Overview

🇱🇹Palanga

🇱🇹Lithuania

Palanga is Lithuania's summer capital, a green Baltic resort with a broad sandy beach, dunes and late sunsets suited to relaxed family holidays and romantic weekends. Walk along Palanga Pier, join the cafés and bars on J. Basanavičiaus Street, then visit Birutė Park and the Amber Museum inside Tiškevičiai Palace. Israelis come mainly in July and August for the mild weather, lively resort atmosphere and convenient access through Palanga Airport, although the Baltic Sea remains cool even at summer's peak. This is a compact escape built around beaches, cycling, spas and pine forest rather than big-city shopping or all-night nightlife.

Where to stay

Where to stay in Palanga

Each area and who it suits best.

Central Palanga and J. Basanavičiaus Street

Great for: Young travelers, nightlife and first-time visitors without a car

This is Palanga's tourist heart: pedestrian J. Basanavičiaus Street is lined with restaurants, bars and arcades and runs directly to Palangos tiltas pier and the beach. Hotels such as Palanga Life Balance SPA and Gabija are within walking distance of both the action and the Botanical Park. In July and August the street stays noisy late, parking is difficult and prices are among the city's highest.

Kunigiškiai

Great for: Families, apartment stays and groups with a car

This northern resort district mixes wooden cottages, modern apartments and paths through pine forest to Kunigiškiai Beach. Holiday complexes cluster around Vaivorykštės and Kontininkų streets, with Atostogų Parkas a short drive away. You get more space and a kitchen for less than in the center, but the pier is roughly 10 to 15 minutes away by car and nightlife is minimal.

Vanagupė

Great for: Couples, spa breaks and quiet luxury

This polished district north of the center lies between pine forest and a broad beach, centered on Vanagupės Street and Vanagupė Spa Resort. It suits spa days, cycling and quiet hotel dining away from the Basanavičiaus crowds. The trade-off is a walk of around 30 minutes to the center or reliance on taxis, plus higher summer-weekend rates.

Botanical Park and Birutė district

Great for: Couples, nature lovers and travelers seeking quiet

Southern Palanga is its green, romantic quarter, beside Palangos Birutės parkas, Birutė Hill and the Amber Museum in Tiškevičiai Palace. Birutės Avenue and S. Dariaus ir S. Girėno Street are quiet and wooded, with hotels such as Gabija and Palanga Life Balance SPA on the northern edge. Both beach and center are walkable, but late-night dining is limited and quality accommodation is not cheap.

Šventoji

Great for: Budget-conscious families, beach holidays and a local pace

This seaside town within Palanga municipality sits about 12 km north, with a sandy beach, the Šventoji River and the suspended Monkey Bridge. Guesthouses, apartments and holiday lodgings around Jūros and Kopų streets are generally cheaper than central Palanga. It is spacious and family-friendly, but reaching the pier, Amber Museum and nightlife requires a bus or car.

Nemirseta

Great for: Deep quiet, nature, cycling and camping

South of Palanga, Nemirseta is an almost wild strip of dunes, coastal meadow and woodland along the cycle route toward Klaipėda. Its landmarks are Nemirseta Beach and the historic rescue station, while accommodation consists mainly of holiday homes and small campsites. It is excellent for escaping crowds, but there is no meaningful commercial center and attractions require a bicycle or car.

Peak season for Israelis (when everyone goes): יונ · יול · אוג. July and August are the true peak, when Israeli families travel during the school holiday and the beach, pier and Basanavičiaus promenade are at their liveliest. June is calmer and often cheaper, but both the weather and sea are cooler.

Suggested plan

A perfect Palanga itinerary

Day by day, so you can picture the whole trip.

  1. 1

    Day 1

Meet Palanga and watch sunset from the pier

After check-in, walk along Vytauto Street and continue to pedestrian J. Basanavičiaus, the resort's liveliest axis. Reach the beach in the afternoon, swim in the Baltic if conditions allow, then walk out on Palangos tiltas, the long pier with Palanga's signature sunset view. For dinner, choose a central restaurant offering vegetarian food or simple fish if you do not keep kosher; kosher-observant travelers should return to their kitchenette. Finish at a café or bar on the pedestrian street, which remains noisy late on summer weekends.

