Overview
🇹🇭Bangkok
🇹🇭Thailand
Bangkok is Thailand’s exhilarating urban stop, where most Israeli travelers spend a few nights at the beginning of their trip or just before flying home. Days move between the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, Siam Paragon and CentralWorld malls, and the vast Chatuchak Weekend Market; after dark, Tichuca and Sky Bar reveal the illuminated skyline. Five-star hotels, massages, night markets and cruises on the Chao Phraya offer exceptional value, while Bangkok’s Chabad House and kosher Deli K make the city easier for observant travelers.

Where to stay
Where to stay in Bangkok
Each area and who it suits best.
Sukhumvit: Asok and Nana
This is the easiest base for travelers who want to be in the action, with BTS and MRT stations at Asok, Terminal 21 mall, bars along Sukhumvit Road, and nightlife on Soi 11. Hotels such as Grande Centre Point Terminal 21 and Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit are exceptionally well located. The trade-off is traffic, crowded pavements, and late-night noise, especially around Nana and Soi 11.
Sukhumvit: Phrom Phong and Thong Lo
Phrom Phong brings together Emporium, EmQuartier, and EmSphere around Sukhumvit Soi 24, while Thong Lo offers cocktail bars, restaurants, and local design around Soi 55. Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit and 137 Pillars Suites suit travelers who prefer style over chaos. Rates are higher here, and reaching the Grand Palace or Old Town can take an hour in rush-hour traffic.
Siam and Ratchaprasong
The zone between Siam Paragon, CentralWorld, MBK, and Pratunam is the practical choice for families and Israelis arriving with a shopping list, from international labels, Uniqlo, and Apple to bargain fashion at Platinum. Siam Kempinski and Centara Grand at CentralWorld let guests return to their rooms without sitting in traffic. It is busy and highly commercial, with little neighborhood atmosphere, and the best hotels are not cheap.
Silom and Sathorn
Silom combines BTS and MRT access, Lumphini Park, street food around Sala Daeng, and nightlife on Silom Soi 2 and Soi 4. SO/ Bangkok by the park and The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon suit travelers seeking a design-led hotel with easy city access. Parts of Sathorn feel distinctly corporate by day, while Patpong can be crowded and touristy at night.
Chao Phraya Riverside
The river delivers cinematic Bangkok, with boats passing Wat Arun, promenade sunsets, and ICONSIAM across the water. Mandarin Oriental, The Peninsula, and Chatrium Hotel Riverside offer pools, views, and shuttle boats. It is a calmer, more impressive stay, but the surrounding streets are less walkable and reaching Sukhumvit nightlife takes longer.
Old Town: Rattanakosin and Banglamphu
This is where you find the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Khao San Road, and the lanes around Phra Athit Road, within easy reach of the essential sights. Riva Surya Bangkok is a pleasant riverside option, while Nouvo City Hotel is popular in the mid-range. Prices are attractive and the atmosphere lively, but there is no adjacent BTS or MRT station, and Khao San remains noisy late into the night.

Suggested plan
A perfect Bangkok itinerary
Day by day, so you can picture the whole trip.
- 1
Day 1
Arrival, Siam, and a skyline sunset
After check-in, ease into the city at Siam Paragon and Siam Square, then walk along the elevated walkway toward CentralWorld and Erawan Shrine. Families can spend two hours at SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World, while dedicated shoppers may prefer MBK or Platinum Fashion Mall. Head to Mahanakhon SkyWalk before sunset, ideally with a pre-booked ticket. Finish at JODD FAIRS Ratchada night market or with a kosher meal arranged through Chabad.
- 2
Day 2
Grand Palace, temples, and the river
Reach the Grand Palace before 08:30 with shoulders and knees covered, and see Wat Phra Kaew before heat and tour groups take over. Walk onward to Wat Pho, then use the ferry from Tha Tien to Wat Arun. For a kosher lunch, continue to Chabad on Rambuttri by prior arrangement, then explore Phra Athit and Banglamphu's lanes. At sunset, ride a public Chao Phraya boat or sit opposite Wat Arun at Vivi The Coffee Place, then sample Khao San in the evening without committing to sleeping amid its noise.
- 3
Day 3
Chinatown, Talat Noi, and ICONSIAM
Begin at Wat Traimit and its Golden Buddha, then walk along Yaowarat Road and Sampeng Lane for fabrics, accessories, and near-wholesale souvenirs. Continue through Talat Noi's alleys for murals, old workshops, and So Heng Tai mansion. As most Chinatown stalls are not kosher, bring a packed meal or eat beforehand at a kosher venue. Cross to ICONSIAM in the afternoon for shopping and the fountain display, then finish with sunset on the promenade or an evening river cruise.
- 4
Day 4
Weekend market or Ayutthaya
If it is Saturday or Sunday, reach Chatuchak Weekend Market around 09:00 before the heat, and browse clothing, homeware, Thai art, and accessories across thousands of stalls. Continue to nearby Or Tor Kor Market for tropical fruit and packaged goods, then rest in Chatuchak Park. If you are in Bangkok midweek, replace this with a chauffeured day trip to Ayutthaya, visiting Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Si Sanphet, and Wat Chaiwatthanaram toward sunset. Return to Bangkok in the evening and pre-order kosher food, as kosher options en route are extremely limited.
- 5
Day 5
Parks, Sukhumvit, and nightlife
Start early in Lumphini Park and watch the city exercise around the lake, then cross the Green Bridge to Benjakitti Park and its wetland paths beneath the skyline. Continue to Terminal 21 at Asok and EmQuartier or EmSphere at Phrom Phong for air-conditioning, brands, and final purchases. In the evening, explore Sukhumvit Soi 11 or Thonglor Soi 55; couples can reserve a rooftop bar such as Octave after checking the dress code. Travelers preferring an Israeli and kosher evening can arrange a meal or activity with Chabad in Sukhumvit.
- 6
Day 6
Green Bangkok and final shopping
Take a morning taxi to Khlong Toei pier, make the short boat crossing to Bang Krachao, and rent bicycles to ride among canals, temples, and Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park; on weekends, add Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market. Return to the city at midday, freshen up, and leave time for final purchases at CentralWorld, Siam Paragon, or MBK according to your shopping list. Pick up packed kosher food before flying and allow at least one extra hour for traffic to Suvarnabhumi. If the flight departs late, one final riverside sunset is wiser than another long cross-city journey.

