# 🇦🇿 Baku — Azerbaijan

> Baku is a surprisingly easy city break from Israel, pairing upscale hotels and good value with ancient stone lanes and futuristic architecture on the Caspian Sea. Israeli travelers explore the UNESCO-listed Icherisheher, watch the Flame Towers glow from Highland Park, and stroll the waterfront boulevard toward Deniz Mall. Shopping on Nizami Street and at Port Baku Mall fits neatly between kosher dining at 7/40 or Chabad and a day trip to Ateshgah Fire Temple and the burning hillside of Yanar Dag. It is not a classic beach holiday, but an elegant, convenient and family-friendly urban escape with a visible Jewish connection.

## Where to stay

- **Old City, Icherisheher** — Best for: Couples, first-time visitors and romantic atmosphere. Staying inside the walls near Maiden Tower, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and Kichik Gala Street puts Baku's most photogenic quarter outside your door. Hotels such as Four Seasons Baku and Shah Palace Hotel are well placed for walking to the boulevard and Nizami Street. The trade-offs are cobbles that are awkward with luggage, restricted taxi access and rooms that can be expensive or small in historic buildings.
- **Fountains Square and Nizami Street** — Best for: Young travelers, nightlife, shopping and anyone who wants to walk everywhere. This is the easiest base for Israeli visitors: pedestrian Nizami Street, Fountains Square, bars, cafés and stores such as Zara and Massimo Dutti stay lively into the evening. Passage 1901 and hotels such as Courtyard by Marriott Baku are close to the action. Weekend street noise lasts late, and prices are higher than outside the center.
- **Baku Boulevard and Sabail** — Best for: Families, couples and a central yet relatively calm stay. The stretch around Denizkanari Park, Deniz Mall and National Flag Square suits evening walks with children and Caspian Sea views. Hilton Baku and InterContinental Baku offer a high standard with convenient access to the boulevard, funicular and center. It is less lively than Fountains Square after dark, and the southern sections require a taxi to the Old City.
- **Nasimi and 28 May** — Best for: Budget travelers, families and shopping. Around 28 May station, 28 Mall, Rashid Behbudov Street and Samad Vurgun Street, apartments and hotels are better priced, with supermarkets and excellent transport nearby. Holiday Inn Baku suits families seeking modern rooms without Old City prices. Traffic is heavy and the setting less romantic, while the walk to Fountains Square usually takes 15 to 25 minutes.
- **White City and Port Baku** — Best for: Luxury travelers, business visitors, couples and designer shopping. Port Baku Mall, the Crescent Bay waterfront and White City's new boulevards create a polished version of Baku with elegant restaurants and Gucci, Burberry and BOSS shopping. JW Marriott Absheron Baku and The Ritz-Carlton, Baku stand out for travelers who value service and a pool over historic lanes. Rates are high, and trips to the Old City and Fountains Square depend on taxis and rush-hour traffic.
- **Bilgah and Mardakan** — Best for: Summer families, quiet, beach and resort stays. On the Absheron Peninsula, Bilgah Beach Hotel, Sea Breeze Resort and Bilgah's beaches provide pools, beach clubs and open space best enjoyed from June through September. Mardakan adds villas, beaches and an ancient castle and is relatively close to the airport. It is a poor base for a city-only trip: central Baku is about 35 to 60 minutes away, and summer beach beds and restaurants are expensive.

## Getting around

- **Airport to city:** From Heydar Aliyev International Airport, central Baku is about 25 to 35 minutes without traffic and up to 50 minutes at rush hour. Bolt or Uber Azerbaijan generally costs ₪20-40; an official taxi outside the terminal may cost ₪45-75, so agree on the fare or book through an app. The Aero Express shuttle reaches 28 May via Koroglu in roughly 30 to 40 minutes for about ₪2-4, though it is less convenient with children and luggage. A prebooked private transfer normally costs ₪70-130 per car, while Bilgah or Sea Breeze resorts are around 20 to 35 minutes away and ₪25-60 by app.
- **Do you need a car?** You do not need a car in central Baku: the Old City, Nizami Street and boulevard are walkable, while the metro and app taxis are inexpensive. Families, couples and young groups are usually better off hiring a driver for Gobustan, the mud volcanoes, Ateshgah and Yanar Dag rather than dealing with local driving and parking. A rental makes sense mainly for an independent trip to Shamakhi, Lahic, Gabala or Sheki; expect speed cameras, assertive driving and insurance terms that need careful checking.
- **Transport tips:** Install both Bolt and Uber Azerbaijan and compare fares; during rush hour drivers sometimes cancel short trips, so leave extra time before a reservation or flight. Buy and top up a BakuCard for the metro and buses, but remember that the metro does not enter the Old City itself. Do not drive into Icherisheher's lanes: they are narrow, partly one-way and parking is restricted; if the funicular to Highland Park is closed, use a taxi instead.

