Overview
🇦🇹Salzburg
🇦🇹Austria
Salzburg is an elegant, compact escape of Baroque lanes, Hohensalzburg Fortress and Alpine scenery visible from almost every corner. Israeli travelers explore Getreidegasse and Hellbrunn Palace, take day trips to the Salzkammergut lakes and Hallstatt, and visit in December for some of Europe’s loveliest Christmas markets. It is also an excellent gateway to family road trips across SalzburgerLand and ski holidays in Flachau, Wagrain and Obertauern.

Suggested plan
A perfect Salzburg itinerary
Day by day, so you can picture the whole trip.
- 1
Day 1
Old Town and the fortress
Begin in Mirabell Gardens, cross Makartsteg and continue through Getreidegasse to Mozart's Birthplace and Residenzplatz. Ride the funicular to Hohensalzburg Fortress in the afternoon, when the city and Alps spread out below the walls.
- 2
Day 2
Mozart, the river and local Salzburg
Visit Salzburg Cathedral, Salzburg Museum or the DomQuartier, then walk along the Salzach to Mozart's Residence on Makartplatz. In the evening, take the lift up Mönchsberg for the viewpoint and Museum of Modern Art, or enjoy the relaxed evening atmosphere around Linzergasse.
- 3
Day 3
Hellbrunn and Untersberg
Travel to Hellbrunn Palace and tour its trick fountains, a genuine family favorite in warm weather. Continue on bus 25 to the Untersberg cable car for a dramatic Alpine viewpoint, but only with clear visibility and after checking wind conditions.
- 4
Day 4
The Salzkammergut lakes
Head to St. Gilgen on Wolfgangsee, stroll along the waterfront and continue by boat to St. Wolfgang during the sailing season. With a car, add viewpoints and swimming spots around Fuschlsee; without one, bus 150 is the simplest and most scenic route into the lake district.
- 5
Day 5
Hallstatt or a relaxed city day
For a full day out, leave early for Hallstatt, combining the waterfront, Market Square and Skywalk if open, preferably by train and ferry to avoid parking congestion. If you would rather skip another journey, walk around Leopoldskroner Weiher, visit Hangar-7 and finish with Austrian coffee in the Old Town.

Getting around
From the airport
Salzburg Airport is about 4 km from the center. Buses 2 and 10 reach the Old Town or main station in roughly 20-30 minutes for about ₪12-15; a taxi downtown takes around 15 minutes and usually costs ₪65-90.
Need a car?
Not within Salzburg: the center is compact, walkable and well served by buses. A car is useful for several days around the Salzkammergut lakes, St. Gilgen, Wolfgangsee or the Grossglockner Alpine Road; for Hallstatt alone, public transport avoids costly parking.
Tips
Check whether your hotel provides a Salzburg Card, or buy one if you plan to visit the fortress, Untersberg and several museums. Pick up a rental car only when leaving the city, as central parking is limited and expensive.
Kosher & Jewish
Chabad / community
Chabad of Salzburg serves travelers and students and, depending on the season and advance registration, offers prayers, Shabbat meals and kosher guidance. The city also has a Jewish community and synagogue on Lasserstraße; always confirm prayer times, registration and security arrangements, as daily services should not be assumed.
Kosher food
The city has very few permanent kosher dining options, so observant travelers generally pre-order meals through Chabad, book an apartment with a kitchen and shop for products bearing a recognized kosher symbol. Those comfortable with kosher-friendly choices will find vegan, fish and vegetable dishes, but shared kitchens are not kosher; Mozartkugel also comes from many producers, so check the package for certification rather than relying on the product name.

Local tips
Good to know about Salzburg
- 🛏️For a romantic stay choose the Altstadt, but for better value and easy station access look around Mirabellplatz or Linzer Gasse.
- 🎟️The Salzburg Card offers its best value on a full sightseeing day that includes the fortress, Mönchsberg lift and Hellbrunn Palace, so plan a route around the included attractions.
- 🎭During the Salzburg Festival in July and August, reserve hotels and restaurants months ahead or choose different dates to avoid sharply higher prices.
- 🚌Salzburg Airport is roughly 20 to 30 minutes from the center by city bus, so a taxi is unnecessary unless you are a family carrying substantial luggage.
- ✡️Kosher travelers have limited ready-made options in the city, so contact Chabad Salzburg in advance, verify current certification and consider an apartment with a kitchenette.
- 🛍️Most shops close on Sundays and public-holiday eves, so buy groceries on Saturday or rely on the limited stores at Salzburg Hauptbahnhof.

"To me, Salzburg feels like a city you can walk straight into as if it were a film set, with Baroque lanes, nearby mountains and a river running through it all. Israelis fall for its mix of compact city life and Alpine scenery, especially when they reach Hohensalzburg Fortress and see snowy peaks beyond the rooftops."
Loves
I love taking the Mönchsberg lift beside the Museum der Moderne, then leaving the busy terrace behind and following the wooded path to the Richterhöhe viewpoint. It is an easy, peaceful walk with one of the city’s finest views of the fortress and the Alps.
Skip
Do not buy Mozartkugel from every souvenir shop as though they were identical, since the handmade original comes from Café Fürst and costs more but is a completely different experience.
Boutique pick
I start early in Mirabell Gardens before the tour groups arrive, cross the river via Makartsteg and climb through the old lanes to Hohensalzburg Fortress. In the afternoon, I head to Hellbrunn Palace and its trick fountains, then return for a quiet sunset on Mönchsberg.