Getting around
From the airport
Most international flights arrive at Suvarnabhumi: the Airport Rail Link reaches Phaya Thai in about 30 minutes for roughly ₪5, with an onward BTS connection; an official taxi to Sukhumvit or Siam usually costs ₪45-80 including tolls and takes 35-75 minutes. Grab or Bolt collect from designated points and typically cost ₪45-95 depending on traffic and demand; a pre-booked private transfer is about ₪90-180 per vehicle. From Don Mueang, take a taxi for around ₪35-70 and 30-70 minutes, or the SRT Red Line to Krung Thep Aphiwat followed by the MRT, for roughly ₪4-10 in total.
Need a car?
Do not rent a car for Bangkok: left-side driving, motorbikes, congestion, and awkward parking make it a liability even for families. Couples and younger travelers should combine BTS, MRT, Grab, and river boats; families with children or groups planning Ayutthaya, a floating market, or Kanchanaburi will find a chauffeured van more practical. A rental car only makes sense when Bangkok is the starting point for a road trip beyond the city.
Tips
Install both Grab and Bolt; Grab is more consistent, Bolt is sometimes cheaper, and in a street taxi insist on the meter rather than an inflated fixed fare. Between 07:30-09:30 and 16:30-19:30, favor the BTS or MRT, and use Chao Phraya Express boats or inexpensive cross-river ferries for the temples. BTS and MRT use separate ticketing systems, and checking the exact platform and exit matters because a large junction can add 15 minutes of walking.
Kosher & Jewish
Chabad / community
Chabad Bangkok is in Banglamphu near Khao San, at 96 Rambuttri Road, and is the main address for Israeli visitors seeking prayers, Shabbat and holiday meals, and Jewish assistance; advance registration is normally required for meals. A Chabad presence also operates in the Sukhumvit area near major hotels and malls, but visitors should verify the current address, minyan schedule, and meal availability through official channels before arriving.
Kosher food
The Chabad compound on Rambuttri has a kosher restaurant serving Israeli and Thai-style dishes, making it the most familiar solution near Khao San; kosher catering and community-linked dining also operate around Sukhumvit, but names, hours, and certification can change, so confirm with Chabad first. Villa Market and Tops Food Hall branches in Sukhumvit occasionally carry wine, snacks, and imported products bearing kosher symbols, though selection is not reliable. Many observant travelers order meals from Chabad, bring essentials, and rely on fruit and sealed products with clear certification.

Local tips
Good to know about Bangkok
- 💳ATMs from banks such as Bangkok Bank usually charge a local fee of about 220 baht, roughly ₪23, so withdraw a reasonably large amount and always decline the machine’s shekel conversion.
- 🚆During rush hour use the BTS and MRT, and for door-to-door rides order Grab or Bolt rather than arguing with taxi drivers who refuse to use the meter.
- ⏰Reach the Grand Palace and Wat Pho by 8:30 a.m. with shoulders and knees covered, as the heat and queues become considerably more tiring after 10:00.
- 🏨For couples and first-time visitors I recommend Asok or Phrom Phong near the BTS, Siam for families, and the riverfront around Saphan Taksin for a quieter luxury stay.
- 🎟️Prebook a sunset slot at King Power Mahanakhon and a table at Vertigo or Octave, especially for weekends and the dry winter season from November through February.
- 🎰Bangkok has no legal casinos, so avoid private gambling rooms offered around Nana or Patpong; for rooftop bars, dress smartly and carry a passport copy for identification.
- 🙏At temples remove your shoes, never point your feet toward Buddha images and do not touch anyone’s head; in restaurants, round up or leave 5% to 10% when service is not included.
- ✡️For kosher meals or Shabbat, check reservation times in advance with the Chabad centers around Rambuttri near Khao San and in Sukhumvit, and never assume that an Israeli-style menu is certified kosher.
- 🌧️From May through October carry a compact umbrella and quick-drying sandals, but skip a heavy raincoat because Bangkok’s humidity makes it uncomfortable within minutes.
- 📱Install an AIS eSIM before landing or buy an official SIM at the AIS airport counter, then set up Grab, Google Maps and offline Thai translation immediately.

