Overview
🇧🇬Nesebar
🇧🇬Bulgaria
Nesebar is an ancient city perched on a small rocky peninsula jutting into the Black Sea, where layers of Thracian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history are baked into every stone and archway. Cobblestone lanes wind between dozens of preserved Byzantine churches whose weathered facades face the open sea, and at dusk the old town glows a shade of gold that stops you mid-step. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nesebar pairs genuine historical depth with sandy Black Sea beaches just minutes away — the rare destination that rewards both the curious and the sun-seeker.

Local tips
Good to know about Nesebar
- 🕗Arrive in Nesebar Old Town before 8:00 AM — the cobblestone alleys are still empty, the light is soft, and you can photograph the Byzantine churches without the wall of organized tours that rolls in from 9:30 onward.
- 🚢Cross to Nesebar Old Town by the small passenger ferry from Sunny Beach port (about 5 lev), not by car. Parking at the peninsula entrance is expensive and frustrating — the ferry drops you right inside the old city, stress-free.
- 🍷When buying local Bulgarian wine, look specifically for the Malbec varietal grown around Burgas, not the generic 'souvenir' bottles in tourist shops. The restaurant Kapitanska Sreshta sometimes sells unlabeled local bottles on request.
- 🌊The southern beach of Nesebar (the southern end of Central Beach) is far less crowded than the northern strips. Sun loungers cost around 15–20 lev per day, and there is none of the street-seller pressure that characterizes nearby Sunny Beach.

"Nesebar is one of the rare cities in the Mediterranean — in the world, really — where you walk two minutes from a 5th-century Byzantine church to a simple fish shack on the harbour and feel like time simply never made up its mind. That is exactly what I love about it."
Loves
There is a tiny café called Stariyat Chardak right on Mesembria Street near the ruins of the Old Basilica. They serve banya cha (cold Bulgarian herbal tea) and a homemade cheese pastry the owner bakes every morning. No big sign, no English menu — this one we keep to ourselves.
Skip
The 'fresh fish' restaurants right on the bridge entrance to Old Nesebar — the ones with giant banners and waiters pulling you off the street. The fish is usually frozen, prices are inflated by double, and they block your path to the genuinely good places deeper in. Keep walking.
Boutique pick
I build a day-and-a-half experience I call 'Nesebar in Two Layers': the first morning is a self-guided walk through the Byzantine churches with an audio guide I send by WhatsApp. Afternoon is a private cooking workshop at the home of Tsveta, a local resident who teaches authentic Bulgarian kavarma and baniтza soup. The evening ends at the harbour with a local rakia bottle I personally select. Second morning — a short private coastal boat ride before the sea fills up. Package price including boutique accommodation for 2 nights starts at ₪1,100 per person.
Client stories
What returning travelers say about Nesebar
"We flew to Burgas in early September and Nesebar was the surprise of the trip. We woke up early on the second day and barely saw another tourist in the old town — just cats and stunning churches. The ferry from Sunny Beach was an experience in itself. We will definitely go back, but next time we are staying at least 3 nights instead of 2."

"I went with two friends for a week. Nesebar was three days of the trip and we did not get bored for a single moment. We ate authentic Bulgarian kavarma at a small restaurant inside the city (not on the bridge!), wandered among Byzantine ruins, and stood at sunset on the seawall overlooking the Black Sea. Our favourite thing was that you can live very comfortably there for ₪400 per day all-in."
Michal Shapira
3 Friends | 7 nights | July | Nesebar + Burgas
"We arrived with two kids aged 8 and 11. Nesebar is perfect for families — compact, calm, and the kids were as excited by the churches and walls as by the beach. We booked a small boutique room in the heart of the old city for ₪320 per night — two minutes' walk from everything. The fish we ate at the inner harbour was the freshest we have had in years."

FAQ
Common questions about Nesebar
Do Israelis need a visa to travel to Bulgaria to visit Nesebar?
No. Israeli citizens are exempt from a visa to Bulgaria for stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the entry date. Bulgaria is not yet a full Schengen member (accession planned for 2025), but entry is very straightforward — the flight from Tel Aviv to Burgas (the airport nearest Nesebar) takes about 2 hours 15 minutes.
What is the best time to visit Nesebar, and what is the weather like?
The ideal window is June and mid-September: warm sea (24–26°C), a lively but not overwhelming city, and accommodation prices 20–30% lower than the July-August peak. August is absolute peak — hot, packed, and expensive. April-May is historically beautiful but the sea is still cold (16–18°C). October is quiet, with low prices and the old city nearly to yourselves.
How many days does Nesebar need, and how can it be combined with other destinations?
Nesebar Old Town itself needs one to one-and-a-half focused days. The classic Israeli combination: 3 nights at Sunny Beach (beach + nightlife), 2 nights in Old Nesebar, and a day trip to Burgas (port city with a great market and archaeology museum). For nature lovers: add one night in Pomorie ('Bulgaria's wine village') — 90 minutes away. A total of 6–7 nights is the right format for a full holiday.
How safe is Nesebar for Israelis, and what is a realistic daily budget?
Nesebar is very safe for Israeli tourists. The main risk is pickpocketing in crowded markets — watch your wallets during peak hours. There is no specific security tension toward Israelis. Realistic daily budget: boutique accommodation ₪250–400 per night for a couple, a main meal 30–55 lev per person (approximately ₪55–100), site entry fees 5–10 lev. A total of ₪400–600 per couple per day all-in is very manageable, excluding flights. Credit cards are accepted most of the time, but keep 100–200 lev in cash handy.
