This is the Moroccan heart most Israelis picture: a riad down a narrow lane, within walking distance of the souks, Bahia Palace and Jemaa el-Fna. Riads such as Riad Kheirredine and La Sultana Marrakech provide an intimate experience, but taxis cannot always reach the door, the alleys are confusing and the square area stays noisy late.
Gueliz
Marrakech's modern, convenient district has cafés along Avenue Mohammed V, shopping at Carré Eden and restaurants and bars around Rue de la Liberté. Hotels such as 2Ciels Boutique Hôtel offer a pool and easy taxi access at relatively comfortable prices. The trade-off is less riad atmosphere, while the Medina is about a 10-minute drive or 30-minute walk away.
Hivernage
Wide boulevards, gardens and luxury hotels line Avenue Mohammed VI, including Four Seasons Resort Marrakech and Sofitel Marrakech. Evenings revolve around Theatro Marrakech or Le Grand Casino de La Mamounia, while Menara Gardens are nearby by day. Prices are high, the atmosphere feels less local and Jemaa el-Fna is about a 25-minute walk away.
Agdal
South of the Medina along Avenue Mohammed VI are large resorts with pools, kids' clubs and spacious rooms, including Kenzi Club Agdal Medina and Palm Plaza. It suits families wanting relaxed hotel days with evening trips into town. The trade-off is taxi dependence, little street life and a roughly 15-minute ride to Jemaa el-Fna without traffic.
Palmeraie
Palm groves, villas and garden resorts such as Barceló Palmeraie and Hôtel du Golf Rotana create an out-of-town resort feel. It is ideal for camel rides, quad biking and pool time away from the souk's bustle. In return, expect 20 to 30-minute rides into the Medina and mounting taxi costs unless the hotel provides a shuttle.
Route de l’Ourika and Tassoultante
South of town, boutique hotels and estates sit among gardens with open Atlas views, including Beldi Country Club and Selman Marrakech. The area is excellent for honeymoons, spa treatments and slow pool days. Almost nothing is walkable, and trips to the Medina take 20 to 35 minutes and cost more than a standard city taxi.

Getting around
From the airport
Marrakech Menara Airport is close to town: an official taxi to the Medina, Gueliz or Hivernage takes 10 to 20 minutes and usually costs ₪30-60; use the taxi desk or agree on the fare first. A private transfer booked through a riad costs roughly ₪60-110 and is especially useful for Medina stays because the driver can coordinate a meeting point and porter. Alsa bus 19 reaches Jemaa el-Fna and Gueliz in around 20 to 30 minutes for approximately ₪12-16; regular city buses are cheaper but awkward with luggage. There is no airport train, and apps such as inDrive may work, although terminal pickups are not always smooth.
Need a car?
You do not need a car within Marrakech: the Medina is made for walking, and petit taxis are easier between Gueliz, Hivernage and the old city. For families at a resort or travelers heading to the Ourika Valley, Ifrane or Agadir, a driver with a car is generally easier than renting because of dense traffic, scooters, parking and signage. A rental car makes sense mainly for a multi-day independent road trip, not a short city break.
Tips
In a petit taxi, request the meter or settle the fare before entering; prices rise at night and around Jemaa el-Fna, where bargaining is often necessary. inDrive lets riders propose a fare, though pickup may need to be outside hotel and taxi-controlled zones. Do not attempt to drive into the Medina: many alleys are one-way or closed, with useful parking near Koutoubia, Bab Doukkala and Bab Ghmat.

Chabad / community
Chabad Marrakech operates in the Gueliz area, close to the central streets where many Israelis stay, and arranges prayers and Shabbat meals with advance registration. The Mellah contains Slat Al Azama Synagogue and the Jewish cemetery, but these are community and heritage sites rather than substitutes for an active Chabad center. Confirm minyan times, security procedures, the meal address and packaged-food availability in advance, especially on weekdays.
Kosher food
Dar Ima, associated with Chabad in Gueliz, is the principal kosher address for Moroccan and Israeli food, but opening times and reservations vary, so coordinate before going. Carrefour branches at Carré Eden and Al Mazar sometimes stock imported products carrying kosher certification, but there is no reliable selection of kosher meat or prepared meals.
