Overview

🇵🇱Kudowa-Zdrój

🇵🇱Poland

Kudowa-Zdrój is a leafy spa town at the foot of the Table Mountains, ideal for families, couples and travelers who prefer trails and scenery to another urban break. Start with mineral-water tasting at Pijalnia Wód Mineralnych and a stroll through Park Zdrojowy, then explore the Błędne Skały rock labyrinth and the viewpoints of Szczeliniec Wielki. The Skull Chapel in Czermna is an unusual essential stop, while nearby Náchod makes an easy Czech day trip. Israeli travelers typically fly into Wrocław and rent a car, making the town an excellent base within a southwest Poland nature itinerary.

Where to stay

Where to stay in Kudowa-Zdrój

Each area and who it suits best.

Central Kudowa and the Promenade

Great for: Families, couples, and travelers who prefer not to drive

The most convenient area runs along ul. Zdrojowa, Park Zdrojowy, and the Pijalnia Wód Mineralnych pump room, with cafés, restaurants, and summer performances within walking distance. Hotel Verde Montana Wellness & Spa is especially popular with families for its water complex, while Hotel Kudowa Manufaktura Relaksu sits close to the center. Rates are slightly higher and the promenade gets busy on weekends, but this is the easiest base for a first visit.

Czermna

Great for: Families, budget travelers, and local-attraction seekers

This district north of the center is known for Kaplica Czaszek, the Skull Chapel on Stanisława Moniuszki Street, and the traditional crafts at Szlak Ginących Zawodów. Guesthouses are simpler and cheaper, often with gardens, quiet surroundings, and parking. The trade-off is a 25 to 35-minute walk to the spa park and very limited evening entertainment.

Zakrze and the Czech Border

Great for: Younger travelers, budget travelers, and those planning Czech day trips

Southern Kudowa, around ul. Główna and Kudowa-Zdrój railway station, is practical for public-transport arrivals and travelers who want to walk across the border toward Náchod. Apartments and rooms tend to cost less, with convenient supermarket access, although there is no real nightlife scene. It is less picturesque than the spa park, and some properties suffer from traffic noise along the main road.

Brzozowie

Great for: Couples, nature lovers, and travelers with a car

Brzozowie is a wooded, rural district west of town, centered on ul. Brzozowie near the Czech border, with guesthouses, trails, and green Table Mountains scenery. It suits couples who prefer quiet mornings and a balcony over a busy promenade. A car is effectively required for meals and sightseeing, with central Kudowa about a 10-minute drive away.

Karłów

Great for: Active families, hikers, and nature lovers

Karłów lies about 12 kilometers from Kudowa, directly below Szczeliniec Wielki on the scenic Droga Stu Zakrętów road. Guesthouses such as Zajazd Karłów place you close to the trailhead, a major advantage if you want to start before 08:00 and beat the tour groups. It becomes very quiet after hikers leave, but lacks Kudowa's spa facilities, shopping, and restaurant choice.

Polanica-Zdrój

Great for: Couples, luxury spa travelers, and those wanting more evening dining

Polanica sits about a 25-minute drive from Kudowa and offers a more polished alternative around Park Zdrojowy and pedestrianized ul. Zdrojowa. Spa Dr Irena Eris Polanica Zdrój is the region's standout luxury retreat, with an upscale spa and strong dining. It is pricier and farther away, so it is less convenient if most of your plans center on Kudowa, Czermna, and the Czech border.

Suggested plan

A perfect Kudowa-Zdrój itinerary

Day by day, so you can picture the whole trip.

  1. 1

    Day 1

Spa Park at an Easy Pace

After checking in, walk through Park Zdrojowy, enter the Pijalnia Wód Mineralnych to sample the spring waters, and see the Pod Blachą concert hall. Continue along ul. Zdrojowa toward the cafés and musical garden, then book a spa treatment or spend a few hours at the Aqua Park Wodny Świat inside Verde Montana. Dine in the center or cook at your apartment; Kudowa is a quiet spa town rather than a club destination, making this the right evening to slow down.

