From the airport
Metro line M3 reaches Syntagma from the airport in about 40 minutes and costs roughly ₪38 one way. An official taxi to the center generally costs around ₪160 by day or ₪220 at night and takes 35 to 50 minutes, depending on traffic.
Need a car?
No. In central Athens, traffic, narrow streets and limited parking make a car more trouble than help; the metro and walking cover the main sights well. Rent one only when leaving for Cape Sounion, the Peloponnese or another out-of-town destination.
Tips
Use the metro for trips between Syntagma, Monastiraki and Piraeus port, and FREENOW or Uber to book taxis with clearer pricing. Keep phones and wallets in front pockets on the metro and in busy squares, especially around Monastiraki.
