# 🇪🇸 Costa Brava — Spain

> Costa Brava is Catalonia’s spectacular wild coast, shaped by turquoise coves, pine-covered cliffs and atmospheric Mediterranean towns. Israelis mainly come in summer for family stays in Lloret de Mar, boat trips and swimming around Tossa de Mar, and energetic nights at St. Trop' and Disco Tropics. Couples gravitate toward whitewashed Cadaqués, the scenic Camí de Ronda and elegant hotels near S’Agaró and Begur. Flying into Barcelona also makes it easy to add shopping on Passeig de Gràcia or at La Roca Village, while seasonal Chabad services may operate around Lloret de Mar in summer.

## Where to stay

- **Lloret de Mar** — Best for: Young travelers, nightlife and budget trips. The liveliest base for an easygoing holiday, with Lloret Beach, Passeig d'Agustí Font and the clubs around Avinguda Just Marlès. Hotels such as L'Azure and Gran Hotel Flamingo suit travelers who want pools, bars and everything within walking distance. Value is good, but the center becomes very noisy on July and August nights and is less suitable for families seeking peace.
- **Tossa de Mar** — Best for: Couples, families and scenic atmosphere. Fortified Vila Vella, Platja Gran and the lanes around Carrer del Portal make Tossa a more romantic and relaxed base than Lloret. Waterfront Hotel Diana and Gran Hotel Reymar by Mar Menuda are well-known, superbly located choices. Evenings are pleasantly calm, but there is no railway station and northern coves take longer to reach.
- **Platja d'Aro** — Best for: Families, shopping and resort holidays. The most practical resort town for Israeli families, with a broad beach, restaurants and shops along Avinguda de s'Agaró and Cavall Bernat, plus Aquadiver water park. Hotel Aromar offers a beachfront location, while Hotel Cala del Pi provides a more luxurious stay beside Cala del Pi. It is easy to holiday here without elaborate planning, though the atmosphere is more commercial and crowded than in the northern fishing villages.
- **Begur** — Best for: Couples, boutique stays, nature and coves. Begur sits on a hill around Plaça de la Vila and its castle, above some of the coast's loveliest coves, including Sa Riera, Aiguablava and Sa Tuna. The center has boutique properties such as La Bionda, while Parador de Aiguablava overlooks the sea. It is a beautiful romantic base, but prices are high, parking is difficult and reaching the beaches requires a car or steep walking.
- **L'Estartit** — Best for: Families, diving and mid-range budgets. A long, shallow sandy beach, Passeig Marítim and boat trips to the Medes Islands make L'Estartit excellent for children, snorkeling and diving. Hotel Panorama is close to both the beach and marina, and there are many practical family apartments. The town is flat and accessible, though less elegant than Begur, and many tourism businesses close during winter.
- **Cadaqués** — Best for: Couples, tranquility, art and nature. Whitewashed houses beneath Santa Maria church, the Platja Gran promenade and Dalí's house in Portlligat create Costa Brava's most distinctive atmosphere. Hotel Playa Sol is a classic choice within walking distance of the center and sea. The winding mountain road and distance from Barcelona make arrival slow, while prices and parking are particularly challenging in August.

## Getting around

- **Airport to city:** Most Israelis land at Barcelona-El Prat: a rental car reaches Lloret in about 1 hour 20 minutes, Platja d'Aro in 1 hour 30 minutes and Begur in around two hours; a private taxi costs roughly ₪600-900 depending on the destination. In summer, Moventis/Sarfa runs direct buses from terminals T1 and T2 to Lloret, Tossa and Platja d'Aro, generally costing ₪55-85 per person and taking 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes; advance booking is wise. By rail, travel via Barcelona Sants to Blanes or Girona, then continue by bus or taxi, a combination normally costing ₪45-100 but requiring a transfer. From Girona-Costa Brava Airport, main resorts are around 30-60 minutes away and taxis cost approximately ₪180-400; Uber and Cabify are mainly useful around Barcelona rather than for moving among the coves.
- **Do you need a car?** Yes, for most travelers a car is the difference between a resort break and genuinely discovering Costa Brava: Begur's coves, Cap de Creus and villages such as Peratallada and Pals are poorly connected to one another. A family staying entirely in Lloret, Platja d'Aro or L'Estartit can manage with buses, boat services and taxis, but couples and nature lovers benefit greatly from a car. Young visitors planning to drink in Lloret should stay centrally and avoid driving at night.
- **Transport tips:** Use Pàrquing Costa Brava or EasyPark where supported, and book local taxis through your hotel or the PideTaxi app; do not rely on Uber outside Barcelona. In July and August, reach the parking areas at Aiguablava, Sa Tuna and Cala Pola before 09:00 because they fill up and access may be restricted. The centers of Begur, Tossa and Cadaqués contain narrow one-way streets, so leave the car in an outer parking lot and do not attempt to drive directly to your hotel without checking first.