  2. 2

    Day 2

    Czermna, Skulls, and Old Crafts

Reach Kaplica Czaszek near opening time, before day groups crowd its tiny interior, and allow time for St. Bartholomew's Church and the cemetery. Continue to Szlak Ginących Zawodów, where pottery, a windmill, and disappearing rural crafts make an engaging family stop. Return to the center for a light lunch around ul. Zdrojowa, then visit Muzeum Zabawek, the Toy Museum, in the afternoon. Finish with an illuminated evening walk through the spa park.

  3. 3

    Day 3

    Szczeliniec Summit and Karłów

Reach Karłów by 08:00 and climb the steps to Szczeliniec Wielki, the highest summit in the Table Mountains, before the summer crowds. The route winds among imaginative rock formations, viewpoints, and narrow passages; allow about three hours and bring hiking shoes, water, and a warm layer. Have lunch at one of Karłów's inns, choosing only what meets your dietary requirements, or bring a picnic. On the return journey, stop at a viewpoint along Droga Stu Zakrętów, but only in a designated pullout.

  4. 4

    Day 4

    The Błędne Skały Rock Labyrinth

Reserve a timed entry to Błędne Skały in advance and choose the first morning slot, when its narrow passages are not yet congested. Follow the one-way trail between stone walls, avoiding a large backpack because several sections require squeezing through and crouching. Afterwards, drive toward the Pasterka viewpoint or have a picnic at an authorized spot on the edge of the national park. Return to Kudowa in the early afternoon for a spa treatment, pool session, or coffee overlooking Park Zdrojowy.

  5. 5

    Day 5

    Kłodzko Fortress and Polanica

Drive to Kłodzko in the morning and visit Twierdza Kłodzko; if the underground route is operating, join a tour and carry a warm layer even in summer. Descend into the old town, cross the Gothic Most św. Jana, and explore Bolesława Chrobrego Square. In the afternoon, continue to Polanica-Zdrój for a walk through Park Zdrojowy and pedestrianized ul. Zdrojowa, stopping for coffee. Return to Kudowa before dark, particularly in foggy weather.

  6. 6

    Day 6

    Náchod and the Czech Border

Cross into Czechia and drive about 15 minutes to Náchod, or include a border-area walk if staying in Zakrze. Begin at Náchodský zámek when it opens, stroll around Masarykovo náměstí, and climb to a viewpoint over the town and valley. At lunch, choose simple vegetarian food only if it meets your kosher standard, or eat a picnic prepared in Kudowa. Return in the afternoon for final shopping in central Kudowa and a relaxed sunset in the spa park; carry your passport even when traveling within the Schengen Area.

Getting around

From the airport

Wrocław is the most convenient airport, roughly 125 kilometers away: a rental car or private transfer takes about two hours and costs around ₪430–650 per vehicle. By public transport, take bus 106 or a taxi to Wrocław Główny, then a train to Kudowa, sometimes changing in Kłodzko; allow 3.5–5 hours and ₪45–90 per person in total. A Bolt or Uber from Wrocław may cost about ₪400–600, although drivers do not always accept such a long intercity trip. Prague is a reasonable alternative when fares are attractive: a shuttle or car via Náchod takes around 2.5–3 hours and generally costs ₪550–850 per vehicle.

Need a car?

For a weekend focused on the spa park, Skull Chapel, and town center, a car is unnecessary; trains and local taxis are sufficient. Families and hikers combining Szczeliniec Wielki, Błędne Skały, Polanica, Kłodzko, or Náchod save considerable time with a rental car, which is strongly recommended. A couple focused on spa time and walks can manage without one, but staying in Brzozowie or Karłów effectively requires a car.

Rent a car in Kudowa-Zdrój

Tips

Bolt works well in Wrocław, but availability in Kudowa itself is limited, so ask your hotel to call a taxi and keep the driver's number for the return. Droga Stu Zakrętów is extremely narrow and winding; drive in daylight and do not rely on continuous mobile reception inside the national park. In summer, parking at Błędne Skały is regulated and may require an advance timed reservation, while arriving in Karłów before 08:30 gives you a better chance of parking near the trail.

Kosher & Jewish

Chabad / community

There is no Chabad House, active synagogue, or regular minyan in Kudowa-Zdrój, nor in nearby Karłów or Polanica. The nearest practical Chabad presence for travelers is in central Wrocław, and visitors should contact it in advance regarding services, Shabbat meals, and packaged food. Observant travelers should not assume they can arrange a minyan or kosher meal after reaching Kudowa.