  2. 2

    Day 2

Amber Museum, Birutė Park and the beach

Begin around 10:00, when Palangos gintaro muziejus usually opens inside the impressive Tiškevičiai Palace; verify seasonal hours and allow about 90 minutes for the amber collections. Continue through Palangos Birutės parkas, climb Birutė Hill, and visit the rose garden before reaching the quieter southern beach. Bring a supermarket picnic or stop at a café near Vytauto Street, then spend a few hours on the sand. Return toward the park in the evening, when the summer concert hall or rotunda area sometimes hosts performances.

  3. 3

    Day 3

Cycling through pines to Kunigiškiai and Šventoji

Rent bicycles in the morning and follow the coastal path north through Vanagupė and Kunigiškiai, a flat route through pines and dunes. Stop at Kunigiškiai Beach before 11:00 while it is still calm, then continue to Šventoji for a riverside walk and a crossing of Monkey Bridge. Buy picnic supplies at a local supermarket or use a café near Jūros Street according to your kosher requirements. Cycle back to Palanga in the afternoon, or take bicycles on a suitable bus only after confirming that the route and driver permit them.

  4. 4

    Day 4

    Klaipėda and the Curonian Lagoon

Leave by 08:00 for Klaipėda to see its Old Town around Theatre Square and the cobbled lanes before the day groups arrive. Cross from Smiltynės perkėla to Smiltynė, then continue by car or bus to Nida, Parnidis Dune and viewpoints over both the lagoon and Baltic Sea. For a shorter day, skip Nida and visit the Lithuanian Sea Museum and Dolphinarium near Smiltynė, an especially good family option. Carry food in advance, particularly if keeping kosher, and return to Palanga in the evening; in summer, reserve attractions and check ferry schedules ahead.

  5. 5

    Day 5

Spa day, rainy weather or family action

If Baltic weather turns rainy, pre-book half a day at Atostogų Parkas near Žibininkai, with pools and sauna facilities, or choose a treatment at Vanagupė Spa Resort. Families may prefer Palangos vasaros parkas near J. Basanavičiaus, whose indoor and outdoor activities vary by season. On a sunny day, swap the morning for Vanagupė Beach, which is less crowded than the sand by the pier, then return to the center for small Lithuanian amber purchases. Watch sunset again from Birutė Hill or the beach south of the pier, where the atmosphere is calmer.

  6. 6

    Day 6

    Nemirseta and a relaxed farewell

Before your flight, cycle or drive south to Nemirseta, a natural stretch of coastal meadow, dunes and a historic rescue station far from the busy pedestrian zone. Arrive in the morning while the paths are quiet and the light is good for photographs, allowing two hours to walk around Nemirsetos paplūdimys. Return to central Palanga for coffee and final shopping on Vytauto Street, but avoid uncertified amber stalls if authenticity matters. Allow at least two hours before departure for the drive, rental-car return and airport formalities, even though the terminal is small.

Getting around

From the airport

The nearest airport is Palanga International Airport (PLQ), about 7 km from the center: a pre-booked taxi or Bolt takes 10 to 15 minutes and generally costs ₪35-60, while Šventoji is around 10 minutes and ₪30-50 away. A local city bus runs from the terminal area to central Palanga and the bus station in roughly 20 minutes for about ₪4-7, although evening frequency is limited. A private hotel transfer costs around ₪80-150 per vehicle and should be booked ahead for a late arrival. From Riga, Kaunas or Vilnius airports, onward travel takes around 3.5 to 5 hours by bus or car; from Klaipėda it is approximately 30 to 40 minutes by bus or 25 minutes by taxi.

Need a car?

