Stari Grad, Belgrade
This is the easiest base for a first visit: pedestrian Knez Mihailova, Kalemegdan Fortress, Republic Square and the restaurants of Skadarlija are all walkable. Prices are relatively high, and rooms around Republic Square and Skadarlija can be noisy on weekends.
Savamala and Dorćol, Belgrade
In Dorćol, cafés cluster around Strahinjića Bana, Bajloni Market and the Danube promenade; in Savamala, evenings revolve around Beton Hala and the Sava riverfront. Zlatibor

It is a convenient base for Stopića Cave, Sirogojno open-air museum and Gostilje Waterfall, with plenty of promenade activities for children. Kopaonik
In winter this is Serbia’s main ski resort, and the most convenient base is Konaci or near Grand Kopaonik for walking access to the Karaman Greben and Pančić Express lifts. Viceroy Kopaonik Serbia delivers a luxury ski-and-spa stay, while apartments outside the center cost less. Remote lodging requires a shuttle or a car on snowy roads, and ski-season prices rise sharply while parking becomes scarce.

West to Zlatibor
Collect a car early and drive west; en route, stop at Mokra Gora for the Šargan Eight heritage railway, reserving seats ahead in season. Continue to the wooden village of Drvengrad and Tara Mountain viewpoints, then reach Zlatibor in the afternoon. Ride the Gold Gondola toward Tornik if weather allows, and walk around the lake and Kraljev Trg in the evening. Families are better off sleeping centrally so they do not need to drive again at night.

Stopića Cave, Sirogojno and Gostilje
Reach Stopića Cave near opening time, before tour groups, and walk among its limestone pools and vast chamber. Eat a picnic prepared in Zlatibor, then begin the long drive to Belgrade with a generous allowance for traffic. If your flight is early, spend the final night in Belgrade or near the airport rather than driving directly from Uvac.

From the airport

The A1 minibus reaches Slavija Square in roughly 30 to 45 minutes for about ₪12-15, while bus 72 reaches Zeleni Venac in 40 to 60 minutes for about ₪2-5. There is no direct train from the terminal; for Novi Sad, connect to the fast train in the city or prebook a private airport transfer for about ₪240-380 per vehicle.
Need a car?
You do not need a car for Belgrade or Novi Sad: both centers are walkable, public transport is adequate and taxis are inexpensive, while central parking is a nuisance. For families or couples combining Zlatibor, Tara, Uvac, the Fruška Gora monasteries or Kopaonik, a rental car saves time and reaches viewpoints poorly served by public transport. Young travelers on a city break should skip it; in winter, use a car with winter tires and chains for Kopaonik or book a transfer.
Tips
Use CarGo or Yandex Go to see the fare and route in advance, and avoid unmarked taxis outside the airport or bus station. Central Belgrade has time-limited parking zones, so a garage such as Obilićev Venac is easier; ask the rental company how to pay without a Serbian phone number. Soko trains between Beograd Centar and Novi Sad are much faster than buses, and seats should be booked ahead on weekends and during EXIT.
