Lucerne
The most convenient base for a classic Swiss trip: Chapel Bridge, the Lake Lucerne promenade and the Old Town are walkable, while trains provide easy access to Titlis, Pilatus and Rigi. Hotels such as Hotel des Balances in the Old Town or Radisson Blu near the station are exceptionally well placed, but central rooms are expensive and those facing Weinmarkt can be noisy on summer evenings.
Interlaken
This is an excellent logistical base for the Jungfrau region, with trains from both Interlaken Ost and Interlaken West, paragliders landing at Höhematte and numerous rafting and canyoning operators along Höheweg. Victoria-Jungfrau is the luxury landmark, while simpler hotels cluster near West station. The town itself feels more touristy and less magical than the mountain villages, and its main street becomes crowded with groups during the day.
Grindelwald
Hotel windows face the Eiger’s immense north wall, and the Eiger Express from Grindelwald Terminal greatly shortens the trip toward Jungfraujoch and the ski slopes. Bergwelt Grindelwald suits design-and-spa seekers, while Sunstar stands directly opposite the First cable car. Prices soar in peak seasons, Dorfstrasse sees heavy bus traffic by day, and evenings are far quieter than in Interlaken.
Lauterbrunnen or Wengen
Lauterbrunnen occupies a valley of 72 waterfalls, with Staubbach facing the main street and Trümmelbach a short bus ride away; car-free Wengen overlooks the entire valley, with Hotel Regina and Beausite Park Hotel as established choices. The area is magical early in the morning and after day-trippers leave. The trade-off is minimal nightlife, while in Wengen every suitcase, grocery run and excursion depends on a train or cable car.
Zurich
The city suits travelers who want Bahnhofstrasse’s major brands alongside bars on Langstrasse, nightlife in Zürich West and summer swimming at Seebad Enge. Hotels such as 25hours Langstrasse attract a younger crowd, while Baur au Lac represents lakeside luxury. It is the easiest gateway with nonstop flights, but it is expensive, noisier around Langstrasse and inefficient for repeated day trips deep into the Alps.
Zermatt
A car-free village beneath the Matterhorn, with a lively Bahnhofstrasse, the Gornergrat railway and unforgettable views from Sunnegga. Hotels such as Mont Cervin Palace and The Omnia make it a strong honeymoon or luxury ski choice. Cars must be left in Täsch before continuing by train, and lodging, skiing and dining rank among Switzerland’s most expensive.

Zurich and the lake
Land in Zurich, leave the luggage and walk from Bahnhofstrasse into the lanes of Niederdorf, past Grossmünster and along Limmatquai. Lucerne and Mount Pilatus

In clear weather, follow the Golden Round Trip: boat to Alpnachstad, cogwheel railway up Pilatus, cable cars down to Kriens and a bus back, with a picnic lunch at the summit. Return for the night in Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Grindelwald or Interlaken.

Jungfraujoch and Grindelwald
Reserve an early departure and travel via Grindelwald Terminal and the Eiger Express to Jungfraujoch, aiming to arrive before 10:00 to beat the heaviest crowds. Visit the Sphinx Observatory, Ice Palace and Snow Fun Park when operating, carrying lunch from the valley. On the descent, stop at Kleine Scheidegg or return to Grindelwald and ascend First for the First Cliff Walk and shorter trails toward Bachalpsee. If the forecast is cloudy, postpone Jungfraujoch and cruise Lake Thun with a visit to Oberhofen Castle instead, as the high fare is hard to justify without visibility.

Interlaken, the lakes and Harder Kulm
Begin at Höhematte and watch paragliders land beneath the Jungfrau, then choose an activity: cruise from near Interlaken Ost across Lake Brienz to Giessbach or travel to the village of Iseltwald. Near sunset, take the funicular to Harder Kulm as the light falls across both lakes. Walk along Höheweg in the evening; nightlife here is modest and centered on bars and hostels rather than large clubs.

Bern and return to Zurich

Eat a picnic in the garden or choose a simple vegetarian meal after applying your own kosher requirements, leaving time for chocolate and shopping around Spitalgasse. The train from Bern takes about one hour to Zurich and roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to the airport, but allow at least a two-hour buffer before check-in.

From the airport
From Zurich Airport, direct trains leave beneath the terminal for Zürich HB, taking 10-15 minutes and costing about ₪30; Uber or a taxi takes 20-35 minutes and costs roughly ₪190-320. Lucerne is reached directly or with one easy change in about 1 hour 10 minutes for ₪130-150, while Interlaken takes approximately 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes and costs ₪280-330 at full fare; a private shuttle there generally costs ₪1,500-2,300 per vehicle. From Geneva Airport, the train to the center takes 7 minutes and costs about ₪15-25, a taxi or Uber takes 15-25 minutes and costs ₪180-280, and Zermatt requires a train via Visp taking roughly 3.5-4 hours for ₪350-430.
Need a car?
Most itineraries do not require a car: for couples and travelers linking Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, Wengen, Grindelwald or Zermatt, trains are more convenient and reliable, and several key villages are car-free anyway. A car can pay off for a family carrying equipment, a stay in an isolated village or a route through lakes and mountain passes, but allow ₪80-180 per day for parking. Winter tires and sometimes chains are necessary in cold conditions, and a car does not eliminate cable-car fees or parking charges in Täsch or Lauterbrunnen.
Tips

I do not recommend going up to Jungfraujoch simply because everyone else does, especially on a cloudy day when you may pay hundreds of shekels to see little more than fog. Check the live webcams that morning, and if visibility is poor choose Schynige Platte, Mürren, or a cruise on Lake Brienz instead.
Boutique pick
I start at 8:00 a.m. on the pier in Lucerne, board the boat to Vitznau for coffee facing the mountains, then take the cogwheel railway to Rigi Kulm before the day groups arrive. At lunchtime we have rösti with a view, descend by cable car to Weggis, and swim in the lake if it is a warm summer day. Around 6:00 p.m. we return to Lucerne, cross Chapel Bridge in the golden light, and finish among the painted lanes of the Old Town.
