# 🇪🇸 Lanzarote — Spain

> Lanzarote is the Canary Island for travelers who want a beach holiday framed by otherworldly scenery: black craters, vines planted in volcanic hollows and turquoise coves. Israelis typically come for a sunny week in Playa Blanca or Puerto del Carmen, combining Timanfaya National Park, wine tasting in La Geria and swimming at the Papagayo beaches. Design and art lovers follow César Manrique’s legacy at Jameos del Agua and Mirador del Río, while families add Aqualava Waterpark or a boat trip to La Graciosa. Calmer and more design-conscious than Tenerife or Gran Canaria, the island offers excellent resorts, surfing, inviting promenades and mild weather almost year-round.

## Where to stay

- **Puerto del Carmen** — Best for: Young travelers, nightlife, couples and mid-range budgets. The most convenient base for restaurants, bars and a beach within walking distance: Avenida de las Playas runs along Playa Grande toward the nightlife around Centro Atlántico. Hotels such as Hotel Fariones and Seaside Los Jameos are close to the sea, while the old harbor quarter feels more relaxed at night. The trade-off is noise in the central sections and a highly tourist-oriented atmosphere, especially around Avenida de las Playas.
- **Playa Blanca** — Best for: Families, couples, luxury and resort holidays. The polished southern resort town offers a long promenade, family-friendly Playa Flamingo and restaurants and shops around Marina Rubicón. Princesa Yaiza and Dreams Lanzarote Playa Dorada are strong choices for an upscale stay, while the Papagayo beaches are a short drive away. Prices are generally higher, and journeys to the island's north and César Manrique sites are longer.
- **Costa Teguise** — Best for: Families, windsurfers and relaxed holidays. A practical east-coast base centered on Las Cucharas beach and Pueblo Marinero, with surf schools, holiday apartments and hotels such as Paradisus by Meliá Salinas Lanzarote. Its position is relatively convenient for Arrecife, Jameos del Agua and the north. Winds can be strong, and nightlife is much quieter than in Puerto del Carmen.
- **Arrecife** — Best for: Budget travelers, local culture and car-free stays. The island capital suits travelers who prefer a real town to a resort: Calle León y Castillo for shopping, Charco de San Ginés for an evening out and Playa del Reducto for swimming. Arrecife Gran Hotel & Spa provides excellent views and a central location. Accommodation and bus access are relatively convenient, but evenings feel less resort-like and the island's most striking beaches require a drive.
- **Caleta de Famara** — Best for: Surfers, laid-back young travelers, nature and budget stays. A small surf village beneath the Risco de Famara cliffs, with sandy streets, surf schools and superb sunsets along Playa de Famara. Accommodation mainly consists of apartments, guesthouses and surf houses, and the mood is casual rather than glamorous. The sea can be rough for small children, evening services are limited and a car is almost essential.
- **Yaiza and Uga** — Best for: Couples, quiet, nature and rural escapes. These whitewashed southwestern villages place you between Timanfaya, the La Geria wine region and the coastal road to El Golfo. Rural boutique properties such as La Casona de Yaiza offer quiet courtyards and volcanic scenery away from the resort promenades. It is a romantic, distinctive base, but there is almost no nightlife or walkable beach and a car is essential.

## Getting around

- **Airport to city:** César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport lies between Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen. An official taxi costs about ₪55-75 to Puerto del Carmen and takes 10-15 minutes, ₪70-100 to Costa Teguise in 15-20 minutes, and ₪180-240 to Playa Blanca in 30-40 minutes. IntercityBus routes 22 or 23 serve Arrecife, while route 161/261 links the airport with Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca; fares are generally ₪6-14 per person and there is no train. A prebooked private transfer can make sense for a family traveling to Playa Blanca at around ₪180-280 per vehicle, while Uber and Bolt are not dependable solutions on the island.
- **Do you need a car?** Yes, most Israeli visitors should rent a car for at least three days. Roads are good, distances are short, and major sights such as Timanfaya, the Papagayo beaches, La Geria, Jameos del Agua and Mirador del Río are scattered in different directions; for a family or couple, a car is also far cheaper than multiple organized tours. Travelers staying in one resort and wanting only a beach plus a guided excursion can manage with buses and taxis, but a car is nearly essential in Famara, Yaiza and for rural touring.
- **Transport tips:** Download the IntercityBus Lanzarote app for timetables, but do not expect city-level frequency after the evening or on Sundays. Free parking is fairly easy outside resort centers; access to the Papagayo beaches involves a dirt road and a small entry fee payable by cash or card, so choose a car you will not mind getting dusty. Many petrol stations are self-service, and on the LZ-67 and LZ-703 roads you should stop for photos only in designated pullouts.

