Kościelisko
This village stretches along Nędzy Kubińca with superb Tatra views and quick access to the Kościeliska Valley and Mroźna Cave. There is almost no street life after dark, and without a car you will depend on buses or taxis into Zakopane.
Białka Tatrzańska
The village along Środkowa Street combines the Kotelnica Białczańska ski area with the Terma Bania hot-pool complex, making it especially easy for children and beginners. Hotel Bania Thermal & Ski is practically attached to the main attractions. Prices climb during winter and school holidays, the main road gets congested, and summer evenings offer less than Zakopane.
Bukowina Tatrzańska
This elevated village around Sportowa and Wierch Olczański offers mountain views, polished guesthouses, and access to Termy Bukovina. Hotel Bukovina suits couples wanting hot pools and a spa without Krupówki's commotion. It is less convenient for nightly outings in Zakopane, and a drive that looks short on the map can become lengthy in traffic.
Štrbské Pleso, Slovak Tatras
The resort around Štrbské pleso is an elegant base for hikes to Popradské pleso and Predné Solisko, with Grand Hotel Kempinski High Tatras directly on the lake. The Tatra Electric Railway links it with Starý Smokovec and Tatranská Lomnica. Kościeliska Valley and thermal baths
Start at the Kiry entrance at 08:00 and follow the Kościeliski stream to Ornak hut, a beautiful family-friendly round trip of about 12 kilometers. In summer, when open, add Mroźna Cave with closed shoes and warm clothing; with small children, keep to the valley and bring a picnic. In the afternoon, head to Termy Chochołowskie, a large complex with hot pools, slides, and a quieter adult zone. Stay into the evening as the lights come on and family crowds begin to thin.

The Slovak Tatras
Drive early to Tatranská Lomnica, about 1.5 to 2 hours from Zakopane without congestion, and prebook the cable car to Skalnaté pleso; the highly limited Lomnický štít summit ticket is separate. After the views and a short lakeside walk, take the Tatra Electric Railway to Starý Smokovec and the funicular to Hrebienok. Walk to the Studený potok waterfalls and Rainerova chata on a relatively easy, family-suitable route. Return before evening and carry passports even though there is normally no fixed check within the Schengen area.

Štrbské Pleso and return

From the airport
Kraków is the most convenient airport for the Polish side; direct buses to Zakopane cost about ₪25-45 and take roughly 2.25 to 3 hours, depending on traffic. A prebooked shared shuttle is around ₪90-170 per person, while a private transfer costs about ₪450-750 per vehicle each way; Uber and Bolt operate in Kraków, though a long ride to Zakopane can reach ₪400-700. Trains from Kraków cost roughly ₪25-55 and take 2.5 to 3.5 hours, but departures are less frequent. For the Slovak side, Kraków or Budapest plus a transfer is practical, while from Poprad-Tatry Airport, when a suitable flight exists, a taxi to Starý Smokovec or Štrbské Pleso costs about ₪90-180 and takes 20 to 35 minutes.
Need a car?
A couple staying in central Zakopane and focusing on popular trails, cable cars, and thermal baths does not need a car: frequent minibuses serve Palenica Białczańska, Kuźnice, and the Kościeliska Valley. A car saves time for families with gear, guests staying in Kościelisko or Bukowina, and travelers combining the Polish and Slovak sides. Winter driving requires confidence and verified winter tires; in central Zakopane, parking and congestion can make a car more burden than benefit.
Tips
Bolt works well in Zakopane, but availability drops and fares rise at busy times; outside town, keep the number of a local taxi company. Parking at Palenica Białczańska for Morskie Oko should be reserved online through the national park, as it fills early in summer and on weekends.