## What it costs (for Israeli travelers)

- **Return flight from TLV:** ₪750-1,500 (peak: ₪2,000+)
- **4–5-night package:** ₪1,900-3,800 per person
- **Mid-range hotel nightly:** ₪250-500 (per room)
- **5-star hotel nightly:** ₪650-1,500 (per room)
- **Restaurant meal:** ₪45-110 per person
- **Local beer:** ₪10-22
- **Coffee:** ₪7-16
- **Short taxi ride:** ₪5-14 (by app)
- **Rental car daily:** ₪130-260 (before fuel)
- **Car and driver daily:** ₪300-550 (day trip)
- **Gobustan and fire tour:** ₪100-220 per person
- **Daily budget per person:** ₪220-500 (excluding hotel)
- **Family, 4–5 nights:** ₪7,500-13,500 (family of 4)

## Kosher food, Chabad & Jewish community

- **Chabad house:** Chabad of Baku and the Georgian Jewish synagogue operate in the Nasimi area around Ali Mardan Topchubashov Street, a short ride from Fountains Square. Prayers, Shabbat and holiday meals and kosher-food information can be arranged in advance; schedules change, so do not arrive without contacting them and receiving confirmation. Baku also has Ashkenazi and Mountain Jewish synagogues, but access and prayer times may require coordination and security screening. — [Google Maps](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Chabad%20Baku%20Baku)
- **Kosher food:** The 7/40 restaurant in Baku is known as the principal kosher option for groups and Israeli travelers, but confirm its current address, opening hours, reservation requirements and the certification standard you need. The city does not have a broad selection of permanently operating kosher restaurants; Bravo and Grandmart supermarkets may carry some imported products bearing kosher symbols, but not a complete kosher section. Observant Israelis arrange meals through Chabad or 7/40, bring sealed food from Israel and often choose an apartment with a kitchen; fruit, vegetables and packaged goods can be bought at larger branches after checking labels.

## Suggested itinerary

1. **Day 1: Old City and the boulevard** — Start at Icherisheher's gates at 09:00, before tour groups fill the lanes, and visit the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and Maiden Tower. Continue through Kichik Gala Street, Juma Mosque and the carpet shops, then have lunch somewhere compatible with your kosher requirements or eat a prearranged meal. In the afternoon walk to Mini-Venice, the Carpet Museum and the Caspian waterfront. Near sunset, take the funicular to Highland Park and Martyrs' Lane for the finest view of Flame Towers and the bay.
2. **Day 2: Modern Baku and shopping** — Begin on the waterfront near Crescent Bay, then visit the Heydar Aliyev Center, Zaha Hadid's flowing white landmark; arrive near opening time for uncrowded photographs. Afterwards, head to Port Baku Mall for luxury labels or to 28 Mall and Ganjlik Mall for chains such as Zara, Mango and Massimo Dutti. Return downtown for an evening walk along Nizami Street, through Passage 1901 and around illuminated Fountains Square. Preorder kosher food or use a hotel kitchenette, then have coffee or a cocktail at a rooftop around Sahil without assuming its food menu is kosher.
3. **Day 3: Gobustan and the mud volcanoes** — Leave with a driver by 08:30 for Gobustan Reserve, roughly one to one and a half hours from Baku, and begin at the museum before walking among the prehistoric rock carvings. Continue in a local 4x4 to the mud-volcano area because the final road is rough and can be problematic after rain. Bring a packed kosher lunch from Baku, water, a hat and shoes that can get dirty. On the return journey, stop at Bibi-Heybat Mosque and a viewpoint over the oil fields, reaching the boulevard toward evening.
4. **Day 4: Fire Temple, Yanar Dag and Absheron beaches** — Set out in the morning for Ateshgah Fire Temple in Surakhani, a Silk Road site associated with Zoroastrian fire worship. Continue to Yanar Dag to see natural flames emerging from the hillside, preferably before the afternoon groups. From June to September, spend the rest of the day at Bilgah Beach or Sea Breeze's beach clubs, reserving a bed on weekends; in winter, replace the beach with Mardakan Castle and the Gala Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Complex. Return before evening traffic and finish with a nighttime view of Flame Towers.
5. **Day 5: Quba and the Red Village** — Leave with a driver at 08:00 for Quba and Qırmızı Qəsəbə, the settlement associated with Mountain Jews and commonly called the Red Village by Israelis; driving takes around two to two and a half hours each way. Visit the Museum of Mountain Jews and active synagogues only after checking hours and coordinating access, dress respectfully and ask before taking photographs. Bring kosher food from Baku rather than relying on a kosher restaurant being available, then walk by the Qudyalchay bridge and through Quba's streets. Return to Baku in the evening; families with small children can replace this long day with Baku Zoo and Deniz Mall.
6. **Day 6: Market, culture and a final city stroll** — Begin at Taza Bazaar in the morning for Azerbaijani tea, dried fruit, nuts and spices, checking packaging and kosher status where necessary. Continue to the National Carpet Museum if you missed it, or visit the Museum of Miniature Books in the Old City, followed by Philharmonic Garden. Use the final hours for shopping on Nizami Street or a prebooked traditional hammam, with separate arrangements where required. Collect any prearranged kosher food before departure and leave for the airport at least three hours before the flight because of evening traffic and terminal checks.

