Overview
🇮🇹Amalfi Coast
🇮🇹Italy
The Amalfi Coast is Italy at its most photogenic, with colorful villages clinging to cliffs, winding coastal roads and sunset limoncello overlooking the sea. Israeli travelers come mainly in spring and summer to stay in Positano, Amalfi or Ravello, sail to Capri, swim at Marina Grande and hike the Path of the Gods. It is a romantic, upscale destination that also pairs beautifully with Naples, Pompeii and Sorrento.

Suggested plan
A perfect Amalfi Coast itinerary
Day by day, so you can picture the whole trip.
- 1
Day 1
Positano from the Sea
Arrive by ferry for the finest view of the colorful hillside, then walk from Spiaggia Grande through the lanes and boutiques to the viewpoints around Santa Maria Assunta. Spend the afternoon at quieter Fornillo Beach and finish with sunset over the bay.
- 2
Day 2
Amalfi and Atrani
Begin at the Duomo di Sant'Andrea and the Cloister of Paradise, then explore the main street and walk into the valley for the Paper Museum. Continue through the pedestrian passages to tiny Atrani, pause in Piazza Umberto I, and swim at its compact beach.
- 3
Day 3
Ravello's Gardens
Travel uphill from Amalfi to Ravello and visit Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone's Terrace of Infinity, two of the coast's finest viewpoints. Have a light lunch around Piazza Duomo, and book ahead if a Ravello Festival concert is scheduled.
- 4
Day 4
Path of the Gods and Praiano
Start early on the Sentiero degli Dei from Bomerano toward Nocelle, a roughly 7-kilometer trail of cliffs and expansive sea views; summer requires water, a hat, and proper shoes. Descend toward Positano or continue to Praiano, then spend the afternoon at Marina di Praia or the Fiordo di Furore viewpoint.
- 5
Day 5
Capri and Anacapri
Take a morning ferry from Sorrento, Positano, or Amalfi to Capri and head straight to Anacapri before the crowds build. Visit Villa San Michele or ride the chairlift to Monte Solaro, then return to Capri town, the Gardens of Augustus, and the Faraglioni viewpoint before the final ferry.

Getting around
From the airport
From Naples Airport, the easiest option is a private driver: about 1 hour 20 minutes to Sorrento and roughly 2 hours to Positano or Amalfi, usually ₪450-750 per car depending on destination and traffic. On a budget, take the Alibus to Naples, continue on the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento, then use a SITA bus or seasonal ferry; the full journey costs about ₪70-130 per person and takes 2.5-4 hours.
Need a car?
Usually no, especially from June through September. The SS163 is narrow, congested, and winding, while parking is scarce and can cost ₪120-200 per day; staying in Amalfi, Positano, or Sorrento makes ferries and buses practical. A small car can help off-season or when staying in a hill village.
Tips
In summer, favor ferries between Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi: they are fast, scenic, and avoid traffic, although rough seas can cause cancellations. Buy SITA bus tickets in advance at a tabacchi, and arrive early at popular stops because full buses may simply pass by.
Kosher & Jewish
Chabad / community
There is no permanent Chabad house or established kosher infrastructure in the Amalfi Coast towns. The nearest practical Chabad is in Naples, generally offering prayers, Shabbat meals, and traveler services by advance arrangement; it is not an easy Shabbat trip from Sorrento or Positano, so observant travelers often add a night in Naples or bring sealed food. Naples also has a Jewish community and synagogue, and all schedules and services should be confirmed before travel.
Kosher food
There are no permanent kosher restaurants along the coast. Strictly kosher travelers bring sealed products from Naples or Israel and choose an apartment with a kitchenette; supermarkets readily stock fruit, vegetables, dried pasta, rice, and packaged products bearing suitable certification. Those comfortable with kosher-friendly but uncertified options can ask for pizza marinara, Caprese salad, vegetable dishes, and simple pasta, while checking ovens, utensils, and sauces.

Local tips
Good to know about Amalfi Coast
- ✈️The easiest arrival from Israel is a seasonal nonstop flight to Naples when available, followed by a prebooked transfer to the coast, typically costing about ₪350–₪650 per car depending on the town and season.
- ⛴️From May to October, favor ferries between Salerno, Amalfi and Positano over buses, but leave extra time because sailings can be canceled when sea conditions deteriorate.
- 🏨Positano suits couples who want to be at the center of the action, while families and Israelis seeking an easier beach, gentler prices and simpler transport will do better in Maiori or Salerno.
- 🏖️In July and August, reserve sunbeds at beaches such as Arienzo or Lido degli Artisti at least two to three weeks ahead, as small beaches and popular beach clubs fill quickly.
- 🚌Buy SITA bus tickets in advance at tobacco shops or authorized vendors rather than relying on the driver, and in summer board at the route’s starting stop to avoid a long ride standing.
- ✡️The Amalfi Coast has no permanent kosher infrastructure, so kosher-observant travelers should stock up in Naples, check options with Chabad Naples in advance and book a room with a kitchenette rather than relying on local restaurants.

"The Amalfi Coast feels like a place where every bend reveals another postcard: dramatic cliffs, colorful houses and deep-blue water. Israelis fall for its mix of beach time and elegant Italian atmosphere, especially when arriving by boat at Arienzo Beach beneath Positano."
Loves
I love walking the Path of Lemons between Maiori and Minori early, before the heat builds, then finishing with a cold lemon granita by the sea. The views are wonderful, the atmosphere feels far more local than Positano, and there are far fewer tour groups.
Skip
The mistake I see repeatedly is renting a car in peak summer without reserved parking, then wasting hours in traffic and paying hundreds of shekels for garages.
Boutique pick
I start the day on a small private boat from Positano, stopping to swim near Fiordo di Furore and Conca dei Marini, then continue to Nerano for a relaxed lunch featuring its famous vegetarian pasta alla Nerano. In the afternoon, we head up to Ravello, walk through the gardens of Villa Cimbrone and finish with an aperitivo near the Terrace of Infinity.
