Overview
🇮🇹Florence
🇮🇹Italy
Florence is an elegant, romantic city break in the heart of Tuscany, ideal for couples, art lovers, foodies and stylish shoppers. Israeli travelers come to see Michelangelo's David at the Accademia, admire the Duomo, cross Ponte Vecchio and watch sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo. Between San Lorenzo Market and the boutiques of Via de' Tornabuoni, it is also a superb base for a day among Chianti's wineries and villages.

Where to stay
Where to stay in Florence
Each area and who it suits best.
Duomo and the Historic Center
Step outside straight into the Duomo, elegant streets and gelaterias, with crowds and noise as the trade-off.
Santa Maria Novella
A practical base by the main station, within a short walk of the Duomo and convenient trains to Pisa, Lucca and Bologna.
Santa Croce and Sant’Ambrogio
Lively neighborhoods with aperitivo, animated squares and Sant’Ambrogio Market, close to the sights but less polished than the Duomo area.
Oltrarno and Santo Spirito
Across the river, artisan workshops, wine bars and Piazza Santo Spirito create a Florentine atmosphere that feels less like an open-air museum.
San Niccolò and Piazzale Michelangelo
Quiet streets below the hill, gardens and superb sunset views, though returning to the hotel can involve a steep climb.

Day 1
The Duomo and Florence's Heart
Begin at Piazza del Duomo, visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, and climb Brunelleschi's Dome or Giotto's Bell Tower with an advance reservation. Continue through Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio and the sculptures of the Loggia dei Lanzi, then finish with the last light over Ponte Vecchio.
- 2
Day 2
Uffizi and Oltrarno
Spend the morning at the Uffizi Gallery with works by Botticelli, Leonardo and Raphael, using an early timed ticket to minimize queues. Cross Ponte Vecchio into Oltrarno, visit Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens, and finish with aperitivo in Piazza Santo Spirito.
- 3
Day 3
David, Markets and Jewish Florence
Start at the Accademia Gallery with Michelangelo's David, then continue through the Basilica of San Lorenzo and San Lorenzo Market for leather goods and souvenirs, checking quality before buying. In the afternoon, explore Sant’Ambrogio Market and visit the Great Synagogue and Jewish Museum, subject to opening hours and security procedures.
- 4
Day 4
Santa Croce and a Hilltop Sunset
Visit the Basilica of Santa Croce, burial place of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli, then wander through the streets and workshops of San Niccolò. Toward evening, climb to Piazzale Michelangelo and continue to the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte for the city's finest sunset panorama.
- 5
Day 5
A Tuscan Day Trip
Take a direct bus to Siena or join a tour combining Siena, San Gimignano and the Chianti landscapes, a convenient choice if you prefer not to manage driving and parking. If renting a car, choose only two stops, such as Greve in Chianti and San Gimignano, leaving time for the country roads and viewpoints.

Getting around
From the airport
From Florence Peretola Airport, take tram T2 to Unità in the center: about 20 minutes and roughly ₪7 per person. A fixed-fare taxi to central Florence generally costs around ₪95-125 after common luggage or time supplements and takes about 15-25 minutes depending on traffic. Israelis landing in Pisa can reach Santa Maria Novella by train, or the People Mover plus train, in about 75-100 minutes for roughly ₪55-80.
Need a car?
No, not within Florence. The center is compact, most sights are walkable, and camera-controlled ZTL zones make fines and expensive parking a real risk. Rent a car only for a Tuscan road trip, ideally collecting it on the day you leave the city.
Tips
Book taxis through Taxi Move or appTaxi, as street hailing is not always practical. Reserve timed entry for the Uffizi and Accademia in advance, and favor walking over buses within the historic center.
Kosher & Jewish
Chabad / community
Chabad of Florence operates in the historic-center area and hosts prayers and Shabbat or holiday meals with advance registration. Florence's Jewish community is centered around the Great Synagogue on Via Luigi Carlo Farini near Sant’Ambrogio; check prayer times, security procedures and ID requirements in advance.
Kosher food
Florence's kosher selection is limited and can change, but kosher restaurants or food outlets periodically operate near the synagogue, including the community-adjacent kosher Ruth's. Observant travelers commonly reserve Chabad Shabbat meals ahead, buy sealed products in supermarkets and choose an apartment with a kitchenette; do not assume a vegetarian restaurant is kosher without certification and supervision.

Local tips
Good to know about Florence
- 🚫Do not drive into the historic center unless a garage has registered your license plate, as ZTL cameras issue automatic fines that may reach you in Israel months later.
- 🎟️Book timed admission for the Duomo’s dome and the Uffizi Gallery at least two weeks ahead, and even earlier around Passover, Sukkot and July through August.
- 🛏️For a first visit, stay in Santa Croce or on the quieter edge of Santa Maria Novella, while Santo Spirito suits travelers who prefer bars, restaurants and a more local evening atmosphere.
- 🚋From Florence Airport, take tram line T2 to Santa Maria Novella, a journey of about 20 minutes costing roughly ₪7, rather than an expensive taxi into the center.
- ✡️Kosher-observant travelers should contact Chabad Florence in advance about meals and Shabbat arrangements, and carry backup food because the city’s kosher selection is limited.
- 🎒Around Santa Maria Novella station, San Lorenzo Market and Ponte Vecchio, keep phones and wallets in a front pocket or closed bag, especially in crowded periods.

"Florence feels like a museum people actually live in, yet it is compact, welcoming and far less exhausting than other major art cities. Israelis tend to fall for it while walking from the stone lanes of Oltrarno to sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo, when the Duomo turns golden."
Loves
My little secret is to visit the Rose Garden about an hour before sunset, then continue uphill to the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte above Piazzale Michelangelo. The view is wider and quieter there, and most Israeli groups never make it that far.
Skip
I avoid restaurants with photo menus directly facing the Duomo, where you usually pay for the view and receive mediocre food and rushed service.
Boutique pick
I start early with the climb up Brunelleschi’s Dome, continue through Sant’Ambrogio Market and the artisan workshops of Oltrarno, then stop for coffee standing at the counter like a local. Toward evening, I walk through the Rose Garden to San Miniato al Monte and save dinner for the lively Santo Spirito area.

Common questions about Florence

When is the best time to fly to Florence?
The best times to visit Florence are April through June and September through October, when the weather is pleasant and crowds are lighter than in July and August.
How many days do you need in Florence?

Are there direct flights from Tel Aviv to Florence, and how long is the flight?

How do you get around Florence, and is a rental car necessary?
Central Florence is best explored on foot, the airport tram is convenient, and a rental car is worthwhile only for Tuscany because of restricted ZTL zones and costly parking.
How much does a Florence vacation cost, and is the city safe?

Florence has no seaside beach, but families enjoy the Boboli Gardens and Leonardo da Vinci Museum, while couples love sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo and a walk across Ponte Vecchio.
What is Florence nightlife like, and is kosher food available?