## VAYULOR tips

- 💳 Cards are accepted almost everywhere in central Baku, but keep 50 to 100 manat in cash for stalls, tips and small businesses in Icherisheher, and use ATMs belonging to established banks such as ABB or Kapital Bank.
- 🚕 Order rides through Bolt and enter a precise destination such as Deniz Mall or Highland Park, as street taxis near the airport and Fountain Square may quote several times the normal fare.
- 🏨 For couples and travelers who want to walk out at night, I choose Sahil or Fountain Square; families are more comfortable near Baku Boulevard, while Icherisheher suits those who value atmospheric lanes over easy vehicle access.
- 🎟️ Book the Gobustan and mud volcano tour at least two days ahead and explicitly request a 4x4 for the final section, since the muddy road is unsuitable for many vehicles after rain.
- 🌅 Reach Highland Park 40 minutes before sunset by taxi from the upper entrance, then walk down the stairs toward the boulevard to avoid the steep climb and the crowds when the Flame Towers illuminate.
- 🎶 For fashionable venues such as MOJO and Eleven, reserve a table on weekends, dress smartly and carry a passport or clear copy, and ignore offers of a “casino” because casino gambling is prohibited in Azerbaijan.
- 🍽️ Kosher-observant travelers should arrange meals in advance with Chabad Baku rather than relying on vegetarian dishes at local restaurants, as even qutab, plov and pastries may use non-kosher fat or utensils.
- 🤝 At restaurants, check whether service has already been added to the bill; if not, around 10% is customary, while gentle bargaining is acceptable at markets such as Taza Bazaar but aggressive haggling is not.
- 🌬️ Even on a sunny day, carry a light windproof layer for the boulevard and Highland Park, as Baku’s Caspian wind is strongest in the evening and makes winter temperatures feel considerably colder.
- 📱 For a short trip, an eSIM activated before leaving Israel is the smoothest option; if you need substantial data, buy an Azercell or Bakcell SIM at an official downtown shop rather than the pricier arrivals-hall counter.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do Israelis need a visa for Baku?**

Yes, Israeli passport holders need an e-visa in advance through the official ASAN Visa system, usually processed within three working days, with an urgent option available. Before flying to Baku, ensure your passport remains valid for at least three months beyond the visa’s expiry date.

**Are there direct flights from Israel to Baku, and how long is the flight?**

Direct flights operate from Tel Aviv to Baku, mainly with Azerbaijan Airlines and sometimes Israeli carriers depending on the season, with a flight time of about three hours. Schedules vary, so compare baggage allowances and departure times rather than only the base fare.

**When is the best time to visit Baku, and when is peak season?**

The most pleasant periods in Baku are April to June and September to October, when walking through the Old City and along the boulevard is comfortable. July and August are popular peak months for Israelis and families, but they are very hot and can also be windy.

**How many days are enough for Baku?**

Three to four nights in Baku are enough for the Old City, Heydar Aliyev Center, Highland Park, shopping and an evening out. Add another night if you want a full day at Gobustan and the mud volcanoes or time at the Sea Breeze complex.

**What is the best way to get around Baku?**

Central Baku is easy to explore on foot between the Old City, Nizami Street and the boulevard, while Bolt or Uber Azerbaijan are convenient for longer rides with an upfront price. The metro is cheap and efficient, but a booked car is more practical for the airport, Gobustan or Sea Breeze.

**How much does a trip to Baku from Israel cost?**

A three-to-four-night trip to Baku typically costs about ₪2,000 to ₪4,000 per person sharing a room, including a direct flight, a good central hotel and basic spending, while luxury hotels and shopping increase the budget. A pleasant meal usually costs around ₪50 to ₪120 per person, and central Bolt rides generally range from a few shekels to a few dozen.

**Is Baku safe for Israeli travelers?**

Baku is generally considered orderly and safe, and many Israeli visitors feel comfortable in central areas such as the Old City, Nizami Street and the boulevard. Still, check Israel’s current National Security Council travel guidance before departure, avoid political discussions and keep a low profile if regional conditions change.

**What are the must-see attractions in Baku?**

Baku essentials include the Old City with the Maiden Tower and Palace of the Shirvanshahs, the Flame Towers view from Highland Park, and the striking Heydar Aliyev Center. Outside the city, the most popular excursion combines Gobustan Reserve with the mud volcanoes, usually as a half-day or full-day tour.

**What is nightlife like in Baku, and are there casinos?**

Baku nightlife centers on Nizami Street, Fountain Square and venues such as 360 Bar, while summer brings parties and beach clubs around Sea Breeze. There are no legal casinos in Baku, so travelers seeking a gambling holiday should choose another destination and ignore questionable advertising.

**Are there kosher food and Chabad in Baku, who is the city best for, and what should you pack?**

Baku has a Chabad center assisting with prayers, Shabbat and kosher food, and travelers should arrange meals in advance and confirm the current operation of the kosher 7/40 restaurant; the city suits couples and groups of friends, as well as families thanks to the boulevard, Little Venice and Carpet Museum. Pack comfortable shoes and a wind-resistant layer year-round, plus swimwear for Sea Breeze in summer; Baku can also be combined with Quba and the mountain village of Khinalig.
