Overview

🇬🇷Paxos

🇬🇷Greece

Paxos is the smallest and best-kept secret of the Ionian Islands — a carpet of ancient olive groves tumbling down to crystal-clear turquoise coves. The stone-house village of Gaios, with its bobbing fishing boats and waterfront tavernas, feels like Greece before the crowds arrived. If you're after genuine tranquility, flawless swimming, and hopping sea caves by kayak, this is your island.

Local tips

Good to know about Paxos

  • Rent a small motorboat (no license needed) from Gaios harbour on your own early in the morning, before the tour boats arrive. The blue caves of Antipaxos look completely different in the quiet of 08:00.
  • 🛞Rent a scooter or ATV only from Vassilis's shop on the main street in Gaios — he is the only one who provides a hand-drawn map with the unmarked dirt tracks leading to secluded beaches like Marmaria and Ormos Grammata.
  • 🫒Paxos is covered by around 300,000 ancient olive trees. At any restaurant, ask specifically for local olive oil instead of what they automatically bring — the difference in flavour from Kouvertos or Milea is dramatic.
  • 🌙Staying in Lakka is preferable to Gaios for peace and stargazing. The village shuts down early — buy wine and snacks from the local mini-market before 21:00 and sit on the edge of the lagoon.

"Paxos is the island Israelis haven't yet ruined for themselves. It doesn't try to impress you — no water park, no nightclub, no souvenir market. Just deep quiet, water in a colour I still haven't found a name for in Hebrew, and 500-year-old olive trees. Anyone arriving expecting loud Greek fun — I send them elsewhere. Anyone who wants to return home genuinely rested — Paxos."

Loves

There is a tiny taverna in the village of Magazia called Nassos. No sign. Two tables outside. The woman serves only what her fisherman husband brought in that morning — sometimes sardines on charcoal, sometimes octopus that dried on the line for three days. I paid 14 euros for a full meal there and haven't been able to forget it for three years.

Skip

The boats advertising 'Blue Caves + Antipaxos tour' from Gaios at 10:00 — a pretty photo on the flyer, 90 people on one deck, stopping everywhere for only ten minutes, and 35 euros per person for an experience that renting your own boat with a friend will do ten times better at half the price.

Boutique pick

I build a 'three days, three speeds' package for 2 or 4 people: Day one — independent boat rental to Antipaxos with a picnic I prepare in advance from the Gaios market (cheeses, greens and local wine). Day two — a walking tour between the inland villages of Ozias and Bogdanatika with a guide who is the son of an olive oil producing family, including a tasting directly from the press. Day three — lazy morning in Lakka, coffee, a book, and meet me at Taverna Romantica facing the lagoon at 13:00 for a farewell lunch.

Client stories

What returning travelers say about Paxos

"We arrived in Paxos with low expectations after a week in Santorini that was crowded and exhausting. What we found in Lakka was almost embarrassing in its quietness — two days without checking our phones. We rented a boat without knowing what we were doing, reached Voutoumi on Antipaxos at eight in the morning completely alone, and Ron cried a little. Next time — Paxos directly, no prelude."

Noa and Ron Cohen

Couple, 5 nights, September, staying in Lakka

"We went with three children (11, 8 and 5) and worried the island would bore them. In practice — the boat was the best adventure we have had in five years of trips. The youngest called it 'our pirate ship'. The sea is completely transparent, you can see the bottom at three metres depth. Maya (our VAYULOR agent) made sure we had snorkel gear and a prepared picnic — I didn't have to think about anything."

Uri and Michal Shapira with kids

Family with children, 4 nights, July, apartment in Gaios

"I travelled alone to Paxos and was not sure it was a good idea. I was afraid I would be stuck with myself. What actually happened — two days of reading on Monodendri beach without interruption, a long conversation with the owner of Taverna Nassos who told me about the 1987 storm that uprooted thousands of olive trees, and a walking route VAYULOR designed for me between Ozias and a viewpoint above the caves — three hours without seeing a living soul. My advice: bring one more book than you think you will read."

FAQ

Common questions about Paxos

Do Israelis need a visa for Greece, and are there any documents specific to Paxos to know about?

No visa is required — Israel is part of the Schengen visa-waiver agreement, and a valid Israeli ID card is sufficient (passport recommended but not mandatory). Paxos is not a direct destination: the flight is to Corfu (CFU), then a ferry to Gaios — approximately 1.5 hours depending on the boat type. Buy ferry tickets in advance through Kamelia Lines in summer as they fill up.

What is the best time to visit Paxos, and what should you expect in terms of weather and tourist crowds?

The golden window is May-June and September. During these months the sea is already warm (24-26°C), the sun is stable, and the island is not flooded with tourists. July-August is peak Paxos — restaurants are booked two weeks ahead, boat rental goes up roughly 30%, and on beaches like Voutoumi on Antipaxos there are times you cannot find space to lie down. Many Israelis come during Sukkot — expect Israeli neighbours and inflated prices during that period.

How many days are recommended in Paxos, and how do you combine it with Corfu?

3 nights in Paxos is the real minimum — first day to get orientated, second day for Antipaxos, third day for the inland villages. 4-5 nights is the perfect recipe. You can absolutely combine with Corfu — my recommendation is to start with two days in Corfu Town (UNESCO Old Town, restaurants on Liston), then move to Paxos for the rest of the trip. The reverse is less effective — Paxos will ruin Corfu for you.

What is a realistic daily budget for an Israeli in Paxos, including accommodation, food and rentals?

Paxos is more expensive than average Greece. Accommodation: an apartment with kitchenette in Lakka costs ₪650-900 per night for a couple in September, ₪900-1,400 at peak July-August. Food: a full taverna meal with wine ₪120-180 per person, coffee ₪18-25. Small motorboat rental: ₪550-750 per day (for 2-4 people, split between you). Scooter: ₪180-260 per day. Reasonable total daily budget for a couple: ₪1,200-1,800 in shoulder season, ₪1,800-2,500 at peak.