## What it costs (for Israeli travelers)

- **Return flight from TLV:** ₪900-1,800 (summer: ₪2,400+)
- **4-5 night package:** ₪2,400-4,500 per person
- **Mid-range hotel night:** ₪450-850 per room
- **Five-star hotel:** ₪1,100-2,400 per room
- **Restaurant meal:** ₪75-150 per person
- **Local beer:** ₪12-24
- **Coffee:** ₪7-13
- **Short taxi ride:** ₪35-65
- **Rental car per day:** ₪150-320 (before fuel)
- **Medes Islands cruise:** ₪75-130 per person
- **Daily budget per person:** ₪350-700 (excluding hotel)
- **Family, five nights:** ₪11,000-19,000 (all-in)

## Kosher food, Chabad & Jewish community

- **Chabad house:** There is no permanent Chabad house in Costa Brava and no reliable daily minyan in the coastal towns. The nearest established address is Chabad Barcelona in the Les Corts area near Avinguda Diagonal, offering services and pre-booked Shabbat meals and sometimes assistance with kosher food orders. Strictly observant travelers should stock up in Barcelona before driving north and confirm the current address, prayer times and availability directly with Chabad for their dates. — [Google Maps](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Chabad%20Costa%20Brava%20Costa%20Brava)
- **Kosher food:** There are currently no permanently certified kosher restaurants in Costa Brava's main resort towns, so do not depend on finding one spontaneously in Lloret, Begur or Cadaqués. Kosher-observant Israelis shop before leaving Barcelona at stores such as Ben Ben Kosher House, or bring sealed products from larger supermarkets and choose an apartment with a kitchen; Carrefour, Caprabo and Mercadona may carry basic items, but kosher selection varies and certification must be checked. More flexible travelers order simple vegan or vegetarian dishes, while understanding that the kitchen itself is not kosher.

## Suggested itinerary

1. **Day 1: Lloret, Santa Clotilde Gardens and Tossa** — Begin before 09:00 at Jardins de Santa Clotilde, terraced gardens above the sea between Lloret and Fenals Beach, then descend for a swim at Cala Boadella. Around lunch, walk along Fenals Beach or stop at a café on Passeig Jacint Verdaguer. In the afternoon, drive to Tossa de Mar, enter Vila Vella through its gates and climb toward the lighthouse for sunset over Platja Gran. Stay for dinner in the lanes outside the walls, where vegetable, rice and fish dishes are easy to find for travelers who do not require a kosher kitchen.
2. **Day 2: Sant Feliu, S'Agaró and Platja d'Aro** — Drive to Sant Feliu de Guíxols in the morning and begin the Camí de Ronda section from Sant Pol toward S'Agaró, a relatively manageable coastal route with steps, viewpoints and grand villas. Stop for a swim at Sa Conca and carry a picnic if kosher food matters. In the afternoon, continue to Platja d'Aro for shopping around Avinguda de s'Agaró, home to Zara, Mango and other Spanish chains. Families can replace shopping with a few hours at Aquadiver, then walk the illuminated promenade in the evening.
3. **Day 3: Begur and its blue coves** — Reach Aiguablava by 08:30 to secure parking and enjoy calm water before the crowds, or choose Sa Riera if you prefer a broader beach. Continue along the Camí de Ronda toward Cala d'Illa Roja according to your fitness and sea conditions. At midday, head uphill to Begur, eat or picnic around Plaça de la Vila and explore the colonial-era houses in the central streets. Climb to Castell de Begur near sunset, then stay for the small bars around Carrer Pi i Ralló.
4. **Day 4: Stone villages, Pals and Peratallada** — Start in the old town of Pals before day groups arrive and climb to Mirador Josep Pla for views over the rice fields and Montgrí mountains. Continue to Peratallada, park outside the walls and wander among Plaça de les Voltes, stone arches and small shops. Reserve a restaurant with vegetarian choices for lunch, or bring kosher food and use the picnic area outside the historic center. In the afternoon, visit the Greco-Roman site of Empúries and finish with a swim at Sant Martí d'Empúries.
5. **Day 5: Medes Islands and L'Estartit** — Pre-book a morning glass-bottom boat trip from L'Estartit harbor around the Medes Islands, or an introductory dive through one of the licensed dive centers. Families with small children can remain in the shallow section of Platja de L'Estartit, while walkers climb to the Cap de la Barra viewpoint. Have a light lunch beside the marina or a picnic on the beach. In the evening, drive to Torroella de Montgrí for a relaxed walk around Plaça de la Vila, and if energy remains, tackle the castle climb only during the cooler hours.
6. **Day 6: Cadaqués, Portlligat and Cap de Creus** — Leave early because the road to Cadaqués is winding and parking fills quickly; reserve Salvador Dalí's Portlligat house weeks ahead, as entry is in small groups at a fixed time. Afterward, follow the waterfront into central Cadaqués, climb to Santa Maria church and explore the white lanes around Carrer des Call. In the afternoon, continue into Cap de Creus Natural Park, subject to seasonal access restrictions, and stop at the windswept viewpoints near the lighthouse. Return to the Cadaqués promenade for sunset; if your base is far away, this is the night worth staying locally rather than driving back in the dark.

