Overview
🇯🇵Kyoto
🇯🇵Japan
Kyoto is the soul of Japan — a city where golden temples and paper lanterns have set the rhythm of life for a thousand years. From the cherry-lined paths of Maruyama Park to the stone-paved lanes of Gion, every corner feels like a painting that was waiting for you. This is not a city you sightsee — it is a city you inhabit slowly, a bowl of matcha in hand, as a geisha glides past.

Local tips
Good to know about Kyoto
- 🚌Skip the all-day bus pass if your route is mainly Fushimi Inari, Gion, and Arashiyama — three separate rides will cost less, and parts of the route are easily walkable.
- ⛩️Visit Fushimi Inari at midnight, not dawn. Most tips say 'go at sunrise', but at midnight the path is nearly deserted, the stone lanterns glow, and the atmosphere is far more powerful. The shrine is open 24/7.
- 🍱For a cheap and authentic lunch, look for 'teishoku' (定食) signs near Nishiki Market or around Doshisha University — a main dish, miso soup, rice, and a side for 900–1,200 ¥ (roughly ₪25–35).
- 🗓️Avoid Japan's Golden Week (April 29 – May 5) — hotels sell out months ahead and prices triple. Mid-November, on the other hand, offers the most stunning autumn foliage with noticeably lighter crowds than late October.

"Kyoto is the only city that makes you feel like you're intruding — and that's precisely why I fall for it again every visit. It doesn't try to please anyone. It simply exists, on its own terms."
Loves
My quiet obsession is a street almost no Israeli traveler finds: Nishiki Koji, the narrow food alley that runs parallel to the famous Nishiki Market but caters mainly to locals. That's where I buy my tofu every morning — Morika shop, three doors before the northern corner. Warm tofu served with a pinch of salt and sesame oil is worth the entire trip.
Skip
I never eat at any matcha spot on Ninenzaka street. They're all tourist-facing, prices are inflated fourfold, and the matcha is usually cheap powder dyed extra green. For real matcha, take the train to Uji — 17 minutes — and walk into Tsuen, Japan's oldest tea house.
Boutique pick
The package I build for my clients is called 'Kyoto Unmasked': two and a half days that start with an early-morning market tour of Nishiki with a local chef, followed by a private visit to the hidden garden of Daitoku-ji temple (not in any guidebook), one night at a 6-room boutique ryokan in the Fushimi neighborhood with a personal kaiseki dinner, and a full third day in Uji — tea, ancient bridges, zero tourists. All in at roughly ₪4,500–5,500 per person (excluding flights), and it produces a memory that lasts a lifetime.
Client stories
What returning travelers say about Kyoto
"We arrived at Fushimi Inari at 11:30pm after Maya recommended it. No words. The lanterns, the silence, the smell of incense drifting from somewhere invisible — we walked the trail for half an hour and didn't see a single other person. That's exactly why I recommend VAYULOR to everyone I know."

Kyoto + Osaka, 8 nights, November 2023
"The ryokan Maya included in our package in Fushimi was exactly the 6-room place she described. We had an 11-course kaiseki dinner served on a low table facing a rock garden — the chef sat with us at the end of the meal and explained each ingredient. The rest of the trip was excellent, but that night is what stayed with us."

Kyoto, Nara & Uji, 6 nights, April 2024
"I traveled solo to Kyoto for 10 days — I was worried it would feel lonely, and I came back feeling like I'd found the quietest and safest place on earth. Maya gave me a list of cafés where local musicians gather on Thursday evenings. I ended up at one in the Shimogamo neighborhood and spent three hours with three Japanese men who spoke a little English playing shogi. No guidebook would have led me there."

FAQ
Common questions about Kyoto
Do Israelis need a visa for Japan?
No. Israelis enjoy visa-free entry to Japan for up to 90 days. You need an Israeli passport valid for at least 6 months from entry, a return ticket, and generally proof of sufficient funds. Since 2023, Japan lifted the mandatory Visit Japan Web pre-registration — standard border control applies.
What is the best time to visit Kyoto?
Two clear peaks: cherry blossom (sakura) from late March to early April, and red autumn foliage (koyo) from mid to late November. For Israelis flying from Tel Aviv, November is the smarter choice — the colors are equally stunning and you avoid the tsunami of Asian tourists that arrives during sakura season. July–August is a bad idea: 90% humidity, 36°C heat, and the Gion Matsuri festival leaves the city overwhelmed.
How many days does Kyoto need, and how do you combine it with Osaka?
Kyoto alone requires a minimum of 3 nights to seriously cover the old city, Arashiyama, and Fushimi. 4–5 nights if you add Uji and Nara. The classic combo is a Kyoto base with a full day in Osaka (25 minutes by Shinkansen, roughly ₪60–70 per ride) — Osaka doesn't require an overnight unless you add it as a standalone leg at the end. In total, a quality Kyoto + Osaka + Nara trip = 7–9 nights.
What is a realistic budget for an Israeli couple visiting Kyoto?
Flights from Tel Aviv to Japan (usually via Helsinki, Rome, or Dubai) run ₪2,800–4,500 per person in shoulder season. Accommodation: quality hostel ₪150–250 per person per night; decent city hotel ₪400–650; ryokan with meals ₪1,100–1,800. Food: ₪200–350 per person per day eating teishoku, ramen, and market stalls. Combined, a realistic one-week budget for a couple (excluding flights) is ₪6,000–9,000 per person.
