiny cafés within walking distance of Umeda. I arrive in the afternoon, wander without a route, and finish with the night view from the Umeda Sky Building.
Skip
Do not build your visit around Kuromon Market, which has become expensive and heavily touristic, and only go early if you genuinely want to see the stalls before the crowds.
Boutique pick
I start at Osaka Castle’s gates when they open, continue through the quiet streets of Nakazakicho, and head toward Shinsaibashi and Amerikamura in the late afternoon. At night, I lead you through Hozenji Yokocho to Dotonbori, followed by a short canal cruise as the neon reflects on the water.