Kosher food

Kudowa has no certified kosher restaurant, so local restaurants, even when serving vegetarian dishes, are not a kosher solution. Kosher-observant Israelis stock up in Wrocław or bring supplies from Israel and book an apartment with a kitchen; local Biedronka, Lidl, and Dino branches are useful for fruit, vegetables, eggs, sealed fish, and packaged goods after checking certification. For Shabbat, arrange food with Chabad Wrocław in advance and bring warming equipment only with the accommodation's approval.

Local tips

Good to know about Kudowa-Zdrój

  • 💳Pay in złoty and always select PLN on the card terminal; once you cross into Náchod you will need CZK, while in Kudowa-Zdrój cards are accepted almost everywhere except some stalls, public parking machines and toilets.
  • 🚗The easiest option for Israelis is a rental car from Wrocław or Prague, and in summer you should leave for Karłów before 8:00 because the Szczeliniec Wielki car parks fill quickly.
  • 🛏️Without a car, stay around Zdrojowa and Park Zdrojowy; families with a car who value quiet and parking will usually be more comfortable in Czermna or on the streets above the park.
  • 🎟️In summer and on weekends, reserve a timed entry for Błędne Skały and check tour hours at Kaplica Czaszek, where admission is handled in groups and waits can become lengthy.
  • 🥾Even on a warm day, bring grippy walking shoes and a light rain jacket to Park Narodowy Gór Stołowych, as the Szczeliniec steps can be wet and slippery and the rock corridors are cooler than town.
  • 🍽️Kudowa has no permanent kosher restaurant, so kosher-observant travelers should stock up in Wrocław or Prague and coordinate their needs with Chabad there; in town, Biedronka is useful for sealed products bearing a recognized kosher certification.
  • 🍷Leave about 10% in restaurants for good service and state the total before paying cash, since saying dziękuję while handing over the note may be understood as letting the server keep the change.
  • 🎰Kudowa is not a nightlife destination, and if you cross into Náchod for a casino, carry your passport and check opening hours and entry rules in advance; do not rely on late public transport or drive after drinking.
  • 📱A European eSIM generally works well in town, but download offline maps of Kudowa-Zdrój and Góry Stołowe in advance because reception weakens between the cliffs and near the border.
  • 🛡️Kudowa is very safe, but do not leave passports, shopping bags or luggage visible in your car at the Karłów and Błędne Skały parking areas, particularly during the busy summer season.

"Kudowa-Zdrój feels like Poland at a gentler pace: a green, orderly spa town that sits only minutes from the dramatic landscapes of the Table Mountains. Israelis tend to fall for the walk among the rock formations of Szczeliniec Wielki, followed by a glass of mineral water inside Pijalnia Wód Mineralnych and an unhurried stroll through Park Zdrojowy. My favorite moment comes near sunset, when I walk through the forest to Altana Miłości and watch the town’s red roofs and valley open below. This is not a town of flashy attractions, but a place that gives couples and families a genuine day of nature, fresh air and time together."

Loves

My local secret is the short climb to Altana Miłości on Góra Parkowa, ideally about an hour before sunset, after most day visitors have left the park. Pick up a coffee in the center, follow the woodland path without rushing, and you will find an intimate viewpoint that is usually far calmer than Szczeliniec Wielki.

Skip

I would not waste half a day at the Słone border market simply because someone said it was cheap; many stalls repeat the same clothing, cigarettes and uneven-quality souvenirs. If you do visit, compare prices, pay in Polish złoty and do not let the market replace the nature you actually came for.

Boutique pick

I begin at 8:00 with a drive to Karłów and an early ascent of Szczeliniec Wielki, before the tour buses and congestion on its narrow stairs; at around 11:30, I continue to the stone labyrinths of Błędne Skały. In the afternoon we return to Kudowa, visit Kaplica Czaszek in Czermna, taste the spring waters at Pijalnia Wód Mineralnych and slow down in Park Zdrojowy. At 18:30, I finish with a walk to Altana Miłości and a relaxed dinner near Zdrojowa Street, without chasing one more attraction.

Kudowa-Zdrój suits nature-loving families and couples seeking spa time and a relaxed pace, rather than travelers focused on parties; pack layers, a rain jacket and walking shoes, and combine it with Prague, Wrocław or the Czech rock town of Adršpach.
