From the airport
From VIE Airport, a Railjet reaches Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes, while the S7 reaches Wien Mitte in roughly 25 minutes; fares are generally around ₪18-25. The nonstop CAT reaches Wien Mitte in about 16 minutes but costs roughly ₪60-70, so it is rarely the best value. A taxi or transfer to the center takes about 25-40 minutes and costs around ₪150-220, depending on traffic.
Need a car?
No. Within Vienna, a car is mostly an unnecessary expense: the U-Bahn, trams, and buses are excellent, parking is costly, and much of the center is walkable. Rent one only if continuing to the Wachau Valley, the lake district, or rural areas outside the city.
Tips
For a multi-day stay, compare a 24- or 72-hour transit pass with single tickets, and validate any paper ticket before the first ride. The WienMobil app provides live routing and ticket purchases; on weekends, the U-Bahn also runs overnight.