A car is unnecessary for a central Palanga weekend: the pier, beach, Birutė Park and Amber Museum are walkable, and cycling infrastructure is excellent. It is very useful for families staying in Kunigiškiai or Šventoji, or for anyone planning Klaipėda, the Curonian Lagoon and the Hill of Witches. Couples can manage with bicycles and Bolt, while a group of four may find a rental car cheaper than several transfers.

Rent a car in Palanga

Tips

Bolt is the most convenient ride-hailing app, but driver supply drops late at night and on busy weekends, so do not leave booking until the last minute. Summer parking near J. Basanavičiaus, Birutės Avenue and the beach is regulated and partly paid; leave the car at the hotel and walk or cycle when possible. For the Curonian Lagoon route, drive to Klaipėda and use the Smiltynė ferry with or without the car, departing early in peak summer to avoid queues.

Kosher & Jewish

Chabad / community

Palanga itself has no permanent Chabad house, active synagogue or dependable daily minyan for visitors. The nearest established Jewish address is the Klaipėda Jewish Community at Žiedų g. 3, around 30 km south; services, community events and holiday meals follow its own schedule rather than operating as a daily tourist service. Contact the community well before Shabbat or a holiday and do not assume a minyan, meal or kosher-food sale will be available.

Kosher food

Palanga has no certified kosher restaurant, and restaurants serving vegan dishes or fish are still not kosher because of their kitchens and utensils. Kosher-observant Israelis typically book an apartment with a kitchenette and shop at Maxima, Rimi or Lidl for sealed products carrying a recognized certification; selection is small and variable, so they bring wine, packaged bread, ready meals and hard-to-find staples from Israel. For Shabbat, staying centrally makes the beach and park accessible on foot, while any community needs should be arranged in advance with Klaipėda.

Local tips

Good to know about Palanga

  • 💳Almost everything in Palanga can be paid by card or phone, but always select euros rather than shekels on the terminal to avoid costly DCC conversion, and keep €20–30 in cash for small stalls.
  • ✈️There is usually no regular nonstop flight from Tel Aviv to Palanga, so the practical routes are a connection through Riga to PLQ or a flight to Vilnius followed by a bus journey of roughly four hours.
  • 🚕From Palanga Airport, order a Bolt through the app rather than taking an unmetered car outside, and request it a few minutes early on summer evenings because driver availability is limited.
  • 🏨For couples seeking quiet, I recommend staying around Birutė Park and S. Dariaus ir S. Girėno Street, while families wanting restaurants and attractions close by should choose the center but avoid rooms facing Jonas Basanavičius Street.
  • 🎟️In July and August, reserve accommodation, bicycles and an opening-hour slot at the Amber Museum in advance, especially on weekends when visitors also arrive from Vilnius and Klaipėda.
  • 🌅Palanga Pier fills up about half an hour before sunset, so arrive 45 minutes early or watch from the beach just north of it for the same view without the crush.
  • 🍸EXIT Palanga only gets going after midnight on weekends, so arrive neatly dressed with a passport or a clear copy, while Vandenis is better suited to an earlier evening of live music.
  • ✡️Palanga has no permanent kosher restaurant, so kosher-observant travelers should stock up on sealed products in Vilnius, coordinate ahead with Chabad Lithuania and book an apartment with a kitchenette rather than relying on local restaurants.
  • 🌬️Even on a 25°C day, the Baltic wind can make evenings chilly, so bring a light windproof layer and a packable rain jacket for the beach and pier.
  • 📱A European eSIM is the simplest option, and travelers buying a local Pildyk or Telia SIM should bring a passport for Lithuania's required registration.

"To me, Palanga feels like a Baltic summer holiday that catches everyone by surprise: pine forest, pale sand, late sunsets and a far more relaxed atmosphere than most people expect from Lithuania. Israelis fall for that walk down Jonas Basanavičius Street to Palanga Pier, where the sun can slip into the Baltic Sea close to 10 p.m. I love balancing the lively promenade with the quiet paths of Birutė Park and the view from Birutė Hill, where Palanga reveals its elegant, peaceful side."