## What it costs (for Israeli travelers)

- **Round-trip flight from TLV:** ₪1,500-3,000 (one stop)
- **4-5-night package:** ₪2,700-5,200 per person
- **Mid-range hotel nightly:** ₪380-700 per room
- **Five-star hotel:** ₪800-1,600 per room
- **Restaurant meal:** ₪65-130 per person
- **Local beer:** ₪10-20
- **Coffee:** ₪6-12
- **Short taxi ride:** ₪25-50
- **Rental car daily:** ₪110-230 (before fuel)
- **Manrique-site admission:** ₪35-70
- **Daily budget per person:** ₪300-650 (excluding hotel)
- **Family, five nights:** ₪11,000-19,000 (including flights)

## Kosher food, Chabad & Jewish community

- **Chabad house:** Lanzarote currently has no established permanent Chabad house, tourist synagogue or reliable daily minyan, including in Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. Do not assume Shabbat meals or holiday services will be available without advance confirmation; check shortly before traveling with Chabad in the Canary Islands, whose more established activity is on Gran Canaria or Tenerife. Shabbat-observant travelers should favor an apartment within walking distance of the promenade and supermarket and bring wine, challah and sealed products from Israel. — [Google Maps](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Chabad%20Lanzarote%20Lanzarote)
- **Kosher food:** The island has no permanently certified kosher restaurant, so a venue offering vegan dishes or fish is not kosher without supervision. Larger Lidl, Hiperdino and Mercadona branches stock fruit, vegetables, pasta, rice, canned goods and vegan products, and may occasionally carry imported items with kosher symbols, but selection is not guaranteed. In practice, kosher-observant Israelis rent an apartment with a kitchen, bring meat, snacks and sealed meals from Israel, and buy basic groceries locally; check Spanish and EU food-import rules before departure.

## Suggested itinerary

1. **Day 1: Arrival and Puerto del Carmen beaches** — Collect your car at the airport and settle into Puerto del Carmen, an especially convenient first-night base. Begin with a swim at Playa Grande or the smaller coves of Playa Chica, where the water is usually more sheltered and suitable for snorkeling. Toward evening, walk along Avenida de las Playas and continue to the old harbor. Choose a restaurant with vegetarian dishes or suitable fish according to your needs, bearing in mind that the town has no kosher restaurant.
2. **Day 2: Timanfaya, El Golfo and La Geria** — Leave before 08:30 for Timanfaya National Park to beat the vehicle queues at the Islote de Hilario entrance; the visit includes the Ruta de los Volcanes bus circuit, with no getting off midway. Continue to El Golfo and the green Charco de los Clicos lagoon, then stop at Los Hervideros and the Salinas de Janubio salt pans. Spend the afternoon following the La Geria wine route, visiting Bodega La Geria or El Grifo and keeping the driver's tasting minimal. Return through Yaiza, which looks especially attractive in the final light.
3. **Day 3: César Manrique's northern Lanzarote** — Reach Jameos del Agua near opening time, ahead of coach groups, to experience the lava cave, pool and César Manrique design in relative calm. Continue to Cueva de los Verdes for a guided tour at a prebooked time, then drive to Mirador del Río for views over La Graciosa. Stop for lunch in Haría or bring a picnic, and continue to Casa Museo César Manrique if time allows. On the return journey, you can visit Jardín de Cactus near Guatiza, and it is worth checking combined admission for several CACT centers.
4. **Day 4: Papagayo beaches and Playa Blanca** — Set out early for the Monumento Natural de Los Ajaches and follow the dirt road to Playa de Papagayo before the coves fill and winds increase. Bring water, shade, food and walking shoes, as facilities are limited and the trails between Playa Mujeres, Playa del Pozo and Papagayo are exposed. In the afternoon, move on to Playa Blanca, walk beside Playa Dorada and browse the shops at Marina Rubicón. Stay for sunset on the promenade facing Corralejo on Fuerteventura, then return to your hotel.
5. **Day 5: La Graciosa or Famara** — For a full day with a small-island atmosphere, drive early to Órzola and take the ferry to Caleta de Sebo on La Graciosa; book ahead and leave the car on Lanzarote. Rent bicycles only if you are comfortable riding on sand and in wind, otherwise arrange a 4x4 taxi to Playa de las Conchas and walk near Playa Francesa. Return on an afternoon ferry and stop for sunset at Caleta de Famara. For a slower alternative, skip the ferry, take a surf lesson in Famara and drive up to the Ermita de las Nieves viewpoint.
6. **Day 6: Teguise, Manrique Foundation and departure** — Start in Teguise's old town around Plaza de la Constitución, Palacio Spínola and the whitewashed lanes; if it is Sunday, arrive before 09:30 for the famous market and easier parking. Continue to the Fundación César Manrique in Tahíche, a home built into lava bubbles that perfectly summarizes the island's relationship between architecture and landscape. Before the airport, stop at Charco de San Ginés in Arrecife or do some basic shopping on Calle León y Castillo. Refuel before returning the car and allow extra time, as rental-company queues can grow around European flight departures.

