Overview

🇬🇷Rhodes

🇬🇷Greece

Rhodes feels tailor-made for an Israeli summer escape: a short flight, clear coves, all-inclusive resorts and lively evenings in Rhodes Town. Swim at Anthony Quinn Bay or Tsambika, wander through the medieval Old Town, then head to a waterfront bar, the casino or a Greek dinner. Whitewashed Lindos and its hilltop Acropolis make the island's essential day trip.

Where to stay

Where to stay in Rhodes

Each area and who it suits best.

Rhodes Town and the Old Town

Great for: Couples, younger travelers, and anyone who wants restaurants, shopping, and nightlife

The island's most urban and convenient base, with medieval lanes, Mandraki Harbour, bars, restaurants, and easy access to Elli Beach.

Faliraki

Great for: Families, younger crowds, and travelers seeking beaches and nightlife

A lively resort strip with a long sandy beach, all-inclusive hotels, a water park, and a bar street that wakes up after sunset.

Lindos

Great for: Couples, honeymooners, and travelers seeking a romantic atmosphere

A photogenic whitewashed village beneath the Acropolis, with car-free lanes, rooftop terraces, and clear coves such as St Paul's Bay.

Ixia and Ialyssos

Great for: Families, windsurfers, and travelers wanting a resort near the city and airport

An accessible west-coast base with large resorts, sunsets, and steady winds, though the sea is rougher and most beaches are pebbly.

Kolymbia

Great for: Families, couples, and travelers who prefer a quieter holiday

A relaxed east-coast resort with pleasant bays, family-friendly hotels, and a useful position between Rhodes Town and Lindos.

Suggested plan

A perfect Rhodes itinerary

Day by day, so you can picture the whole trip.

  1. 1

    Day 1

Rhodes Town and the Old Town

Begin at the Palace of the Grand Master, continue down the Street of the Knights, and wander through the lanes to Hippocrates Square. Visit Kahal Shalom and the Jewish Quarter, walk out toward Mandraki Harbour, and finish with sunset and dinner in the New Town.

  2. 2

    Day 2

    Lindos and St Paul's Bay

Leave early for Lindos before the heat and crowds, climb to the Acropolis, and take in the view over the whitewashed village and bays. Spend the afternoon swimming at Lindos Beach or St Paul's Bay, then relax with a drink on one of the village's rooftop terraces.

  3. 3

    Day 3

    East Coast Bays

Start with an early swim at Anthony Quinn Bay or Ladiko Beach, while the water is calm and parking is still available. Continue to broad Tsambika Beach, then stop at Kallithea Springs on the return journey for its restored Italian architecture and sheltered bay.

  4. 4

    Day 4

    Nature and Inland Villages

In summer, visit the Valley of the Butterflies in the morning and keep quiet to avoid disturbing the local moths. Continue to Embonas on the slopes of Mount Attavyros, browse honey and olive-oil shops around the village square, and return through the island's mountainous interior.

  5. 5

    Day 5

    Sea or Family Day

Choose a day cruise from Rhodes Town to nearby bays, or spend a full family day at Faliraki WaterPark. For a slower finish, relax at Elli Beach, shop along Sokratous and Jean de La Fontaine streets, and take one final evening walk around the harbour.

Getting around

From the airport

Diagoras Airport is about 14 km from Rhodes Town. A taxi takes roughly 20-30 minutes and usually costs ₪110-150; a bus to the central station by Nea Agora takes around 35-45 minutes and costs about ₪10-15 per person. Ixia and Ialyssos are closer, while a taxi to Lindos may cost ₪280-400 and take about an hour.

Need a car?

A car is unnecessary if you stay in Rhodes Town and mainly plan to explore the city, Elli Beach, and organized excursions. Renting one for two or three days is worthwhile for families and travelers who want to combine Lindos, Anthony Quinn Bay, Tsambika Beach, the Valley of the Butterflies, and inland villages without depending on timetables.

Rent a car in Rhodes

Tips

KTEL buses are fairly convenient along the east-coast route from Rhodes Town to Faliraki and Lindos, but they fill up in summer, so arrive early. Most of the Old Town is explored on foot; if driving, park outside the walls and leave no belongings visible.

Kosher & Jewish

Chabad / community

Chabad of Rhodes operates in Rhodes Town, close to the area where many Israeli travelers stay. Check its current address, opening times, services, and seasonal Shabbat meals in advance, and register ahead. The Old Town also contains Kahal Shalom, Greece's oldest synagogue, beside the Jewish Museum; it is an important heritage site with services on selected occasions, but not a regular substitute for Chabad or a kosher restaurant.

Leof. Iraklidon 84, Ialisos 851 00, יווןNavigate

Kosher food

The island's kosher selection is limited and seasonal, so observant travelers should not rely on finding suitable restaurants spontaneously. Many Israelis pre-order meals from Chabad when available, book an apartment with a kitchenette, and buy clearly certified packaged products at larger supermarkets. Travelers comfortable with vegetarian food can find Greek salad, stuffed vegetables, fava, cheeses, and fish, but a shared kitchen is not kosher.

Local tips

Good to know about Rhodes

  • 📍For couples who want restaurants and evenings on foot, I recommend Rhodes Town; families seeking a resort and beach should choose Faliraki or Kallithea, while windsurfers are better suited to Ixia.
  • 🌊The east coast around Kallithea, Faliraki, and Tsambika is calmer for swimming, while the west coast at Ixia is usually windier and rougher.
  • 🚗If renting a car, bring both your Israeli license and an international driving permit, and do not attempt to drive into the Old Town lanes or central Lindos.
  • In July and August, reach Lindos by 8:30 and Anthony Quinn Bay by 9:00, or you will spend time hunting for parking and find the beach extremely crowded.
  • 💳Pay by card in euros and always decline conversion to shekels at terminals or ATMs, as the offered local conversion is almost always more expensive.
  • ✡️Kosher dining in Rhodes is limited and seasonal, so contact Chabad Rhodes in advance, reserve meals and Shabbat arrangements early, and do not rely on a spontaneous booking.

"Rhodes gives me exactly the combination Israelis love: an easy beach holiday, an Old Town made for wandering, and beautiful coves within an hour’s drive. The moment I walk down to St Paul’s Bay in Lindos and see the acropolis rising above the water, I remember why this island is so easy to fall for."

Loves

My local secret is renting a small license-free boat in Faliraki early in the morning and cruising independently to Ladiko and Anthony Quinn bays before the tour boats arrive. It is one of the island’s most enjoyable experiences, especially for Israeli couples and groups of friends.

Skip

I would not waste an evening at an Old Town restaurant with a huge photo menu on Socratous Street, where prices are touristy and the food is usually mediocre.

Boutique pick

I start the day in Lindos before 9:00, climb to the acropolis while it is still comfortable, swim at St Paul’s Bay, and continue to Tsambika Beach. In the evening, we return to Rhodes Town, wander through the Old Town lanes, and finish at Mandraki Harbour at sunset, with a seasonal kosher meal reserved in advance.
