Murat, Central Bari

Bari Vecchia
Stay inside the maze of stone lanes between the Basilica of San Nicola, San Sabino Cathedral and Castello Svevo, near Arco Basso where local women make orecchiette in their doorways. Palazzo Calò and the area's boutique apartments offer character, but parking is scarce, luggage must cross cobbles and the little squares stay lively late.
Madonnella and the Lungomare
The neighborhood follows Lungomare Nazario Sauro toward Pane e Pomodoro beach, offering morning runs, sunsets and views across the old fishing harbor. iH Hotels Bari Grande Albergo delle Nazioni is the standout upscale stay; the trade-offs are a fairly basic city beach, traffic on the seafront road and higher prices for sea-view rooms.
Poggiofranco
This modern residential district has restaurants around Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII, relatively easy parking and hotels such as The Nicolaus Hotel and Hi Hotel Bari. Rooms are larger and pools more attainable than in the old town, but evenings lack Bari Vecchia's charm and reaching the center takes roughly 15 to 25 minutes.
Polignano a Mare
About 35 minutes from Bari by train, the town offers cliff-top terraces and the Lama Monachile cove, with distinctive stays at Grotta Palazzese or boutique hotels in the old center. It is superb for summer evenings and boat trips, but the beach is extremely crowded in July and August, parking is difficult and prices are markedly higher than Bari.
Monopoli
This attractive whitewashed port town centers on Porto Antico and Cala Porta Vecchia, with easy access to Capitolo's beach clubs and hotels such as Don Ferrante. It is calmer and more family-friendly than Polignano and a good base for Valle d'Itria, but lies around 45 minutes from Bari and its nightlife is seasonal and spread along the coast.

From the airport
From Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport, the Ferrotramviaria train reaches Bari Centrale in about 17 minutes for roughly ₪22 per person; a covered walkway links the terminal to the station. AMTAB bus 16 is cheaper at around ₪5–7 but takes 40–60 minutes, while the Tempesta shuttle costs about ₪20–25 and takes around 30 minutes. An official taxi to Murat or Bari Vecchia generally costs ₪95–120 and takes 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic. Uber is not a consistently cheap alternative here, and the app usually offers licensed taxis or higher-priced Uber Black service.
Need a car?
A car is unnecessary if the trip focuses on Bari, Polignano and Monopoli: trains are frequent and historic centers work better on foot. Families planning Alberobello, Locorotondo, Ostuni, Matera or Capitolo's beaches will benefit greatly from hiring one for two or three days. Do not keep it for the full stay when sleeping in Bari Vecchia, where the ZTL, narrow streets and parking make it a burden.
Tips
For taxis, use Radio Taxi Bari or ask the hotel; do not count on hailing one inside the old town's lanes. Bari, Polignano and Monopoli have camera-controlled ZTL zones, so park in a regulated lot outside the center and ensure your hotel registers the license plate if guest access is permitted. Buy regional rail tickets through Trenitalia and validate paper tickets before boarding; in summer, reserve Polignano boat tours and beach parking ahead.