Loves

My local secret is Nemirseta Beach, south of the center, where broad dunes meet pine forest and the atmosphere is much quieter than around the pier. I go after 6 p.m. with a warm layer, stay for sunset and head back before the forest path becomes uncomfortably dark.

Skip

The common mistake is booking a hotel directly on Jonas Basanavičius Street and expecting peace and quiet; in July and August it stays busy with music, stalls and families until late. The first row of restaurants by the pier also tends to be pricier and more crowded without offering a real culinary advantage.

Boutique pick

I begin at 9 a.m. with coffee and breakfast near Market Square, cycle through Birutė Park at 10:30 to the Amber Museum in Tiškevičiai Palace, and stop at 1:30 p.m. for a vegetarian version of the cold beet soup Šaltibarščiai. The afternoon belongs to Nemirseta Beach, followed by a walk along Jonas Basanavičius Street to the pier for sunset at about 8:30 p.m. I end the night with live music at Vandenis or, for dancing, at EXIT Palanga after midnight.

FAQ

Common questions about Palanga

Do Israelis need a visa for Palanga?

Israeli citizens do not need a visa for a tourist stay in Palanga of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, as Lithuania is part of the Schengen Area. Travel with a valid passport and check whether ETIAS authorization is required before departure.

Are there direct flights from Tel Aviv to Palanga, and how long does the journey take?

There is usually no regular nonstop service from Tel Aviv to Palanga Airport, so the most practical route is a connection through Riga or Warsaw, typically taking 6 to 9 hours in total. Another good option is flying to Vilnius or Kaunas and driving to Palanga in around 3 to 3.5 hours.

When is the best time to visit Palanga, and when is peak season?

The best season in Palanga runs from late June to early September, with July and August bringing the busiest beaches, concerts and crowds along Basanavičiaus Street. Baltic summer weather changes quickly, so pack swimwear together with a light rain jacket, a warm layer and comfortable shoes.

How many days are enough for Palanga, and what should it be combined with?

Two to three nights are enough for Palanga itself, while four nights suit travelers seeking a relaxed seaside break. Combine Palanga with Klaipėda and the Curonian Spit, including the dunes at Nida, or add several days in Vilnius.

How do you get around Palanga, and is a car necessary?

Central Palanga is compact, and most visitors walk or rent bicycles to move between Basanavičiaus Street, the botanical park and the beach. A car is mainly useful for hotels around Vanagupė or day trips to Klaipėda, Nida and Žemaitija National Park.

How much does a holiday in Palanga cost?

An Israeli couple can expect to spend about ₪500 to ₪950 per day in Palanga during summer on a central hotel, meals, drinks and activities, excluding flights and a rental car. A three-night trip for two generally costs around ₪3,200 to ₪5,800 including connecting flights, with higher prices on July and August weekends.

Is Palanga safe for Israeli travelers?

Palanga is considered a safe and comfortable destination, including around the promenade and Basanavičiaus Street at night, though phones and wallets require attention during the crowded peak season. The Baltic Sea can have strong currents and waves, so swim only at supervised Palanga beaches and follow lifeguard flags.

What should not be missed in Palanga, and is it better for families or couples?

Do not miss the Amber Museum inside Tiškevičiai Palace, a walk through Birutė Park and sunset from Palanga Pier; families also enjoy WakePond, while couples tend to prefer coastal cycling and quieter Vanagupė. Palanga works for both, although July feels especially family-oriented and June or September is calmer and more romantic.

What is nightlife like in Palanga, and are there casinos?

Palanga nightlife is concentrated in summer around Basanavičiaus Street and Kablys + Jūra, with bars, live shows and DJs, but it becomes very quiet outside the season. Palanga has no major casino worth planning an evening around and should not be treated as a gambling destination.

Is kosher food or a Chabad house available in Palanga?

Palanga has no active Chabad house or permanent kosher restaurant; the nearest established Chabad and organized kosher services are in Vilnius, more than three hours away. Kosher-observant visitors should book an apartment with a kitchen, bring key products from Israel and supplement with fruit, vegetables and sealed goods from Maxima or Rimi after checking certification.
