Overview

🇧🇬Varna

🇧🇬Bulgaria

Varna is the queen of the Black Sea coast — a lively port city with golden sandy beaches, a vast sea garden stretching along the promenade, and a buzzing city center packed with taverns, rooftop bars and art spaces. In the Bulgarian summer heat, it delivers crystal-clear water, remarkably wallet-friendly prices for Israeli travelers, and a Mediterranean vibe at the heart of Eastern Europe. From the Archaeological Museum's jaw-dropping prehistoric gold to the beach-club nights at nearby Golden Sands, Varna is a genuinely rewarding surprise.

Local tips

Good to know about Varna

  • 🚌Bus line 409 connects central Varna to the northern Golden Sands beach in 35 minutes for 2 lev (~₪4) — skip the taxis waiting outside the train station that charge ten times as much.
  • 🦞Varna's fish market (Riben Pazar) is open every morning until 10:00. Buy fresh mussels there, and a few meters away a street stall will cook them in butter and lemon on the spot in 3 minutes. A maritime breakfast for 8 lev (~₪15).
  • 🏛️Varna Archaeological Museum holds the world's oldest gold jewelry collection (4,600 BCE). Admission is 10 lev (~₪19), and on Tuesday afternoons it's almost empty. Don't miss the treasure room on the second floor.
  • 🌅Sea Garden (Morska Gradina) connects directly to the promenade — arrive at dusk as the sun sets behind the dolphinarium. Entry is free, the atmosphere is stunning, and there is zero reason to pay the 'sunset experience' organizers who package this as a paid event.

"Varna is not just a beach — it's a city with layers. Anyone who comes for a few days and stays only on the Golden Sands strip misses a real Bulgarian port city, chef restaurants that have emerged in the last five years, and an old quarter that is waking up. I work here so my clients see both."

Loves

There's a place I return to on every visit: Bistro 13 on Dragoman Street 13 in the center. The Bulgarian chef came back from Barcelona and the menu changes every week. His beet tartare with goat cheese and walnuts is one of the best things I've eaten on the Balkan Peninsula. An evening table needs to be booked a week in advance.

Skip

The fish restaurants along the main Golden Sands promenade strip — the ones with touts outside and menus in seven languages. Prices are three times higher than in the city, the fish is frozen, and no local eats there. I redirect every one of my clients away from this trap on day one.

Boutique pick

I build it as a 2-night itinerary: Day one starts at the fish market at 8:30, continues with a walking tour of 3 central neighborhoods including the Russian Cathedral and the Horshtians Quarter, lunch at a local wine cellar, afternoon at the Archaeological Museum, and evening at the chef's restaurant. Day two — rent e-bikes (35 lev/day), ride along the coast to the fishing village of Balchik, swim in the open sea and not in the ultra-commercial pool, return at sunset. An experience like this costs around ₪800 for a couple for two days including food — no spa traps and no empty packages.

Client stories

What returning travelers say about Varna

"We flew to Varna without great expectations since everyone told us 'great beach.' But the walking tour Maya built for us in the center is what transformed the trip. The food at Bistro 13 was incredible, the sea in September was completely empty, and the total cost was less than a week in Caesarea. We'll be back."

Roi and Efrat Levi, Tel Aviv

4 nights, September 2024, couple

"I arrived with a friend for a girls' vacation and Maya surprised us with an e-bike day to Balchik. The small town with its botanical gardens and old harbor is exactly the kind of thing I look for and can't find on any regular tourism site. The bike rental cost 35 lev per day — less than a drink at Tel Aviv port."

Shiran Biton, Haifa

3 nights, June 2024, friends

"I came to Varna after a difficult year looking for quiet and good food. Maya introduced me to the Archaeological Museum and the prehistoric gold jewelry collection — 6,600-year-old treasures and almost no one around. A home-style meal with local white wine for 60 lev for two. The Bulgarians know how to live."

Yonatan Sapir, Jerusalem

5 nights, October 2024, solo

FAQ

Common questions about Varna

Do Israelis need a visa for Bulgaria in 2025?

No. Israelis with a valid Israeli passport enter Bulgaria visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Bulgaria is an EU member but not yet fully part of the Schengen zone (it is in the accession process as of early 2025), so a passport check at the border is possible. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry.

When is the best time to fly to Varna?

June and early September are the ideal weeks: the sea is warm (24-26°C), humidity is lower compared to July-August, prices are 30-40% below peak, and beaches are not packed with summer-holiday families. July-August is peak season with heat, crowds, and high prices — but also the highest energy if you're looking for nightlife and events.

How many days do you need in Varna?

3 nights is the minimum for a full experience: one full day for the city itself (museum, market, local food), one day for the beach and sea, and one day for a trip to Balchik or Cape Kaliakra — a stunning cliff 100 km north. If you have 5 nights, add a day camping on the northern coast peninsula and a visit to Kaliakra.

What is a realistic daily budget for a couple in Varna?

Average budget for a couple: 3-star accommodation in central Varna — ₪150-220 per night, market breakfast — ₪30, local lunch — ₪60-80, dinner with local wine — ₪120-160, public transport + admissions — ₪40. Total roughly ₪400-500 per day for a couple excluding accommodation. Golden Sands is 30% more expensive — it's better to sleep in the city and travel to the beach.
