You can reach the attractions before the tour buses, and the airport is exceptionally close. The trade-offs are steep December rates, a highly commercial atmosphere and very little evening life once the complex closes.
Apukka
Apukka Resort lies roughly 16 kilometers northeast of downtown by Lake Olkkajärvi, known for glass cabins, saunas and direct departures for husky, snowmobile and aurora safaris. It is the most photogenic and romantic option, especially for one or two nights at the end of a trip. You pay heavily for the isolation, depend on resort dining and transfers, and downtown is nowhere near walking distance.
Sinettä
Sinettä village is about 30 kilometers northwest of Rovaniemi, near Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos, forests and dark lakes that are far better for aurora viewing than downtown. This is the quiet, snowy, sauna-centered version of Lapland, without commercial lights outside the door. The price is a roughly 30-minute trip into town, few local services and dependence on a car or prebooked transfers.
Saarenkylä
Saarenkylä is a residential district across the river and on the route toward Santa Claus Village, with supermarkets, apartments and houses that let families cook and save. Jätkänkynttilä Bridge and downtown are a short drive away, while the airport and Arctic Circle are easily reached. There is no nightlife or resort atmosphere, and the spread-out accommodation makes a car close to essential.

RVN airport is about 3 kilometers from Santa Claus Village and 9 kilometers from central Rovaniemi.
