Old Town and Venetian Harbour
This is Chania's photogenic heart: the Topanas lanes, Chalidon Street, Küçük Hasan Mosque and the lighthouse promenade, with boutique stays such as Casa Delfino in Venetian buildings. It feels romantic in the morning and lively once the restaurants and bars along Akti Kountourioti fill up. The trade-offs are noise, stairs, almost no parking and awkward luggage access.
Nea Chora
This is the most balanced choice for Israeli visitors: a sandy beach and tavernas along Akti Papanikoli, about a 15-minute walk from the Venetian Harbour. Accommodation is dominated by apartments and small hotels, including Christina Beach Hotel right by the water. The beach is convenient rather than spectacular, and the promenade and sea-facing rooms can be noisy in August.
Koum Kapi and the New Town
Cocktail bars and cafés line the sea along Akti Miaouli, while Hyperion City Hotel & Spa provides a modern base within walking distance of the Old Town and Municipal Market. It is easy to go out and return on foot, with a younger atmosphere than the harbour. The shore is narrow and partly rocky, parking is difficult and music and traffic can continue late.
Agia Marina and Platanias
This resort strip is popular with Israelis for its long beach, beach clubs, water sports, supermarkets and resorts, with options such as Minoa Palace Resort at the edge of Platanias and adults-only Domes Noruz Chania in nearby Agioi Apostoloi. Restaurants and bars stay busy around Platanias Square and the old Kissamou-Chanion road. It works well for families, but summer traffic is heavy, the area feels touristy and the Old Town can be 25 to 40 minutes away.
Agioi Apostoloi and Kato Daratso
Three sheltered coves, a pine park and shallow water around Iguana Beach make this area especially easy with children; Airis Boutique Hotel and numerous family apartments are among the local options. Frequent buses run into Chania, while Golden Beach and large supermarkets are close by. Evenings are quiet, so nightlife seekers must travel to Platanias or the city.
Akrotiri Peninsula
Around Stavros, Kalathas and Marathi, visitors get clear coves, villas and open views, while properties across greater Akrotiri cater to resort-style stays outside the center. Stavros Beach is known from the film Zorba the Greek, and Seitan Limania is spectacular but steep and crowded. A car is almost essential, nightlife is limited and reaching the Old Town takes roughly 25 to 40 minutes.

Elafonissi and southern villages
Leave by 07:00 to reach Elafonissi ahead of the buses and secure a place on the lagoon's eastern side before 09:00. Wade across to the island and follow the path for several minutes to find quieter coves, taking care not to enter protected dunes. On the return, stop at Chrysoskalitissa Monastery and in Elos for coffee, juice or a simple vegetarian meal for those not requiring certification. The drive is long and winding, so families may prefer a private driver or shared driving.

City Beaches and Agia Marina
Start at the sheltered coves of Agioi Apostoloi or Iguana Beach, especially suitable for children when the sea is calm. At midday continue along the coast to Agia Marina for beach beds and water sports, or spend a slower afternoon overlooking Thodorou Island. Toward evening, climb to Pano Platanias for the view, then descend to the main square and bars along the old road. Drive in the morning to the 17th-century Agia Triada Monastery, continue to Gouverneto Monastery and only hike toward Bear Cave if weather and conditions allow. Anyone choosing Seitan Limania should arrive before 09:00, wear proper shoes and expect a steep descent and inquisitive goats. Return via the Venizelos Graves for a broad sunset view over Chania.

Imbros Gorge or a Slow Halepa Day
Active travelers should leave early for Imbros Gorge, an approximately 8 km downhill route that is shorter and easier than Samaria, finishing in Komitades before the hottest hours. Continue to Frangokastello Beach and its Venetian fortress if a pickup or organized tour has been arranged. For a city day, explore Halepa, visit the Archaeological Museum and Eleftherios Venizelos House, then swim at Nea Chora. End the trip at sunset near Talos Square and make a final shopping pass along Skridlof and Chalidon streets.

Getting around
From the airport
Chania Airport is on Akrotiri, about 14 km from the city: an official taxi to the Old Town generally costs ₪100-140 and takes 20 to 30 minutes, with Nea Chora slightly farther. For Agia Marina or Platanias, allow 35 to 50 minutes and roughly ₪170-260 depending on traffic and arrival time. KTEL buses run to the city around flight schedules, take about 30 minutes and cost approximately ₪10-15; continue west from the central bus station by local bus or taxi. There is no train, and Uber operates through licensed taxis with limited availability, so families often pre-book transfers for about ₪130-300 depending on destination and vehicle size.
Need a car?
A car is unnecessary when staying in the Old Town, Nea Chora or Koum Kapi: walk locally and use buses for nearby beaches. Families based in Agia Marina can manage without one, although a two- or three-day rental pays off for Elafonissi, Falassarna, Theriso and Akrotiri. A car is strongly recommended for villa stays, families with small children and travelers wanting early access to Balos or remote beaches; choose a small vehicle and never attempt the Old Town lanes.
Tips
Use public parking around Talos Square, Pireos Street or the East Moat Theatre rather than entering the harbour's pedestrianized and one-way lanes. Intercity schedules and tickets are available through KTEL Chania and at its bus station; westbound buses to Platanias become very crowded in July and August. The land route to Balos includes a rough dirt section that some rental agreements exclude, making the boat from Kissamos the easier alternative.

Chabad / community
Chania has no permanent Chabad house with a kosher restaurant or reliable daily minyan year-round. Seasonal or holiday Jewish programming and Shabbat meals may occasionally be arranged, but should never be assumed without advance confirmation; Crete's active Chabad center is in Heraklion, around two hours away. In the Old Town, Etz Hayyim Synagogue on Kondylaki Street is a Jewish heritage and community site, not a Chabad house, and does not guarantee regular minyanim.

I never recommend choosing a restaurant simply because a waiter waves you in along Akti Tompazi in the Old Harbour. On the front row you often pay more for the view than the food, so check the menu and prices or look around Splantzia and Daliani Street instead.

I begin at 8:00 with warm bougatsa and Greek coffee near the Municipal Market, walk through the harbour and Topanas lanes from 9:30, and drive to Marathi Beach at 11:30 for a long swim and an unhurried lunch.