## VAYULOR tips

- 💳 Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including the access point for Playa Papagayo, but carry some cash for markets and small cafés in villages such as Yaiza and Arrieta, and always choose to be charged in euros rather than letting the terminal convert the payment to shekels.
- 🚗 A rental car is almost essential outside Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca; reserve it in advance at ACE Airport, photograph every mark and do not take a standard vehicle onto unpaved roads excluded by the insurance.
- 🌋 Reach Montañas del Fuego in Timanfaya close to opening time, as the road queue can become lengthy between 11:00 and 14:00 and the park’s official bus route cannot be replaced by a self-drive tour.
- 🏨 Israeli families are usually most comfortable in Playa Blanca near Playa Dorada, couples suit the boutique hotels and restaurants of Costa Teguise, while younger groups wanting walkable bars should stay around Avenida de las Playas in Puerto del Carmen.
- 🎟️ Book a performance at Jameos del Agua or a guided dive at Museo Atlántico in advance, especially in July, August and Israeli holiday periods, because capacity is limited and many travelers discover this only after landing.
- 🎰 For concentrated nightlife head to Centro Comercial Atlántico and the bars along Avenida de las Playas, and if visiting Gran Casino de Lanzarote bring your original passport, dress neatly and set a gambling budget beforehand.
- 🍽️ Lanzarote has no reliable permanent network of kosher restaurants or Chabad house, so kosher-observant travelers should bring key products from Israel and stock up at HiperDino, Lidl or Mercadona while checking labels and ingredients.
- 🙏 Restaurant service is generally included, so locals round up or leave about 5% to 10% only for good service; in quiet villages such as Haría, dress and behave respectfully and never block residents’ doorways for photographs.
- 🌬️ Even in August pack a light wind layer and closed shoes for lava trails such as Volcán El Cuervo, and on calima days check AEMET, drink extra water and avoid strenuous activity at midday.
- 📱 European roaming on an Israeli mobile plan does not automatically guarantee Canary Islands coverage, so confirm Lanzarote is included or install an eSIM before flying and download offline maps for Timanfaya, La Geria and Papagayo.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do Israelis need a visa for Lanzarote?**

Lanzarote is part of Spain and the Schengen Area, so Israeli passport holders do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. If ETIAS is in operation by your travel date, complete the online authorization in advance and check the latest passport requirements.

**Are there direct flights from Israel to Lanzarote, and how long is the journey?**

Direct flights from Tel Aviv to Lanzarote are mainly seasonal charters and are not available year-round; a nonstop flight takes roughly 6.5 to 7 hours. On most dates, travelers connect through Madrid, Barcelona, or another European city, with a typical total journey of 9 to 13 hours.

**When is the best time to visit Lanzarote, and when is peak season?**

Lanzarote is pleasant almost year-round, but May through October is best for beach time, with July and August bringing peak crowds and prices for Israeli families. September and October offer warmer water and fewer visitors, while winter is excellent for Timanfaya excursions but can be windy and cool in the evening.

**How many days do you need in Lanzarote?**

Allow at least five nights for Lanzarote, while seven nights is ideal for combining Timanfaya, César Manrique sites, Papagayo beaches, and downtime at the hotel. Three or four nights cover the essentials, but the journey and connection from Israel make such a short stay less worthwhile.

**How do you get around Lanzarote, and is a rental car essential?**

A rental car is the easiest way to explore Lanzarote, particularly for Timanfaya, La Geria, Mirador del Río, and the Papagayo beaches without relying on tours. Travelers staying mainly in Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca can use buses and taxis, but automatic cars should be reserved early in peak periods.

**How much does a holiday in Lanzarote cost from Israel?**

A six- to seven-night Lanzarote holiday typically costs ₪5,500 to ₪9,500 per person when sharing a room, including connecting flights, a good hotel, a car, and attractions; August or an upscale resort can exceed ₪11,000 per person. A family of four will usually spend around ₪17,000 to ₪29,000, depending on flights and accommodation.

**Is Lanzarote safe for Israeli tourists?**

Lanzarote is considered very safe, including the resort areas of Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise, and Puerto del Carmen, with opportunistic theft from cars or unattended beach belongings being the main concern. Israelis should remain discreet during periods of tension, follow official Israeli travel guidance, and never leave passports or bags in cars at Timanfaya or Papagayo car parks.

**What are the must-see attractions in Lanzarote?**

Lanzarote’s essentials are the volcanic landscape of Timanfaya National Park, Jameos del Agua, the Mirador del Río viewpoint, and the Papagayo beaches. Add a drive through La Geria’s black-soil vineyards and the Fundación César Manrique to understand how the island blends architecture and lava into one distinctive experience.

**What is nightlife like in Lanzarote, and is there a casino?**

Lanzarote’s nightlife is centered in Puerto del Carmen, particularly along Avenida de las Playas and around Centro Atlántico, with bars, music, and smaller clubs, but this is not Ibiza. The island does have an operating casino, Gran Casino de Lanzarote, while Playa Blanca and Marina Rubicón are better for a relaxed evening drink by the water.

**Is there kosher food or Chabad in Lanzarote, who is the island best for, and what should you pack or combine it with?**

Lanzarote does not have a dependable year-round network of kosher restaurants or a permanently active Chabad house, so kosher-observant travelers should bring supplies and consider an apartment near Lidl or Hiperdino; couples often prefer Playa Blanca, while families do well in Costa Teguise or Puerto del Carmen. Pack a windproof layer, shoes suitable for lava trails, sunscreen, and water shoes, and with at least nine or ten days you can add Corralejo in Fuerteventura via the ferry from Playa Blanca.