## VAYULOR tips

- 💳 Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but keep ₪100–150 in cash for car parks, kiosks and small beaches, and always choose to be charged in euros rather than accepting the terminal’s shekel conversion.
- 🚗 A rental car is the right way to connect Begur, Pals and Calella de Palafrugell, but in July and August reach the Cala Aiguablava and Sa Tuna car parks before 9:00 a.m., as access may close once they are full.
- 🛏️ I recommend Begur or Llafranc for couples, Tossa de Mar or Platja d’Aro for families, and Lloret de Mar for younger travelers who want clubs and easy access to Israeli package holidays.
- 🎟️ If your trip includes the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres or a Cap Roig Festival concert, reserve a timed ticket in advance, especially from late June through August, as same-day entry is not guaranteed.
- 🌙 For polished nightlife choose S’Agaró or Platja d’Aro, and for large-scale clubbing head to Disco Tropics in Lloret; Gran Casino Costa Brava requires an original passport and admits adults only.
- ✡️ Costa Brava does not have Barcelona’s permanent selection of kosher restaurants, so arrange Shabbat meals and seasonal services in advance with Chabad Costa Brava around Lloret de Mar and bring sealed supplies from the city.
- 🧾 Service charges are not compulsory in Catalonia: at a good restaurant, round up or leave 5%–10% for excellent service, and do not expect fast Israeli-style dinner pacing during peak hours.
- 🔒 Never leave luggage, shopping bags or passports in the car, even in the car parks of Tossa de Mar and Figueres; choose a vehicle without obvious rental stickers and place everything in the boot before arriving.
- 🌬️ The Tramuntana wind can turn a pleasant beach day cool and rough even in summer, so pack a light layer and grippy walking shoes for the rocks and steps of the Camí de Ronda.
- 📱 A 10–20GB European eSIM is usually better value than Israeli roaming, but download offline maps for Begur and Cap de Creus because reception weakens in coves and along remote stretches of coast.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do Israelis need a visa for Costa Brava?**

Israeli passport holders do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in the Schengen Area, including Costa Brava. Before flying, check whether online ETIAS authorization is already required and confirm that your passport meets the validity rules.

**Are there direct flights from Israel to Costa Brava, and how long is the flight?**

Barcelona is the most convenient gateway to Costa Brava, with direct flights from Tel Aviv taking about 4 hours and 40 minutes, followed by a drive of roughly one to two and a half hours depending on the town. Direct flights to Girona may operate seasonally or as part of holiday packages, so availability should be checked for exact dates.

**When is the best time to visit Costa Brava, and what should I pack?**

The best season in Costa Brava runs from late May through September, with peak crowds, warm water and higher prices in July and August; June and September are calmer and especially pleasant. Pack walking shoes for coastal paths, water shoes for rocky coves, a light evening layer and strong sun protection.

**How many days should I spend in Costa Brava, and what should I combine it with?**

Four to six nights let you experience Costa Brava without rushing, including Tossa de Mar, Begur, Cadaqués and a full cove-hopping day. The classic combination is three nights in Barcelona, with Girona, Figueres and the Dalí Theatre-Museum as worthwhile additions.

**What is the best way to get around Costa Brava?**

A rental car is the best option in Costa Brava, especially for coves such as Sa Tuna, Aiguablava and Cala Montjoi, where public transport is limited. Travelers based in Lloret de Mar, Blanes or Tossa de Mar can use buses, but summer parking near towns and beaches fills early.

**How much does a Costa Brava vacation cost?**

A five-night Costa Brava trip typically costs around ₪3,200 to ₪5,500 per person sharing a double room, including flights from Tel Aviv, a rental car and a good hotel, rising above ₪6,500 in July and August. Family apartments in Blanes or L’Estartit are relatively affordable, while boutique hotels in Begur, Llafranc and Cadaqués cost considerably more.

**Is Costa Brava safe for Israeli travelers?**

Costa Brava is generally safe, but travelers should watch for pickpocketing in Lloret de Mar, at bus stations and on crowded beaches, and never leave luggage or phones visible in a car. **What should I not miss in Costa Brava, and is it better for families or couples?**

Costa Brava essentials include Tossa de Mar’s Vila Vella, a walk along the Camí de Ronda, Begur’s coves and Cadaqués with Cap de Creus. Families tend to prefer Blanes, L’Estartit and Water World, while couples are better suited to Begur, Tamariu, Llafranc and Cadaqués.

**Where is the nightlife in Costa Brava, and is there a casino?**

Costa Brava’s nightlife hub is Lloret de Mar, home to bars and clubs such as Disco Tropics and St. Trop’, while Begur and Cadaqués offer quieter evenings. There is a proper casino, Gran Casino Costa Brava in Lloret de Mar, although the region is not a major casino destination like Limassol or Bucharest.

**Are kosher food and Chabad available in Costa Brava?**

Kosher options in Costa Brava are very limited, and travelers should not rely on permanent kosher restaurants in most coastal towns; Chabad Costa Brava in the Lloret de Mar area may offer seasonal Shabbat meals and services with advance booking. Kosher-observant visitors commonly stock up in Barcelona, book an apartment with a kitchen and confirm current arrangements directly with Chabad.