"To me, Bangkok is a city that engages every sense at once: the scent of mango sticky rice, express boats on the Chao Phraya and BTS trains gliding above the traffic. Israelis fall for it because they can begin the morning facing the spires of Wat Arun, shop seriously at Siam Paragon and finish with a sunset drink at King Power Mahanakhon. Behind the noise are wonderfully quiet moments, especially in the lanes of Talat Noi just before the evening lights come on. This is not merely a stopover on the way to the islands, but a city that deserves at least three full days."
Loves
My local secret is to reach Talat Noi around 4:30 p.m., wander past its murals, Chinese workshops and old wooden houses, then secure a riverside table at Hong Sieng Kong for sunset. Visit on a weekday for quieter lanes and beautiful light over the Chao Phraya.
Skip
Never believe a tuk-tuk driver outside the Grand Palace who claims it is “closed today” and offers a cheap tour of gem shops. It is a long-running scam designed to waste your time and pressure you into buying.
Boutique pick
I start at Wat Pho at 8:00 a.m., before the heat and tour groups, cross by ferry to Wat Arun and take a Chao Phraya Express Boat toward modern Bangkok around noon. The afternoon is split between MBK and Siam Paragon according to your shopping style, followed by a prebooked 5:30 p.m. sunset visit to King Power Mahanakhon. I finish with a kosher dinner in Sukhumvit, then either a polished drink at Octave or an evening stroll through Jodd Fairs.

FAQ
Common questions about Bangkok
Do Israelis need a visa for Bangkok?
Israeli passport holders can generally enter Bangkok and Thailand visa-free for a tourist stay of up to 60 days, subject to passport validity, an onward ticket and sometimes proof of accommodation. Entry rules can change, so check the latest requirements, including Thailand’s digital arrival form, shortly before departure.
Are there direct flights from Tel Aviv to Bangkok, and how long do they take?
Direct flights operate from Tel Aviv to Bangkok, primarily with EL AL and with additional seasonal options, taking about 11 hours outbound and around 12 hours on the return. Connections through Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Addis Ababa can cost less but usually add 3–7 hours to the journey.
When is the best time to visit Bangkok, and what should I pack?
The most pleasant and popular period in Bangkok is November through February, with lower humidity and less rain, while April is exceptionally hot and September–October are wetter. Pack light clothing, a compact umbrella and comfortable shoes, plus shoulder-covering tops and long trousers for the Grand Palace and temples.
How many days should I spend in Bangkok, and what destinations combine well with it?
Three to four nights in Bangkok work well for a first visit, while five nights allow time for markets, shopping, dining and nightlife without rushing. Israelis commonly combine it with Koh Samui, Phuket or Krabi, and on longer trips with Chiang Mai and Koh Phangan.
What is the easiest way to get around Bangkok?
The BTS Skytrain and MRT are the fastest ways to travel between Sukhumvit, Silom, Siam and Chatuchak without getting trapped in Bangkok traffic. Use Grab for short or late-night rides, and take the Chao Phraya River boats for convenient access to the Grand Palace and Wat Arun.
How much does a Bangkok vacation cost?
A comfortable Bangkok budget is around ₪350–650 per person per day for a couple, including a good central hotel, food, transport and attractions; a luxury stay with a five-star hotel, massages and rooftop bars is closer to ₪700–1,200 per person daily. Return flights from Tel Aviv typically cost ₪2,400–4,500, with higher fares during peak periods and Israeli holidays.
Is Bangkok safe for Israeli travelers?
Bangkok is generally safe for tourists, but watch for pickpockets in crowded areas, suspicious offers near the Grand Palace and tuk-tuk drivers pushing commission-based shopping stops. Never leave your passport as a deposit, use Grab or metered taxis, and avoid public political statements.
What should I not miss in Bangkok, and is it better for families or couples?
A first Bangkok visit should include the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, a river crossing to Wat Arun, shopping at ICONSIAM or Siam Paragon, and an evening on Chinatown’s Yaowarat Road. Families particularly enjoy SEA LIFE Bangkok and Ancient City, while couples often choose a riverside hotel, a quality massage and rooftop venues such as Vertigo or Tichuca.
Where should I go out in Bangkok, and are there casinos?
Bangkok nightlife centers on Sukhumvit and Silom rooftop bars, RCA clubs and fashionable Thonglor venues, with Tichuca and The Club at Koi among the popular names. Bangkok has no legal casinos, and gambling is prohibited in Thailand, so avoid private gaming rooms or offers from drivers.
Are kosher food and Chabad available in Bangkok?
Chabad Bangkok is located in the Khao San area near Rambuttri Road, offering a kosher restaurant, prayers, Shabbat meals and assistance for Israeli travelers. Reserve Shabbat meals in advance, and elsewhere do not assume vegetarian dishes are kosher, as they may contain fish sauce, oyster sauce or be prepared with non-kosher utensils.
