Getting around
From the airport
Santorini Airport is about 10 minutes from Fira. A taxi to Fira generally costs ₪70-110 and takes 10-15 minutes; to Oia, expect roughly ₪140-220 and 25-35 minutes. The public bus to Fira is much cheaper at around ₪8-12, with connections from there to the rest of the island.
Need a car?
A car is not essential if you stay in Fira and mainly plan to visit Oia, Kamari, and Perissa, as buses leave from the town's central station. Renting one for two days is worthwhile for Akrotiri, Red Beach, Pyrgos, Akrotiri Lighthouse, and the wineries, especially for families.
Tips
In summer, reserve an automatic car and airport transfer in advance because supply and taxis are limited. Do not drive into the narrow lanes of Oia or Fira: park at the edge and continue on foot, allowing plenty of extra time around sunset.

- 🏨For couples seeking views and quiet, I recommend Imerovigli; choose Fira for nightlife and restaurants, or Kamari for a more affordable and convenient seaside stay.
- 🚌Almost every bus route runs through Fira, so traveling between Oia and Kamari may require a transfer and take far longer than the map suggests.
- 🛵Do not rent an ATV without experience or ride one in flip-flops, as the roads are narrow, partly unlit and tourist accidents on the island are not uncommon.
- 📅For July and August, book a caldera-view hotel, sunset cruise and popular Oia or Imerovigli restaurant at least two months ahead.

I do not recommend arriving at Oia Castle right at sunset, because the crowding is intense and the same light is far better enjoyed from a boat or an Imerovigli terrace.
